What is your favorite holiday? Your birthday should be a holiday? Or maybe you prefer Christmas or Easter? Well, my favorite day of the year (and one I celebrate like a holiday) is National Classic Movie Day, the wonderful May 16th.

I love many films, from many genres. For a cinephile, to choose a favorite film is a difficult task. And how about choosing five films to take to a desert island with you? The challenge was given, and this is my list of five classic movies I'd watch over and over again in my island, until I could be rescued to see more classics.

1- Ben-Hur (1925): Anyone would freak out in a desert island without spiritual support. That's why my favorite religious film would be an essential item. Besides the wonderfully inspiring story, this silent movie has breathtaking sequences in two-strip Technicolor!

2- All Quiet on the Western Front (1930): Having a desert island only for you may seem wonderful, but sooner or later you'll miss having people around you. When this happens, my solution will be this heartbreaking film. After watching it, I'll be glad again to be far away from the human bestialities.

3- Horse Feathers (1932): The Marx brothers are comedy geniuses, and I really, really love them. Every time “Horse Feathers”, a relatively short but very funny movie, is on TV, I need to stop whatever I'm doing and watch it. And every time I discover a new pun or funny quote that had escaped me earlier. There is no better companion in a desert island than Harpo, Chico, Groucho, Zeppo and Thelma Todd!

4- A Star is Born (1937): There are some films that we cannot explain. They simply move us, talk to us, touch our hearts in a way that other thousands of films haven't done. “A Star is Born” has comedy, drama, romance, the film industry, Technicolor and tears. It's simply an important film to me – and an important film to make me survive in the desert island.

5- Singin’ in the Rain (1952): I have the impression that this film will also be included in other “5 Movies on an Island” lists. Simply because it is the best feel-good movie of all times. If I’m sad, a scene or a song from the movie can make me happy again. To escape from bad mood in the island, “Singin’ in the Rain” is mandatory, even though I probably already know the film by heart.

This is my contribution to the “5 Movies on an Island” blogathon, hosted by Rick at Classic film and TV Cafe.

Well done, Le! I wouldn't be surprised to see A STAR IS BORN on other lists as well as SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (in fact, I've already read a list that included the STAR IS BORN remake). I was pleased to HORSE FEATHERS (which I rate with DUCK SOUP) as the funniest films by one cinema's funniest family.

Wonderful! I'd happily sit down and watch ALL of these with you!

I feel the same way about "Horse Feathers". I always stop whatever I'm doing when it comes on television.

You put a lot of thought into this list and came up with some very fine films.

I love your rationale for your favorites, and your inclusion of both the sublime and the absurd.

I was THIS CLOSE to including "Singin' in the Rain" in my list, as that was the film that made me fall in love with Old Hollywood, but then I decided on "Anchors Aweigh" instead. Great list!

I always have trouble posting comments on your blog, Le so hope this works! Excluding BEN-HUR all of your choices could have easily been included in mine. This is such fun!

What delightful choices! Oh - and by the way - when you are showing Horse Feathers, can you phone my desert island and invite me over?

The Marx Brothers, Singing in the Rain, and A Star is Born? What was I thinking--I'm ready to change my list of 5 classic movies! I LOVE your choices. Thanks for participating :)

Great choices! I don't know what I would choose for my five movies (I'd really have to think on it), but Singing in the Rain and a Marx Brothers movie (probably Duck Soup for me) would have a good chance of being among the five!

Ah, adorei a ideia desse post!

Such a good idea to include a spiritual movie! I also liked your rationale for including All Quiet on the Western Front--excellent point about humanity. And Singin' in the Rain-love!!!
