Dixiana (1930)

There are movies that are Classics and there are movies that are just Old. How many classics can be made in a year, all over the world? 25, perhaps? The other hundreds of other films don’t stand the test of time and remain as curiosities of the past. Today’s film is nothing but this: a curiosity. I heard about it years ago as being not a very good musical from the first experiences with synchronized sound. I kept it in my radar. And now it’s time to review “Dixiana”.

Lá, num show, ele vê Dixiana “Bebe Daniels).

The credits appearing while a strong male voice sings about the Mississippi river and a big boat passes by echoes “Show Boat”, as a version of the musical was made in 1929. Carl Van Horn (Everett Marshall) is an heir who leaves the plantation to go to New Orleans. There, at a show, he sees Dixiana (Bebe Daniels). They are old acquaintances, because when he asks her to marry him, she quickly says yes. Carl takes Dixiana to his property, where everybody is charmed by her. But when his stepmother discovers Dixiana is a showgirl - and even worse, a circus girl! - she gets mad. Dixiana decides to break the engagement and go back to show business and maybe become the queen of Mardi Gras.

Cornelius Van Horn (Joseph Cawthorn) and his wife Helen (Jobyna Howland), Carl’s stepmother, serve as comic relief as they bicker and interact with Dixiana’s fellow artists. Everything is literally fun and games until Helen does a villainous act. Then, the two fellow artists, Ginger (Robert Woolsey) and Peewee (Bert Wheeler), become the comic relief with both wordplays and musical numbers, plus a love triangle. Because of their co-protagonism - after all, they are the famous comic duo Wheeler & Woolsey -, we can say “Dixiana” is a musical comedy.

We’re simply chilling and enjoying the film when it happens: a color sequence! The Mardi Gras sequence was shot in two-strip Technicolor and maybe it’s the main reason someone in 2026 would watch this movie. The effect is amazing and, as a huge fan of two-strip Technicolor, I can say that I was more than pleasantly surprised.

“Dixiana” is not only a talkie, it’s a musical. Nevertheless, some title cards appear to establish time and place of the actions that follow. Although I compared this film to “Show Boat” earlier, it’s closer to Jeanette MacDonald’s operatic musicals from the same period.

We can see Old Hollywood’s poor portrayal of black characters in this movie. The message boy Cupid just repeats what he heard from Carl, with an accent. Butler Jasper at the Van Horn estate is made a fool of by Wheeler and Woolsey. The two servants at the gambling house are made “seconds” in the duel between Ginger and Peewee, and both black men run away in fear. Finally, already in the Technicolor sequence, a black man (no other than Bill Bojangles in his film debut! ) who was cleaning the throne of the Mardi Gras queen does a tap dance routine, but is given no lines.

Bebe Daniels was already a veteran of the screen when “Dixiana” was made. She did her first tour as an actress at age four and had her first leading role at seven. She debuted in films at nine, and was Dorothy Gale in the early adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz” in 1910. At fourteen she was paired with Harold Lloyd as Lonesome Luke and accompanied him when his screen persona changed to the Glasses character. She worked under DeMille and made a great transition to talkies, appearing in several musicals. In 1935 she moved to London with her husband Ben Lyon and their two kids, where she worked mostly in radio.

O diretor é o famoso Luther Reed. Famoso QUEM?

The director is the famous Luther Reed. Famous WHO? The director of another early musical, “Rio Rita” from 1929, worked mainly as a screenwriter and directed 11 movies, according to IMDb. He was one of the many directors hired to make “Hell’s Angels” and was the one who, in a rage, suggested that producer Howard Hughes should direct it instead of making so many interventions. Hughes followed the angry advice.

“Dixiana” was made at RKO, never truly among the biggest studios. The studio was formed through Radio Corporation of America’s experiences with sound devices for cinema, following the advent of talkies. Known for musicals starring Astaire and Rogers, plus as being the first home of Katharine Hepburn and, later, Robert Mitchum, there are certainly many RKO films worth seeing as historical artifacts.

If I had watched “Dixiana” when I first got to know the movie, maybe I wouldn’t have enjoyed it properly, as now I know more about Bebe Daniels, the history of RKO and early musicals. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the movie. It’s great to watch the Classics, but it is also fun to watch the movies that are just Old.

Every classic film can be considered a window to the past, to another time and place - a historical artifact. But there are some that personify the “historical artifact” more than others. Musicals, for instance: is there a better or more pleasant way to discover the songs that our forefathers listened to and liked than by watching a successful musical? In my opinion, there isn’t. Released 90 years ago, the Brazilian musical “Alô Alô Carnaval” is a portrait of more than one art in a past long gone, but not forgotten.

Two men, Mr Prata and Mr Tomé, want to put on a show. Their first attempt is denied because the patron said he had a foreign company coming to use his theater. The two men then go to a casino. There, they drink, they flirt, they gamble. The patron comes back another day and says the foreign company isn’t coming after all and they can put on the show at the Blue Fly Casino. And that’s the plot.

Over half of the movie is used to showcase the spectacle. There is a pianist and a lyrical singer, but most of the songs are sambas. There is one particular samba that starts with verses from Os Lusíadas, the most famous epic poem in the Portuguese language. This shows that samba is much more than a rhythm, it’s pure culture. This can also be seen during Carnaval with the parades of samba schools: it’s not just a show - and it always is a feast for the eyes -, it’s a whole lesson in culture.

Prata and Tomé gamble at the Blue Fly casino, a common diversion of the time, but it would soon be ruled out. Ten years after this movie was released, gambling was banned in Brazil per request of the very religious First Lady, wife of the new president Eurico Gaspar Dutra. She also asked for Communism to be banned in the country and for the construction of a chapel inside the presidential residence. All requests were accepted by her darling husband.

Of course, the highlight is Carmen Miranda. She first sings, in the middle of the film, a tune with her sister Aurora and later comes back for a solo number. “Alô Alô Carnaval” is important because it’s the only known extant and preserved film made by Carmen Miranda in Brazil - film preservation is a delicate topic here, as so many movies were lost: all fictional ones made before 1913 and many more from most recent years.

Eu gostaria de destacar outra dupla: as Irmãs Pagãs - aqui creditadas literalmente Pagan I e Pagan II.

I’d like to highlight another duo: the Pagan sisters - here credited literally as Pagan I and Pagan II. Elvira Pagã and Rosina Pagã, together, recorded 13 albums in the 1930s, splitting when Elvira got married in 1940. Elvira, however, continued her solo career and became a famous “vedete” - actress from musical theatre.

With a brief role as comic relief, we have comedian Oscarito. Born in Spain in 1906 as Oscar Lorenzo Jacinto de la Inmaculada Concepción Teresa Díaz , he toured with the circus working as a clown, an acrobat and a violin player. He made his first film in 1935, but only in the 1950s he would reach his peak as a comedian, when he was paired with another popular actor, Grande Otelo.

This film was made by the studios Cinédia from Rio de Janeiro.  The studio was planned as a modern facility built to make Brazil become a big player in the cinema world. Director Humberto Mauro made the inaugural film there and many more came, such as Mário Peixoto’s “Limite” and Gilda de Abreu’s “O Ébrio” (“The Drunkard”, 1946). It was also used by Orson Welles in shootings for “It’s All True”. The studio still stands as a location and memorial center.

We could say that Prata and Tomé were a “queer coded” couple, as it is clearer in the sequence where they leave their house both in pajamas. They joke, before that scene, that the duo singing at the casino were a “couple”. There wasn’t anything like the Hays Code in Brazilian cinema, but we must remember that Brazil is the biggest catholic country in the world and conservatism is deep in our roots, unfortunately. LGBTQ people were and are often treated as a joke.

“Alô Alô Carnaval” circulates on YouTube as a 60-minute version that sometimes is hard to see and hard to hear. We usually think about silent films as most lost films, but in countries where memory is taken for granted more recent movies can be lost as well. Brazil has an issue with its memory not only in the movie world. As a historian, I’m fighting for change and this blogathon is a good starting point.

This is my contribution to the 6th Luso World Cinema blogathon, hosted by me here at Crítica Retrô and by my friend Beth at Spellbound with Beth Ann.

Porgy & Bess (1959)

Before watching “Porgy and Bess” (1959), I couldn’t imagine Sidney Poitier in a musical. On the other hand, I was more than familiar with the musical talents of Sammy Davis Jr - who was in one of my favorite underrated musicals, “Robin and the 7 Hoods” (1964) - and Dorothy Dandridge, who became the first black woman to be nominated for the Best Actress Oscar with “Carmen Jones” (1954), directed by the same man behind “Porgy and Bess”, Otto Preminger. And it was like this, with novelties in the horizon and some familiar faces, that I went to watch the movie.

Bess (Dorothy Dandridge) drinks whisky like a man and places bets in crap games also dominated by men. Among the men playing we can find Porgy (Sidney Poitier), a handicapped guy, and Bess’s beau Crowne (Brock Peters). After the game, Porgy goes to his house and Crowne has a heated argument with another man, and ends up killing him. Crowne escapes and Bess finds a refuge at Porgy’s house.

Time passes and Bess becomes Porgy’s girl - or Porgy is now Bess’s man, the order doesn’t matter. One day, there is a picnic that Bess attends while Porgy stays at home. There Crowne reappears, wanting Bess back. He assaults her - in a shockingly brutal assault scene considering the time the film was made - and when her fever caused by the trauma ceases, a hurricane arrives to bring more trouble to Porgy and Bess, who is being pursued not only by Crowne, but also by the drug dealer Sportin’ Life (Sammy Davis Jr).

It was very rare to see a character with disabilities in classic movies. I can think of a few men in wheelchairs, like in “Lucky Star” (1929), in the Dr Kildare series and the villain from “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946). The other character walking on his knees can be found in the Lon Chaney vehicle “The Penalty” (1920). All this proves that disabilities were often linked to villains.

Gostei muito de “I’ve got plenty of nothing” e “It ain’t necessarily so”.

I’m surprised because the songs from “Porgy and Bess” are not as well-known as other Gershwin songs. I liked a lot “I’ve got plenty of nothing” and “It ain’t necessarily so”. There are moments in which Poitier’s and Dandridge’s singing (dubbed respectively by Robert McFerrin and Adele Addison) overlap, and although it is difficult to apprehend the words of the songs, it’s a nice effect.

“Porgy and Bess” isn’t considered a household classic because, being controversial - because of Bess’s drug use - when it was released, it was shown only in a few cities and the complete, 138-minute-long version, basically disappeared (I only found one on YouTube lasting for 115 minutes). It was also the last movie produced by Samuel Goldwyn. It’s recorded that the film only recovered half of its budget. Despite all that, the film was added to the National Film Registry in 2011.

The stage version of “Porgy and Bess”, back in the mid-1930s, was directed by Rouben Mamoulian, who was hired as director but soon fired as the production was recovering from a fire that destroyed costumes and sets. Otto Preminger, the new director, had a previous romance with Dorothy Dandridge, but it ended by the time the film was shot, and he mistreated her and Poitier on set.

The choreographer was the legendary Hermes Pan, who was Fred Astaire’s partner at choreographing his famous 1930s musicals, but overall Pan choreographed 89 movies. Besides that, the music was conducted by the maestro André Previn, who was once married to Mia Farrow.

The costumes were made by Irene Sharaff. The winner of five Oscars and one Tony, Irene was born in 1910 in Boston and worked as an illustrator before making costumes to both theater, including ballets, and film. She was the dressmaker for over thirty movies - the first being “Meet Me in St Louis” (1944) and the last “Mommie Dearest” (1981) - and died in 1993.

“Porgy and Bess” is one of these films that had an interesting story, but a more interesting backstory. Do you believe that in the 1940s Columbia executive Harry Cohn wanted to buy the rights of the play to make a movie starring Al Jolson, Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth, all in blackface? Ew. “Porgy and Bess” has its flaws, but we must remember that it could have been much worse…

Magnólia: O Barco das Ilusões (1936) / Show Boat (1936)

One of my favorite singers / actors is Paul Robeson. I’ve always been intrigued with the lyrics of one tune commonly associated with Robeson: Ol’ Man River. The lyrics are those: “I’m tired of living but scared of dying”. I’ve heard quite a few old people saying they were tired of living, but a healthy adult saying this shocked me. It was because I didn’t get the context, something I fixed by finally watching “Show Boat” (1936).

You know you’re in for a treat when a whole parade brings the credits.

The Hawks are the managers of a show boat whose sighting is enough to make all the people - and the animals! - of a town excited. They only have one wish: that their daughter Magnolia (Irene Dunne) becomes a respectable person, that is, that she never becomes a show boat attraction. But Magnolia, or Nola, dreams about singing, dancing and acting for the public.

She gets her big chance after a shameful episode: it’s discovered that Steve (Donald Cook) and Julie (Helen Morgan), the stars of the show, are a mixed-race couple, a thing forbidden in Mississippi. In a country where “one drop of negro blood makes you a negro”, having fair skin doesn’t make a person be seen as white. The whole episode might sound as a problem from a distant past, but don’t be fooled: the last segregation law only fell in 1965 and genetics still dictate who is white and who isn’t. In “Show Boat”, Julie and Steve have to leave the show.

Since she was close to Julie, Magnolia knew the lead part and could replace her, to her mother’s desperation. As the leading man, the Hawks hire a passerby, Gaylord Ravenal (Allan Jones) from Tennessee. He and Magnolia have a magnificent chemistry, after all, they’re in love! But this is a musical melodrama, so you can expect that many hardships will come their way.

The director choice may look odd: James Whale, the same guy who directed “Frankenstein” (1931), among other monster movies. In the Ol’ Man River sequence, there are some inspired camera angles and shadows telling the story. “Show Boat” ended up being the favorite among Whale’s own films.

The music is by Jerome Kern and the lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The songs are more operatic, such as the ones in the Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald movies. They suit perfectly the style of Allan Jones, who also starred in the Marx Brothers vehicle “A Night at the Opera” (1935).

We talked about the good, now comes the bad and the ugly: racism. When Irene Dunne starts doing the cakewalk it’s simply offensive. And then it gets worse: she sings while doing blackface. Moreover, Hattie McDaniel is stuck in a Mamie kind of role. Paul Robeson’s Joe is portrayed as lazy - even though his songs are the best in the movie.

Now that I have watched “Show Boat”, I know there is more to the Ol’ Man River lyrics: Paul Robeson sings about his wish to cross the Jordan River, meaning he’s looking for freedom and redemption. Dying in one life to start anew. In the end, the film might be a saga focusing on a white family in the entertainment business, but what remains and shall survive through the ages is Paul Robeson’s big number.

O Cantor de Jazz (1927) / The Jazz Singer (1927)

O cinema finalmente podia falar.

It’s a lie that I had never watched “The Jazz Singer”. I once watched about half of it in a class. Half-spoiled, here I am to review this movie that was a game changer. “Wait a minute, wait a minute! You ain’t heard nothing yet” were the words that changed everything. Cinema finally could talk.

It’s expected that Jakie Rabinowitz (Robert Gordon) becomes a Cantor like his father (Warner Oland) - and five generations before him. A Cantor or Hazzan is a Jewish musician who presents prayers in the synagogue in the form of songs. To justify the boy’s refusal to step up as a Cantor, his mother (Eugenie Besserer) says “he has all the hymns in his head, but not in his heart”. The father finds Jakie singing ragtime tunes at a bar and, violently bringing him home, spanks his son. Jakie leaves home and vows to never return.

Years later, we find Jack Robin (Al Jolson) as a jazz singer. He finds a fan as well as a lover in Mary Dale (May McAvoy), who describes his singing as “having a tear in his voice”. She is an artist too and finds a spot for Jack in her revue. After touring the country, they go back ton New York, where Jack will face his past and make a decision that will affect his future.

Al Jolson, born Asa Yoelson in what is now Lithuania, was known as “the World’s Greatest Entertainer” in his heyday. Forever changing Broadway with his singing style in the 1920s, after Pearl Harbor he became the first singer to entertain the troops overseas. Al Jolson started his career in the circus and quickly moved up to vaudeville, Broadway and cinema, almost making his first film in 1923: D.W. Griffith’s “Mammy’s Boy” was never completed. His second attempt at cinema was “The Jazz Singer”. Influencing crooners such as Bing Crosby, everything that Jolson touched became gold.

In a “blink and you miss it” moment you can see Myrna Loy as a chorus girl at the theater, saying about Jack: “He hasn’t a chance with Mary”. Born in 1905, Loy had been typecast as a vamp in silent movies, but her image changed to a “perfect wife” type in the 1930s, culminating with her being voted the Queen of the Movies in 1938. The lead of “The Jazz Singer” had a different path: often cited as “the least-talented leading lady in silents”, May McAvoy disliked the roles Warner Bros chose for her after this movie, and retired when she got married in 1929.

Part silent, part talkie, it’s no wonder that the audience would go crazy when suddenly they heard Al Jolson’s voice. Except that this wasn’t the first thing the audience heard, at the 22 minute mark. Before there were songs performed by the young Jakie and the older Jack, as well as a Jewish hymn. Synchronized sound was not new - you could find sound effects in previous films, such as 1926’s “Don Juan” -, the novelty was the synchronized dialogue. As a curiosity, we must sign that both Myrna Loy and Warner Oland also appeared in “Don Juan”.

But the plan wasn’t to have synchronized dialogue as well: only songs were supposed to be recorded at the studio. When Al Jolson ad-libbed “Wait a minute…” after the first song, film producer Sam Warner liked it so much that he insisted on keeping the line and other improvised dialogue. This would come with a cost: production was so strenuous on Sam Warner that he died the day before the film was released to the cast and crew. The film premiered to the general public many months later.

Everything is fun and games until we reach a critical point: suddenly there it is, the infamous sequence of Al Jolson in blackface. This deplorable practice wasn’t frowned upon in 1927 and it could be seen as a way of portraying cultural assimilation. Jakie was Jewish and, like the black population, considered a second-rate citizen. Jolson was a civil rights advocate in his time - that is obviously different from the actors who were civil rights activists in the 1960s - and seeing him in blackface is seeing someone become truly American. Yes, in a sense blackface defined America in its time.

“The Jazz Singer” is a film about the fight between old and new, tradition and modernity. Soon, because of this film, cinema as a whole would face the same dilemma. A Letterboxd comment said that, if another movie had made the leap from silence to synchronized sound, “The Jazz Singer” would be forgotten today, and this is not wrong. Jolson’s subsequent film, “The Singing Fool” (1928), was a box office smash but is rarely talked about today. Some things are simply meant to be, and this film was meant to be enshrined in History.
