1928: ao redor do mundo em 80 filmes / 1928: around the world in 80 films

The year 1928 was one of transition for the film world. Everybody was asking what would happen after the first experience integrating image and dialogue on screen. Would talkies be only a fad or would they come to stay? To better analyze this year of metamorphosis, let's take a look at 80 films, made in different countries and using several techniques.

América do Sul

South America

There are only two South American films worth mentioning that year: the Brazilian “Braza Dormida”, with beautiful sets and a weak plot, and the Argentinian “Alma en Pena”, based on a homonymous tango.

France

Many excellent films came from France, including works from director Jean Epstein (“The Fall of the House of Usher”), René Clair (“An Italian Straw Hat”), Buñuel (a little film called “Un Chien Andalou”) and Carl Theodor Dreyer (“The Passion of Joan of Arc”, raw and extremely human). There was also the reconstruction of a battle of World War I with “Verdun, visions d'histoire”, a fairy tale adapted as “The Little Match Girl”, another surrealist short called “The Starfish” and the long drama “L'Argent”.

Soviet Union

Good old Eisenstein gave to the world the impressive propaganda film “October”, Vsevolod Pudovkin made the nearly epic “Storm Over Asia” and Aleksandr Dovzhenko flirted with fantasy in “Zvenigora”. But Soviets also had fun, and “Salamander” is a satire of those pro-Stalin propaganda movies.

Inglaterra

England

Three of the four most important English movies from 1928 came from the hands of a little fat man called Alfred Hitchcock: “Easy Virtue”, “Champagne” and “The Farmer's Wife”, all of them silent movies. Another film worth mentioning is “The Constant Nymph”, starring Ivor Novello and recently completely restored.

Alemanha

Quatro palavras: Fritz Lang, “Espiões”, épico. Além do mestre Lang, a Alemanha viu também o estranho “Sex in Chains”, dirigido e estrelado por William Dieterle, e a animação dadaísta “Ghosts for Breakfast”.

Germany

Four words: Fritz Lang, “Spionen”, epic. Besides the master Lang, Germany also watched the strange “Sex in Chains”, directed and starred by William Dieterle, and the Dadaist animation “Ghosts for Breakfast”. It was a very crazy year for the German people.

Asia

It was a productive year for Chinese cinema: the releases of 1928 include “Kick”, the first Chinese sports movie, “Patriotic Souls”, historically important as it took a stand against the Japanese domination, and “Burning of the Red Lotus Temple”, an epic in 19 parts – three of them were released in 1928. Unfortunately, it is a lost film.

Meanwhile, in India it was released “Khoon-E-Nahak / Murder Must Foul”, the first adaptation of Hamlet made in Bollywood.

África

Destacamos “Simba: The King of Beasts”, documentário gravado por um casal americano entre 1924 e 1927 no Quênia.

Africa

We highlighht “Simba: The King of Beasts”, a documentary shot by an American couple between 1924 and 1927 in Kenya.

Perdidos

Lost

Time to cry: these films are lost! Search for them in your houses, in attics and basements, in cinematheques and archives: you can find precious slices of film history. Among the lost films we have two that were highly praised at the time, “4 Devils” and “The Patriot”, the only film that brought Clara Bow in color, “Red Hair”, and a little bit of Mary Astor, Norma Shearer, Greta Garbo and Gary Cooper. And not even Tarzan escaped.

HOLLYWOOD!

Filmes falados

Nasce o cinema 100% falado com “Lights of New York”. O primeiro western falado, “In Old Arizona”, é indicado ao Oscar. E a MGM dá voz a seus filmes com “White Shadows in the South Seas”, meio mudo, meio falado.

Talkies

The 100% talking cinema is born with “Lights of New York”. William Powell speaks in “Interference”. Al Jolson has with “The Singing Fool” the second biggest box-office hit of the year. The first talking western, “In Old Arizona”, is nominated for the Oscars. And MGM brings dialogue to its films with the part-talkie “White Shadows in the South Seas”.

Curtas-metragens

Shorts

Because fun can come in a small dosis. We had a ot of Laurel & Hardy, Ben Turpin, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and a young Carole Lombard.

Estreias

Comedy Masters

Charles Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and TWO Buster Keaton films! By the way, a Keaton film, “The Cameraman”, was the winner in our poll: the readers of this blog have a good taste and they think this lovely comedy was the best film of 1928!

An many more films were made in Hollywood. All films listed below are silent, with two exceptions: “Lonesome”, a fantastic and sweet movie by Pál Fejös, and “Noah's Ark”. Both have small sequences with dialogue.
