Toureiros (1945) / The Bullfighters (1945)

Do começo da parceria, vale ser destacado “The Battle of the Century” (1927), sobre o qual escrevi no meu blog Lost and Found Films (eminglês).

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy made 107 movies as a duo, between 1927 and 1951. From the beginning of their partnership, it’s worth highlighting “The Battle of the Century” (1927), about which I wrote for my blog Lost and Found Films. From the final phase of the duo, I chose to highlight “The Bullfighters”, a movie that many years ago I decided not to watch dubbed on TV in the wee hours of the night and I’m happy I made this decision - or else I wouldn’t be here writing about this funny flick.

Stan and Ollie are on a plane to Mexico City. Ollie is interested in the Mexican señoritas, Stan in the Mexican tamales. But they are on a mission: they are private detectives investigating Miss Blake (Carol Andrews in her film debut). But it happens that Stan is the doppelgänger of famous bullfighter Don Sebastian from Barcelona, Spain. Another complication: in the town we can find Richard K. Muldoon (Ralph Sanford), a man Stan and Ollie wrongly sent to jail five years prior - and he’s crazy for revenge! Due to problems with Don Sebastian’s passport, Stan will have to impersonate the bullfighter without being recognized by Mr Muldoon.

By the 1940s, Stan and Ollie had been nearly everywhere - including in a convention meeting in one of the best movies of the duo, “Sons of the Desert” (1933). A decade later, a new duo gained popularity on screen: Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, also paired for their different approaches to comedy and physical characteristics. Abbott and Costello had made films for Universal Studios and MGM, while in their already long career Stan and Ollie worked for Hal Roach, MGM and were now on 20th Century Fox.

When I talk about “approaches to comedy” I’m thinking about the dynamic duos in which one is the straight man and the other is the troublemaker, the main source of comedy. Also in the 1940s there were in this category Bing Crosby and Bob Hope and in the 1950s another duo built this way dominated the screens: Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. In Laurel and Hardy, both were seasoned funny men, but Hardy was the closest to “serious” that the duo got, even though there were many gags built around him.

As you can expect, there are gags galore in “The Bullfighters”. There are gags involving water fountains, the breaking of eggs completed with chicken sound effects and many others that worked well in both silents and talkies. In fact, there are in the picture many visual gags and close to zero funny one-liners in this movie - proof that Laurel and Hardy never abandoned their origins.

The director of “The Bullfighters” was Mal St. Clair, with a few sequences directed by an uncredited Stan Laurel. Mal is short for Malcolm. So, Malcolm St. Clair was a cartoonist turned piano player and bit player in 1915. After serving in World War I, he became a director. Having directed two Buster Keaton films, he was inspired by the Great Stone Face in his own gag-writing process. He suffered a bit with the arrival of sound in movies but remained active, working for several studios until he got to 20th Century Fox in 1936, where he remained for 12 years. Malcolm St. Clair died at age 55 in 1952.

The actress portraying Muldoon’s girlfriend and cabaret artist Conchita is Diosa Costello - being “diosa” Spanish for “goddess”. She gets to show her talents singing and dancing the rumba. Born in 1913 in Puerto Rico, she had already appeared in the RKO musical “They Met in Argentina” in 1941. She was visiting someone on the 20th Century Fox lot when she was spotted and cast in “The Bullfighters”. Her most famous role would come in 1950, when she played Bloody Mary in “South Pacific” on the stage. She lived to be 90.

“The Bullfighters” was the last Laurel and Hardy movie made in Hollywood. The B-movie unit on Fox was closing, so the duo had more artistic freedom to do this movie. They refused to stay at Fox afterwards and made their final film together in 1951: the French-Italian co-production “Atoll K”.

“The Bullfighters” almost ends in pure chaos, but there is a final iconic visual gag. Less than one hour long, it’s packed with good laughs and is a great example of what Ollie often tells Stan: “Another nice mess you’ve got me into”!

A recent discussion caused frisson on Film Twitter because an user said that old movies didn’t put an effort when the issue was color. This person could have his/her mind changed if he/she watched any Technicolor marvel made in 1940s England – the most notorious examples being Powell and Pressburger’s movies such as “Black Narcissus” (1946) and “The Red Shoes” (1948). From 1945 comes another Technicolor marvel: Noël Coward’s “Blithe Spirit”.

Charles Condomine (Rex Harrison) is a writer ready to start his new book – but first he needs to do some research. He and his wife Ruth (Constance Cummings) invite over for dinner a couple of friends and also a psychic named Madame Arcati (Margaret Rutherford). The goal was to see how Madame’s trance was nothing but charlatanism, but something happens: Charles’ first wife, Elvira (Kay Hammond), who died seven years before, is summoned. But only Charles can see and hear her!

Elvira’s materialization, of course, brings all sorts of troubles. When talking to her, Charles is perceived as saying offenses to Ruth. When Elvira starts interacting with the things in the house, Ruth freaks out, as one does in the presence of a ghost. And what a ghost: with pale skin and bright red lispstick and nail polish, Elvira should figure in all the lists of most memorable ghosts of cinema.

It’s interesting to notice that much of Ruth and Charles’ dialogue happens around the table where they are sharing meals. This highlights the theatrical origins of “Blithe Spirit” while also adding the maid Edith (Jacqueline Clarke) to the action.

Elvira’s look was created by a mix of fluorescent green clothes and make-up and lighting tricks – and the special effects won an Oscar. Kay Hammond literally shines as Elvira, a role that was intended for Myrna Loy – and one she said she was “born to play” – but the actress wasn’t loaned by MGM. The daughter of actors Guy Standing and Dorothy Hammond, Kay found success in the theater, where she originated the role of Elvira in 1941, and made 28 movies between 1930 and 1961.

We can’t talk about the history of color in film without mentioning Technicolor supervisor Natalie Kalmus. According to IMDb, she is credited in almost 400 movies made between 1928 and 1950, with dozens of credits every year. The wife of Herbert T. Kalmus, the inventor of the Technicolor process, Natalie contributed to the invention and was put in film sets to oversee the use of Technicolor cameras, that were both sensitive and expensive, and to decide the colors in sets and clothes. Issues with color made the production of “Blithe Spirit” drag, and in the end Margaret Rutherford was complaining that they were shooting for six months instead of the twelve weeks planned.

Noël Coward’s play was written in 1941 and the author – also producer of the movie – didn’t sell the rights to Hollywood because he disliked the adaptations of his work made by North Americans until then. Nevertheless, with the changes made by screenwriter and director David Lean – including changing the end, adding one that would be impossible on stage –, Coward declared that they ruined the best play he’d ever written.

We, as humans, often think and imagine what happens after we die. Is there a Heaven or an afterlife? Cinema tried to answer the question in many ways and occasions. Elvira comes back from beyond but tells little about what happens there. Wa have more elaborate views of the next life in films such as “A Matter of Life and Death” (1946), by the aforementioned duo Powell and Pressburger. The issue is so present and pertinent that not only movies about it are a success but also psychics such as Madame Arcati have their clientele to talk to the beyond.

“Blith Spirit” was a box-office failure, due to a mistaken casting, according to screenwriter Anthony Havellock-Allan. He said the need was for a middle-aged man – not Rex Harrison – and an attractive first wife – Constance Cummings was more attractive than Kay Hammond, Anthony noticed. Nevertheless, the film stood the test of time and now is righteously considered a classic, and a very enjoyable one!

O Ponteiro da Saudade (1945) / The Clock (1945)

She was twenty-three and in love when the opportunity arrived to show that she was more than a pretty face with a marvelous voice. We are talking about Judy Garland and her 1945 romantic movie “The Clock”.

Joe Allen (Robert Walker) is a soldier during his two-day leave in New York. He hasn’t left the Pennsylvania Station when Alice (Judy Garland) stumbles upon him and breaks the heel in her shoe. You know, it’s just the cutest of all meet-cutes. He helps her repair the shoe, and the two hang out that Sunday afternoon, going to the Central Park Zoo and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They agree to meet again that night.

Alice’s flatmate Helen (Ruth Brady) is less than thrilled when she hears that Alice met a soldier and is going out with him. Helen almost convinces Alice to never see Joe again, but the girl’s heart speaks louder and they go on an adventure together.

O musical original “On the Town” estreou na Broadway em 1944.

If the premise of this movie sounds familiar, it’s because you’re a classic film fan. It indeed shares similarities with the 1949 musical movie “On the Town”, that has three sailors on a two-day leave enjoying life and love in New York. The original musical “On the Town” opened on Broadway in 1944.

“The Clock” is based on a story by Paul and Pauline Gallico. The duo with an auspicious name sold their unpublished story to producer Arthur Freed, who knew Judy Garland was looking for a more dramatic role to play, and showed her the story. She shot some scenes with director Fred Zinnemann but wasn’t happy with the results. She then asked for Vincente Minnelli to direct the movie, and throughout filming their romance blossomed. They got married after the film wrapped.

Stealing the scene exactly halfway through the movie as an inconvenient drunk – in a scene recorded in an impressive countinuous shot – we have Keenan Wynn. A prolific character actor, Wynn was born in New York City in 1916, the son of a vaudeville actor, Ed Wynn. As a contract player on MGM in the 1940s and 1950s and later as a TV guest star, he appeared in almost 300 productions.

Both leads of “The Clock” had tragically short lives. Robert Walker had learned, just before the shooting of this film started, that his wife Jennifer Jones was leaving him to marry producer David O. Selznick. Walker drank to forget his sorrows and it wasn’t rare for Judy Garland to find him drunk at night in a bar near the studio. He would die in 1951, aged 32. During filming “The Clock”, Garland got more and more addicted to the prescription drugs she was given by the studio to keep her figure. She would die in 1969, aged 47.

Some plot points wouldn’t make sense today, now that almost everybody has a smartphone. The device would help Alice tell Joe that she would be late for their encounter under the clock on the Astor Hotel, and the whole problem of the two separated in the subway could be solved with an exchange of text messages.

The title in Brazil for this film is “O Ponteiro da Saudade”. “Saudade” is a word that exists only in Portuguese and means something like longing and missing something or someone. When Joe and Alice part, an inevitable separation that the whole movie had been announcing, is this that remains: saudade. For us, who enjoyed an hour and a half of a lovely romance, what remains is the wish that they will be reunited. We can only hope.

Trágico Álibi (1945) / My Name is Julia Ross (1945)

Some movies just grab us as we are off guard and leave us breathless – no matter how old or short they are. “My Name is Julia Ross” (1945) did this to me. As I put myself in the lead's place, I felt terrified, trapped, nervous and hopeless. And I believe all women who watch this film feel the same.

Julia Ross (Nina Foch) is new to London. She arrived in the city to have her appendix removed and now, with no family or acquaintances, she is looking for a job. An employment agency sends her to be a secretary to Mrs Hughes (Dame May Whitty) and her son Ralph (George Macready). We see that some big and evil plan is in the works, as Ralph and his mother talk to the employees of the employment agency, commenting about Julia’s remarkable resemblance with someone else.

As Julia arrives at her job, where she will also live from then on, the four accomplices steal her belongings and destroy them. Julia is now sleeping thanks to some narcotic. While she is sleeping, the family movies from a square in London to a hose in Cornwall, by the sea. When Julia wakes up, she is not Julia anymore: for everybody around her, she is Marion Hughes, Ralph’s wife, and thanks to a mental breakdown she is saying nonsense - like the silly idea that her name is Julia Ross.

We first see Julia’s back as she crosses the street in the rain and enters a building. Her face is only seen after she reads a wedding invitation that took too long to be delivered: the wedding happened the day before she got the invitation. Soon, she meets again with the groom: her friend Dennis (Roland Varno), whose wedding didn’t really happen – and because of Julia! Dennis is the only person she knows in London, and apparently the only one who could save her.

The situation is terrifying: losing your identity, what makes you unique, and have everybody doubt your sanity when it’s clear you know what you are talking about. I can bet that, as a woman, the fear I felt while watching this film was bigger than whatever a man could have felt. Women are the main victims of gaslighting – a technique named after a film from 1944 – and a man would hardly go through such a thing. Can you imagine a man’s word being discarded because he is considered hysterical? Neither can I.

And not everything Ralph could have done to Julia was shown. The Production Code was in full swing in the 1940s, and no sex scenes could be added to movies. This means that Julia’s most disgusting moments happen when Ralph kisses her, but he could have raped her – and in the real world he would have raped her to show his dominance. And, since they were “husband and wife”, nobody would care, and they would consider Julia’s rape accusation as another delirium. I mean, we’re only now recognizing the existence of marital rape and punishing it, so in the 1940s it would certainly pass unpunished.

You’ve never imagined that sweet May Whitty could be so frightening, but she is in “My Name is Julia Ross”. George Macready, on the other hand, was experienced in playing villains, crooks and other unlikeable characters. In 1946's “Gilda”, for instance, Macready plays casino owner Ballin Mundson, Glenn Ford's sinister employer – oh, and also Gilda's (Rita Hayworth) husband.

Nina Foch, often remembered because of her role as Gene Kelly's “sponsor” in “An American in Paris” (1951), is absolutely great as Julia Ross. She makes the character likeable from the start, relatable at times, and we root for her. Furthermore, she is no damsel in distress, and the whole time she is using her brains to try to outsmart the Hughes.

As in many noir films, in “My Name is Julia Ross” there are lots of shadows and contrasts. One particular moment with the shadow of a hand reminds us of the silent classic “The Cat and the Canary” (1927). There are also many scenes photographed as if they were framed by windows or doors, and in one scene in particular Julia is seen behind the bars that were installed in her bedroom window – a not-so subtle way of saying that she was captive. These shots were the work of cinematographer Burnett Guffey – who would later work in “From Here to Eternity” (1953) – and director Joseph H. Lewis – whose most famous film is “Gun Crazy” (1950).

“My Name is Julia Ross” is only 65 minutes long, but these were some of the tensest minutes I’ve had in my life. Having started as a B-movie with a bigger budget at Columbia, the film was shot in only 18 days – but the initial plan was to shoot in only 12 – and the result couldn't have been better.
