Vênus, a Deusa do Amor (1948) / One Touch of Venus (1948)

There were many classic film actresses that could be called goddesses – like, too many to mention. But only a handful of them went on to actually play goddesses on screen. One of them was Rita Hayworth in “Down to Earth” (1947). The following year, another movie about a goddess who comes to Earth and falls in love with a mortal was made: “One Touch of Venus”. The actress wisely chosen to play the love goddess was Ava Gardner.

The credits roll over a Greek amphitheatre. When we’re done with the credits, Eddie Hatch (Robert Walker) appears behind the amphitheatre, revealing that it was a window shop model. Clumsy Eddie is then called by his boss Savory (Tom Conway) to fix a curtain drape that covers a statue of the love goddess Venus. Eddie becomes infatuated by the statue and, after one glass of champagne, he kisses it. A thunder is heard and the statue comes to life. Now Eddie is in trouble, and Venus, the love goddess (Ava Gardner) will only bring him more problems.

First, Eddie is accused by his boss of stealing the statue. He tells him and the police the truth, but nobody believes that a marble statue simply walked away. Eddie is sent home, where he is helped by his friend Joe (Dick Haymes) and his girlfriend Gloria (Olga San Juan). Soon Venus reappears there, and they have to run away to escape Gloria’s jealous fury.

In her human form, Venus doesn’t use her powers often – only in crucial moments. Her biggest power is seduction, and when she descends from the Olympus, love gets in the air. Moreover, she just wants to have fun while she is spending a few days on Earth. Considering her beauty, sex appeal and fun-loving personality, we can say that choosing young Ava Gardner, then 23, was a perfect move.

If you’re only familiar with Robert Walker as the sinister Bruno in “Strangers on a Train” (1951), you’re in for a huge surprise. He is very funny as Eddie, making exaggerated faces and appearing as flabbergasted by all the action as Cary Grant is in “Arsenic and Old Lace” (1944). Another great performance is Eve Arden’s, who play Savory’s secretary Molly, who is in love with her boss. She has many hilarious one-liners and also shines with her facial expressions.

One Touch of Venus” is a romantic comedy-fantasy and also a musical. There are three musical numbers, and in all three Ava Gardner’s singing voice is dubbed by Eileen Wilson. In her short career that lasted only 12 films, Eileen dubbed actresses like Jane Russell in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” (1953) and Ava in three occasions: in “The Hucksters” (1947), “The Bribe” (1949) and here in “One Touch of Venus”.

The plot is originated in a historical fact mixed with a Greek myth. The historical influence is the temple of Venus in the Greek city of Thessaloniki, built in the 6th century B.C. - and  preserved until today. The myth in question is the myth of Pygmalion, a talented sculptor who fell in love with one of his creations. Venus, the goddess of love, went to his studio to see his statues and, moved by his devotion to the statue named Galatea, brought it to life.

We can't avoid comparing “One Touch of Venus” with “Down to Earth”. “Down to Earth” was made in 1947 by Columbia and starred Rita Hayworth as Terpsichore, the muse of music and dance, who falls in love with a mortal who she was at first going to punish. In “One Touch of Venus”, released by Universal in 1948, Venus falls in love with the little things a mortal – who was already in love with her – provides her. Moreover, “Down to Earth” is in Technicolor, and “One Touch of Venus” is in black and white – although it was first supposed to be shot in color, when Mary Pickford bought the rights of the original play to produce a movie in 1945.

“One Touch of Venus” is an underrated movie that could have been longer. However, it has more positive aspects than negative ones, and it is a movie that will make you smile and wish you could experience a love inspired by Venus herself.

Leaving home in order to pursue your dreams in never easy. Not that I have done this myself – I only came close – but movies make me think that it is not easy. And “Stage Door” in particular gives me this feeling.

The newest arrival in Mrs. Orcutt's boarding house for young and aspiring actresses is Terry Randall (Katharine Hepburn), a fancy and polite lady. This doesn't mean that she can't defend herself against the other girls, who are very different from her. Terry is fluent in sarcasm, and uses it perfectly in a battle of wits with her new roommate, Jean Maitland (Ginger Rogers).

Jean is also not very friendly with snobbish Linda Shaw (Gail Patrick), who is going out with manager Anthony Powell (Adolphe Menjou). Powell is the last hope for another girl in the boarding house, Kay Hamilton (Andrea Leeds, in a great performance), who hasn't worked in over a year and has been starving in order to be able to pay the rent.

The girls rely on a man's wish to become stars and maintain their fame. We must see the parallel between this and the recent Weinstein case – Weinsteingate, maybe? - that shrieked Hollywood. In entertainment, women are still held hostage of man's wishes – often sexual wishes – if they want to have a career. Show business is the same, 80 years later.

When Terry enters Powell's office to confront him – right after Kay fainted outside the office when she was told that Powell wouldn't see her – he says many, many sexist things to her, like “most women should wash dishes and have a family instead of trying a career at the theatre”. It's infuriating. And it's even worse if we remember that, even being popular and dapper, actor Adolphe Menjou was like this in real life: a staunch conservative who appeared in the HUAC hearing VOLUNTARILY to name names and destroy lives..

Of course, being this way, Powell never keeps a girl for too long. He trades Linda for Jean, and in their first date in his house Jean gets drunk and emotional, believing all his lies. After Jean, it's Terry's time to visit Powell, and she does it in a badass way: she confronts him and doesn't accept his compliments or hypocrisies. Terry is there to make business between equals, not to submit herself to a manager.

We also have in the boarding house Eve Arden as Eve, the lanky owner of a cat, a very young Ann Miller, Constance Collier as an older mentor obsessed with her bygone fame, and Lucille Ball as Judith, the street-wise, cynical and sarcastic friend all theater girls need – a role similar to the one she played in “Dance, Girl, Dance” (1940). In a sense, this is a role similar to those Joan Blondell played many times in pre-Codes. It's nice to see Lucy, with darker hair and at only 26 years old, being a little pessimistic and delivering one-liners.

I understand all the girls living in the boarding house are young, in their late teens or early twenties, but they are usually bickering and discussing. All right, Kay is loved by them all, and loves them all, but all the other girls still have their “cliques” like in a bullying-full high school. It's another film that wants to prove that there can't be friendship among females if there is not rivalry before.

Stage Door” was a successful stage play written by Edna Ferber. For the movie version, a lot was altered and  the screenplay seems too diffuse at times – and it commits the crime to create a male manager character, who didn't exist in the play, that becomes the center of the movie and the discussion, as you may have noticed in this review. In the end, “Stage Door” is a film with flaws, but one that shows how life in the show business is, above all, a ruthless cycle.
