A História do Mundo – Parte 1 / History of the World – Part I (1981)

Parodies are as old as art itself. Right after serious art is created, the parody comes. This wasn’t different in film history. And, if I was asked who is responsible for the best film parodies ever, I’d answer in a second: Mel Brooks. Mel is the man who mocked Dracula, Frankenstein, Hitchcock and whole genres such as thriller and western. So we should expect that Mel mocked also the epic genre, in a film that, besides everything, gave us this wonderful GIF:

Starting with “the dawn of men” (with the classic song “Also sprach Zarathustra”), and going through four other sketches of different durations, Mel Brooks shows us the human “evolution” and also the origin of stuff such as art (and consequently, the origin of the art critic), music and comedy.

In the Roman sketch, Mel plays Comicus, a “stand-up philosopher” Who has the chance to perform at Caesar’s Palace. In the streets of Rome he meets the slave Josephus (Gregory Hines) and the vestal virgin Miriam (Mary-Margaret Humes).

However, the most priceless bit is the Inquisition musical that has even tap dancers and swimming nuns inspired by Esther Williams. It’s not better than the Monty Python “Spanish Inquisition” sketch, but this is the best part of the film.

What really bothered me in this film was sexism. It often treats women like objects (although the empress played by Madeline Kahn also treats men like objects) and it focuses on sex to make people laugh, in the same poor way many comedies do still today. I can’t say it was a bad phase for Mel Brooks, because in the 1980s he also made less explicit films such as “To be or not to be?” (1983, as actor and producer) and “Spaceballs” (1987, as actor, producer and director).

Mel invited an illustrious voice to be the narrator: Orson Welles. It is true that Welles’ iconic voice is only heard briefly at the beginning of every sketch, but Welles was paid 25 thousand dollars for his work – that was all recorded in a morning.

“History of the World – Part 1” is not Mel Brooks’ best film. Mel was at his best in the 1970s. But pay attention to the details: in them you find the best jokes (like in the “Trojan Horse” poster). But Mel triumphed, playing five roles and working as writer, director, producer, composer and also songwriter for the two musical numbers. And he even made us want to see “Hitler on Ice” in Part 2.

This is my contribution to the Mel Brooks Blogathon, hosted by Louis at The Cinematic Frontier and honoring the legend who turns 90 today.

I wear glasses. In fact, my whole family wear glasses. Many people that I admire wear glasses. And it is not surprising that I think glasses are sexy. Maybe you have never thought glasses could be sexy, but they really attract me – especially if they are on the face of someone who is charming, nice and has a heart of gold. And you probably never thought Harold Lloyd could be sexy – but I consider him the cutest nerd of silent cinema.
Silent Harold Lloyd is the perfect example of the loser. He is very goofy, is always bullied and laughed at, but has a lot of good intentions and keeps a huge smile in his face.
Harold entered the movie business in 1913, and in 1915 he started to play a character called Lonesome Luke. To attract the public, then and also now, some actors had to develop an identifiable persona. Lonesome Luke was easily indentified by his moustache, but he was very similar to Chaplin's tramp.
And it was only when Harold, with Hal Roach's help, developed an original character that he found his place in the sun in Hollywood. In 1917 the character “Glasses” appeared – he was a regular boy, and in many films was named Harold. In an interview in 1962, Lloyd recalled about his glasses: “"it more or less put me in a different category because I became a human being. He was a kid that you would meet next door, across the street, but at the same time I could still do all the crazy things that we did before, but you believed them. They were natural and the romance could be believable."
In many of his films, both shorts and features, Harold Lloyd conquered me – and also the audience. There are adorable films in which Harold tries to get a girl (like “Ask Father”, 1919, “Grandma's Boy”, 1922 and the masterpieces “Safety Last!”, 1923, and “The Freshman”, 1925). And there are also the films showing daily situations, like “Just Neighbors” (1919), the first short film I've ever seen from Harold.
Igualzinho a Harold Lloyd.
It's difficult to point out precisely what made Harold Lloyd's persona so easy to love. It probably was because the public had an identification with him, and therefore rooted for him. Maybe it was the glasses, after all. The truth is that Harold is charismatic and lovely. And that's why Harold Lloyd and his cute loser with glasses were the inspiration for Clark Kent, the most famous well-behaved journalist from comic books – who was secretely a hero. Just like Harold Lloyd.

Sometimes we need a punch in the stomach. A metaphoric punch, obviously: something to take us out of our comfort zone, to bother us, to leave us dissatisfied with ourselves. This is possible with many films. This happened to me while I was watching Fritz Lang's first Hollywood film, “Fury” (1936), that tries to answer two main questions: Why bad things happen to good people? And how can these things destroy the goodness in those people?

Joe Wilson (Spencer Tracy) was a nice guy. He wanted to marry his sweetheart, Katherine Grant (Sylvia Sidney), but to do it he needed to save money. He does well with his brothers in a gas station in Chicago, while Katharine goes to work in another town. When Joe finally gets enough money, he decides to go meet his sweetheart, carrying along his loyal dog Rainbow (Terry, best known for playing Toto in “The Wizard of Oz” in 1939). And then troubles start.

Joe is stopped on the way and taken to be asked about the kidnapping of a girl. Unfortunate coincidences make the sheriff believe that Joe knows something about the crime, and he is arrested until the facts are checked. But there is no time to find out the truth: quickly the news about a man involved in the kidnapping being arrested spread through town, and nobody wants to know Joe's version before making a judgement about him. In a powerful and wise metaphor involving people who spread gossips and sassy chickens, it becomes clear that the truth is the less important thing when there is too much animosity.

And that's why they burn down the jail – and rejoice with the idea of Joe being burned alive. When the real kidnappers are arrested and confess the crime, all the people who supported the lynching prefer to forget the misfortune. But Joe, who survived, won't forget: he wants revenge, and nothing else. And there is a whole town to be condemned – not only the 22 people indicted for murder, but their families, the people who spread the rumors and the ones who became happy with the death of an innocent man.

The truth is that we are all judged every day – and in general by people who have no moral to judge us. And it is when this happens that we lose hope for mankind, can't trust people and even think about revenge. This already happened to me.

This is one among many movies about the dangers of the mobs looking for justice and not interested in dialog. Other movies about the theme are “The Ox-Bow Incident” (1943) and “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962). There is also a less common theme, the 'corruption by friendship'. Everybody in the city want to stand for the guilty ones – because, deep down inside, they are all guilty, including the sheriff.

Spencer Tracy is great in very distinct moments: from the young man in love to the survivor full of rage, he shines and is convincing, although he is better as the darkest version. Walter Abel is also spectacular as the district attorney, who uses the technique of “you can erase an answer from the report, but not from the jury's minds”.

Fritz Lang had just left Nazi Germany and we can see an influence from his last German film, “M” (1931), in “Fury”. However, Lang was dealing with a current problem happening in his new country, lynching, and was able to make a pertinent film not only for 1936, but also nowadays. In “Fury”, we learn that sometimes reason cannot defeat bestiality. But it is always good to try to keep reason – after all, it is reason that makes us human.

Ídolo, Amante e Herói (1942) / The Pride of the Yankees (1942)

Who doesn't love a hero that comes from the lower classes and triumphs, overcoming all difficulties? Lou Gehrig was the son of German immigrants, and just in beginning of the movie his talent as a baseball player is shown with a neighborhood kids' game, a broken window shop and a lecture from Lou's mother, who wanted him to study Engineering at Columbia University.

Lou enters Columbia but, being from a humble household and working as his mother's helper at the college canteen, Lou is not well accepted by his mates. They even tease him in the same way they'd do with Longfellow Deeds – but Lou Gehrig has a bad temper and attacks when teased. However, this is not a problem: as in any inspirational story, Lou will have the last laugh.

Lou Gehrig passed away at age 37. Gary Cooper was older than 40 when the film was shot. “The Pride of the Yankees” is above all a work full of poetic license, made to move an audience that idolized Lou, and was still grieving because of his very recent death. And, to achieve this level of connection, Lou is shown as an average man, shy when he gets close to his idol Babe Ruth or acting foolishly when he falls in love with Eleanor (Teresa Wright).

The most part of the film shows Lou Gehrig’s accomplishments, many times in an idealized way. His marriage do Eleanor is too perfect, and Lou’s mother, for a few minutes, becomes the castrating mother that can’t see her dear son with another woman. Everything is too perfect until the film starts to become interesting – and tragic.

Lou realizes there is something wrong with his muscles. The scene in which he falls from a chair while trying to tie his shoes, in the middle of the New York Yankees’ locker room, is as moving as Eddie Redmayne’s fall as Stephen Hawking in the middle of the university campus in “The Theory of Everything” (2014). It is, after all, the same disease that both have: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

The passage of time is shown through an assemblage of newspaper snippets collected by Eleanor. From the moment Lou starts suffering with his disease until the end, the film becomes outstanding. Gary Cooper didn’t even want to play Lou at the beginning, because he knew nothing about baseball (read HERE about the trick used to show Gary as a convincing ball player), but he was able to add all the drama Lou’s final speech required. You don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy those final minutes – you just need to be human to be left with a lump in your throat.

A Espada era a Lei / The Sword in the Stone (1963)

It’s great to see animated features when you are a kid, but it is a completely different (and revealing) experience to revisit them when you are an adult. Even though I have a poor memory, I remember watching “The Sword in the Stone” at school and that probably wasn’t my first time seeing the film.

The film tells the story of young Arthur, Who takes the sword off the stone and fulfills a prophecy, becoming this way the king of England. Well, this story could be told in less than 15 minutes. That’s why the outstanding character (and, let’s face, the real lead of the film) is Merlin the Magician.

“The Sword in the Stone” can be seen as a good example of the hero's journey (or monomyth). This is a narrative structure that comes from Ancient Greece and can be explained by this cycle:

Well, our hero is Arthur (or Wart). Merlin is his mentor (and one of THE greatest mentors in film). Arthur is the kind of underdog with whom we can easily feel a connection. He is an orphan who has to live with his foster father, a knight who doesn't believe in magic, and his brother Kay, the favorite son, who is training to take part in a big tournament.

Merlin enters abruptly in Arthur's life with the promise to teach him valuable lessons with the help of Archimedes the owl, who is here for comic relief and a bit of reason. Pay attention to how most of the scenes composed with Merlin in the center have the color blue as the main color. Merlin's clothes are blue, and the walls and dishes in his house are a darker blue.

Arthur's tests are created by Merlin, who transforms himself and his pupil into several animals. And it is great that the film focuses on Arthur’s training, showing that the journey is more important than the final goal.

The climax of the film is not the moment Arthur takes the sword off the stone – not at all! The climax is the magic duel between Merlin and Mad Madam Min. This sequence was considered the most elaborated ever done in an animated film to that date. But this was also the last animated success Walt Disney saw – the following animated feature made by the studios, “The Jungle Book”, was released after the founder's death.

Disney made many other movies using the hero’s journey narrative. In many of them, like in Arthur’s case, the hero only triumphs without the help of the mentor. But it doesn’t mean that the mentor is not important – on the opposite: without him, the story wouldn’t even exist. And that’s why that Merlin remains as one of the most iconic and adored characters from the Disney universe.
