Many people remember Mia's relationships with three important names in the arts – Frank Sinatra, André Previn and Woody Allen – but ignore that she was Hollywood royalty from birth. The daughter of a movie star and a director, she was always meant for the limelight. Let's see her family ties:

Mãe: Maureen O'Sullivan (1911-1998)

Nascida na Irlanda, a mãe de Mia é mais conhecida hoje por ter interpretado Jane em uma série de filmes de Tarzan protagonizados por Johnny Weissmuller nos anos 1930 e 40. Ex-colega de escola de Vivien Leigh, Maureen começou no cinema como mocinha, e a partir de meados dos anos 40 apareceu em muitos dos filmes de seu marido, até a morte dele, quando ela prosseguiu atuando no cinema e no teatro. Ela sofreu um duro golpe quando seu filho mais velho faleceu em 1958, e encontrou na atuação a força para prosseguir.

Mother: Maureen O'Sullivan (1911-1998)

Born in Ireland, Mia's mother is best known today for playing Jane in a series of Tarzan movies starring Johnny Weissmuller in the 1930s and 1940s. A former school classmate of Vivien Leigh, Maureen was first cast as an ingenué, and from the mid-1940s onwards appeared mainly in her husband's films up until his death, when she continued her career in film and theater. She suffered a hard blow when her oldest son died in 1958, and found in acting the strength to carry on.

John Villiers Farrow foi um diretor de cinema mais conhecido por filmes noir como “Trágico Destino” (1950) e “O Relógio Verde” (1948), um filme estrelado por Maureen. Ele também ganhou o Oscar de Melhor Roteiro Adaptado por “A Volta ao Mundo em 80 Dias” (1956).

Nascido na Austrália, ele chegou em Hollywood como roteirista, e deveria trabalhar em um filme do Tarzan em 1936, mas o contrato não se materializou e ele se tornou diretor. Ele se alistou na Marinha canadense na Segunda Guerra, mas teve tifo em 1942 e foi dispensado. Depois de curado, ele trabalhou para a Paramount, RKO e como diretor freelancer.

John e Maureen se casaram em 1936 e tiveram sete filhos. Maria de Lourdes Villiers Farrow, ou Mia Farrow, é a mais velha do gênero feminino.

Father: John Farrow (1904-1963)

John Villiers Farrow was a film director best known for noirs like “Where Danger Lives” (1950) and “The Big Clock” (1948), a film starring O'Sullivan. He also won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Around the World in Eighty Days” (1956). Born in Australia, he entered Hollywood as a screenwriter, and was supposed to work in a Tarzan picture in 1936, but the deal didn't happen and he started directing. He enlisted the Canadian Navy during WWII, but had typhus in 1942 and had to leave the Navy. Once healthy again, he worked for Paramount, RKO and as a freelance director.

Farrow and O'Sullivan married in 1936 and had seven children. Maria de Lourdes Villiers Farrow, or Mia Farrow, is the oldest surviving child.

Você pode não conhecer esta irmã de Mia, mas já deve ter ouvido uma música sobre ela: “Dear Prudence”, dos Beatles. Sister: Prudence Farrow (born 1948)

You may not know Mia's sister Prudence, but you have heard a song about her: “Dear Prudence”, by The Beatles. She met the band while in India studying Transcendental Meditation and they became friends, although she preferred to isolate and meditate instead of socializing with them. She also worked in the art department of “The Purple Rose of Cairo” (1985).

Quando Mia nasceu, em 1945, a Sinatramania estava no auge. Frank Sinatra se tornou uma superestrela no começo dos anos 40, sendo um cantor fantástico e um jovem bonito. Husband: Frank Sinatra (married 1966-1968)

When Mia was born, in 1945, Sinatramania was in full swing. Frank Sinatra became a superstar in the early 1940s, as both a fantastic crooner and a handsome young fellow. In the following years he also showed his talent in acting, and even won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “From Here to Eternity” (1953).

Mia and Frank met in 1964 at the cafeteria of Twentieth Century Fox studios, where he was making a film and she was acting in a TV series. They married in 1966 in a private ceremony and were from the start the target of much criticism from the press, fellow comedians and actors and also from Sinatra’s fans. It’s said that Sinatra wanted Mia to abandon her film career, which she refused, and they ended up agreeing that she could make one film per year. In 1968, when she was shooting “Rosemary’s Baby”, Sinatra filled for divorce. Mia was tempted to abandon the project, but chose acting over marriage. Even though they seemed a mismatched pair, Mia later confessed that Sinatra was the love of her life.

O músico André Previn conheceu Mia, que era 16 anos mais nova que ele, quando ainda estava casado com sua segunda esposa. André se separou da esposa quando Mia descobriu que estava grávida de gêmeos. Eles se casaram em 1970, tiveram três filhos e adotaram mais três. Musician André Previn met Mia, who was 16 years his junior, when he was still married to his second wife. André divorced his wife when Mia found out she was pregnant with twins. They married in 1970, had three children and adopted three more. German-born Previn won 11 Grammys and four Oscars for “Gigi” (1958), “Porgy and Bess” (1959), “Irma La Douce” (1963) and “My Fair Lady” (1964) – and he was nominated for nine more Oscars. André was also the first musician to have a jazz album that sold over one million copies.

Não sou fã de Woody Allen e há muita polêmica sobre ele. Mesmo assim, ele fez seus melhores filmes tendo Mia como protagonista. Partner: Woody Allen (together 1979-1992)

I’m not particularly fond of Woody Allen and there is a lot of polemic surrounding him. Nevertheless, he made his best movies with Mia as his lead. Much more than a muse, she was the force that made films like “The Purple Rose of Cairo” and “Hannah and her Sisters” (1986) work. Together, Allen and Mia made 12 films.

Tendo sido batizado com o sobrenome O'Sullivan de sua avó, Ronan se formou na universidade Bard College aos 15 anos, foi porta-voz da UNICEF, foi conselheiro de Obama e Hillary Clinton – e parece que este é só o começo de sua impressionante carreira.

Very few journalists had the same impact in Hollywood as Ronan Farrow. One of the voices denouncing Harvey Weinstein as a sexual predator, Ronan's series of articles generated a book, a podcast and gave him and his team a Pulitzer prize. In the film world, he voiced two minor characters in Studio Ghibli movies “From Up on Poppy Hill” (2011) and “The Wind Rises” (2013).

Carrying his grandmother's O'Sullivan last name, Ronan graduated Bard College at only 15, was a spokesperson for UNICEF, advised both Obama and Hillary Clinton – and looks like this is just the beginning of his impressive career.

E agora chegamos à própria Mia. Sobrevivente de poliomielite – ela tinha nove anos quando contraiu a doença – mãe de 14 filhos – quatro biológicos e dez adotivos – atriz, filantropa, embaixatriz da UNICEF. Mia foi indicada a sete Globos de Ouro e elogiada por seu trabalho com a caridade. Tendo perdido três de seus filhos adotivos, mostrou força para se reerguer e continuar fazendo o bem, sendo esta mulher notável que nem sempre tem a total admiração que merece.

And now we get to Mia herself. A polio survivor – she was nine when she got the disease – a mother of 14 – four biological, ten adoptive children – actress, philanthropist, UNICEF ambassador. Mia was nominated for seven Golden Globes and was praised by her charity work. Having lost three of her adoptive children, she showed strength to carry on and keep on doing good, being this notable woman who not always has the admiration she deserves.

Judy e Liza: de mãe para filha / Judy and Liza: from mother to daughter

O talento é algo hereditário? Pesquisadores dizem que talento é 50% herdado nos genes e 50% desenvolvido com a prática. Nós não vamos nos aprofundar no campo da genética hoje, apenas apresentaremos um caso que, considerado sozinho, provaria que talento pode ser herança de família: o caso de Judy Garland e Liza Minnelli.

Is talent hereditary? Researchers say that talent is 50% a matter of genes, and 50% a matter of hard work. We won't dive deeper into the genetics field today, we'll simply show a case that, considered isolated, would prove that talent can run in the family: the case of Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli.

Liza Minnelli, quando jovem, tinha a aparência e a voz da mãe. Agora que está mais velha, ela se parece mais com o pai, Vincente Minnelli. Um caso semelhante ao de outra filha de uma rainha do cinema: Isabella Rossellini, que se parecia com a mãe, Ingrid Bergman, quando era mais jovem, e agora lembra mais o pai, Roberto Rossellini.

Liza Minnelli, at a younger age, looked and sounded a lot like her mother. Now that she is older, she resembles more her father, Vincente Minnelli. A similar thing happened to another daughter of cinema royalty: Isabella Rossellini, who looked like her mother, Ingrid Bergman, in her earlier years, and now looks more like her father, Roberto Rossellini.

Liza fez sua estreia no cinema in utero – ou quase isso. Judy, então com 23 anos de idade, estava grávida de Liza durante as filmagens de “Quando as Nuvens Passam” (1946), mas sua barriga ainda não é evidente o bastante. A garotinha que nasceu da união de Judy e Vincente foi batizada com o nome de Liza, uma canção de Ira Gershwin, seu padrinho. Com catorze meses de idade, Liza Minnelli fez sua estreia de fato no cinema, na sequência final de “A Noiva Desconhecida” (1949), protagonizado por sua mãe.

Liza first appeared on film in the womb – or almost. Judy, then 23 years old, was pregnant with Liza during shooting “Till the Clouds Roll By” (1946), but her bump is not big enough to be seen onscreen. The little girl she gave birth to was named after her godfather’s Ira Gershwin song Liza. At the age of fourteen months, Liza Minnelli did her real film debut, in the final sequence of “In the Good Old Summertime” (1949), in which her mother was the lead.

Na infância, Liza era comumente fotografada ao lado dos pais no estúdio. Quando sua mãe saía em turnê, ela a acompanhava, e por isso passava muito tempo em hotéis. Este fato fez de Liza a inspiração para a protagonista do livro Eloise, escrito por Kay Thompson, madrinha de Liza. During her childhood, Liza was often photographed with her parents at the studio. When her mother was on tour, she would go with her, that's why she spent a lot of time in hotels. This fact made Liza the inspiration for the character Eloise from the book of the same name, written by Liza's godmother, Kay Thompson. Her parents divorced in 1951, when she was five, and Judy remarried in 1952. When Liza was 13, she was featured on radio singing “Over the Rainbow”. Listen to her recording HERE.

Depois disso, Liza apareceria com frequência na TV, começando com “Tonight Starring Jack Paar” e “The Gene Kelly Show”, respectivamente de 1958 e 1959. Ela foi cantora convidada em “The Judy Garland Show” em duas ocasiões em 1963. Com 17 anos, ela já mostrava que tinha uma voz poderosa e muito carisma. Assistindo aos clipes do programa, é possível perceber como Liza e Judy se amavam. Foi também durante estas apresentações em seu programa que Judy percebeu que sua garotinha era agora uma mulher crescida que tinha sua própria carreira artística.

Next, Liza would appear on TV regularly, starting in “Tonight Starring Jack Paar” and “The Gene Kelly Show”, respectively from 1958 and 1959. She was a guest at “The Judy Garland Show” twice in 1963. At 17, she already showed a powerful voice and a lot of charisma. By watching the clips, you can see how mother and daughter loved each other. It was also during this show that Judy realized that her little girl was a grown up pursuing her own career.

Quando falava sobre Liza, Judy a descrevia como “muito esperta” e “com os pés no chão o tempo todo”. Muitos anos depois, Liza disse que Judy era a melhor mãe do mundo. Ela diz também que herdou seu senso de humor da ‘mama’.

While talking about Liza, Judy called her “very wise” and “with her feet on the ground all the time”. Many years later, Liza said Judy was the best mother in the world. She says she inherited her sense of humor from her mama.

Nem tudo eram flores entre mãe e filha, obviamente. Liza vivia com Judy, seu padrasto Sid Luft e seus meios-irmãos Lorna e Joe durante os anos 50 e 60. Os papéis de mãe e filha eram muitas vezes trocados, porque Liza muitas vezes tinha de cuidar da mãe quando Judy tinha suas crises e problemas com abuso de remédios. Judy tinha pouco contato com a família, segundo a minissérie “Eu e Minhas Sombras” (2001), quando faleceu em 1969. Liza fez todos os trâmites para o funeral da mãe. Ela continuou próxima do pai, Vincente Minnelli, até ele morrer em 1986, e ela é próxima de Lorna até hoje.

Not everything was wonderful between mother and daughter, of course. Liza lived with Judy, her stepfather Sid Luft and her half-siblings Lorna and Joe during the 50s and 60s. The roles of mother and daughter were often reversed, because she often looked after her mother when Judy had her on-and-off problems with mental health and pill addiction. Judy was estranged from her kids, according to the miniseries “Me and My Shadows” (2001), when she died in 1969. Liza arranged everything for her mother's funeral. She remained friends with her father, Vincente Minnelli, until he died, in 1986, and is close to her sister Lorna until today.

Liza não canta as músicas da mãe, alegando que “elas já foram cantadas”. Quando perguntam a ela sobre Judy, ela só tem coisas boas para contar. Liza tinha apenas 23 anos quando Judy faleceu – a mesma idade que eu tenho hoje e não consigo imaginar minha vida sem minha mãe. O tempo de Judy e Liza juntas foi relativamente curto, mas Liza prova que o impacto de uma mãe na vida de alguém é para sempre.

Liza doesn't sing her mother's song, saying that “they have already been sung”. When asked about Judy, she only has good things to say. Liza was only 23 when Judy died – the same age I am now and I couldn't imagine how it would be losing my mom. Their time together was not long, but Liza proves that a mother's impact in someone's life lasts forever.

Algumas famílias têm tradições estranhas. Os Huston, por exemplo, têm três gerações de ganhadores do Oscar (um recorde apenas igualado pela família Coppola). E tudo começou com um imigrante canadense.

Some families have weird traditions. Others have golden traditions. The Hustons, for instance, have three generations of Oscar winners (a record only shared with the Coppolas). And it all started with a Canadian immigrant.

Walter Thomas Huston nasceu em Toronto, Canadá, em 1883. Ele estudou engenharia, mas sua verdadeira paixão era a atuação. Mesmo assim, em 1904, quando ele se casou com a jornalista Rhea Gore, ele decidiu se dedicar apenas à engenharia. Sua carreira como engenheiro durou quase cinco anos, até que um erro de Walter ao consertar um reservatório quase deixou uma cidade debaixo d’água. Em 1909, ele se divorciou de Rhea e passou a apenas atuar.

Walter Thomas Huston was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1883. He studied engineering, but his passion was acting. Yet, in 1904, when he got married to journalist Rhea Gore, he dedicated himself only to engineering. His career as an engineer lasted nearly five years, until a mistake made by Walter in a town’s reservoir nearly caused a flood. In 1909, he divorced Rhea and became a full-time actor.

Ele precisaria de mais de uma década para encontrar sucesso na Broadway. Walter estava também entre os atores de teatro que foram para Hollywood com a popularização do cinema falado. Huston fez seu primeiro filme em 1929.

He would need more than a decade to find success on Broadway. Walter was also among the stage actors who went to Hollywood when talkies came. Huston debuted in movies in 1929. 

No ano seguinte ele interpretou o mais amado presidente norte-americano, Abraham Lincoln, no filme homônimo dirigido por D.W. Griffith. Walter mais uma vez interpretaria um ícone estadunidense em 1943, quando ele fez o papel do Tio Sam em “O Ataque a Pearl Harbor”, um filme de propaganda feito durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.

The following year he played the most beloved American president, Abraham Lincoln, in the homonym film directed by D.W. Griffith. Walter would once again play an American icon in 1943, when he portrayed Uncle Sam in “December 7^th: The Movie”, a film to boost the country’s moral during WWII.

Walter fazia sucesso nas telas no começo dos anos 30 quando seu único filho, o futuro diretor John Huston, se envolveu em um acidente automobilístico. John estava dirigindo bêbado e acabou atropelando e matando a atriz e bailarina brasileira de 23 anos Diva Tosca. Diva era casada com o ator brasileiro Raul Roulien (o cara que sugeriu colocar Fred Astaire e Ginger Rogers para dançarem juntos pela primeira vez!), que tinha uma carreira de sucesso no cinema e na música... até que os Huston cruzaram seu caminho. Raul processou o motorista bêbado que fez dele um viúvo, mas o poderoso e superprotetor Walter Huston quis proteger seu filho e usou sua influência para que o júri inocentasse John. Mesmo assim, ele pagou uma indenização ao pobre Raul. Por causa deste pequeno escândalo, Raul Roulien não conseguiu mais trabalho em Hollywood e voltou para o Brasil, onde morreu em 2000.

Walter was enjoying screen success in the early 1930s when his only son, future director John Huston, got involved in a car accident. John was drunk and ended up hitting and killing 23-year-old Brazilian actress and ballerina Diva Tosca. Diva was married to Brazilian actor Raul Roulien (aka the man who put together Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers), who had been enjoying a career in film and music… until the Hustons got in his way. Raul sued the drunk driver who made him a widow, but powerful and overprotective Walter Huston protected his son and bribed the jury to make John be proclaimed innocent, but paid an amount of money to grieving Roulien. Because of the small scandal, Raul Roulien couldn’t find work in Hollywood anymore and went back to Brazil, where he died in 2000.

Naquela época John tinha vinte e poucos anos, já havia aparecido em minúsculos papéis no cinema e estava então escrevendo diálogos e roteiros. Seu grande salto para a fama viria quando ele adaptou e dirigiu “O Falcão Maltês” em 1941. Ele dirigiu muitos outros filmes inesquecíveis em sua carreira, e viveu uma vida conturbada, se casando cinco vezes e tendo cinco filhos.

By then John Huston was in his 20s, and had already done bit parts and was writing scenarios and dialogues. His big break would come when he adapted and directed “The Maltese Falcon” in 1941. He directed many unforgettable films and lived an erratic life, marrying five times and having five kids.

Anjelica Huston, filha de John, nasceu quando ele estava no Congo Belga filmando “Uma Aventura na África” (1952). Ela fecha a trindade de ganhadores do Oscar na família. Anjelica ganhou o Oscar de Melhor Atriz Coadjuvante por “A Honra do Poderoso Prizzi” (1984), filme dirigido por seu pai. John ganhou dois Oscars por “O Tesouro de Sierra Madre” (1948): Melhor Diretor e Roteiro Adaptado. Este mesmo filme deu a Walter Huston seu único Oscar, de Melhor Ator Coadjuvante.

John’s daughter Anjelica Huston was born when he was in the Belgian Congo shooting “The African Queen” (1952). She closes the trinity of Oscar winners in the family. Anjelica won the Oscar as a Supporting Actress for “Prizzi’s Honor” (1984), directed by her father. John won two Oscars for “The Treasure of Sierra Madre” (1948): best Director and Adapted Screenplay. This same movie gave Walter Huston his only actor, for a Supporting Role.

O filho mais velho de John, Tony Huston, já escreveu roteiros para o cinema. Tony é pai do ator Jack Huston, que protagonizou o muito criticado remake de Ben-Hur de 2016. Danny, também filho de John, é um ator que já participou de vários filmes, entre eles “Grandes Olhos” (2014).

John’s oldest son, Tony Huston, did some writing for the screen. Tony is the father of actor Jack Huston, who starred in the much criticized 2016 version of Ben-Hur. John’s son Danny is also an actor, and appeared in such films as “Big Eyes” (2014).

Entre todos os Huston, Walter é meu favorito. Ele é ótimo mesmo em papéis pequenos e emocionalmente exigentes, como em “A Canção da Vitória” (1942). Mas seu melhor trabalho é, em minha opinião, como o protagonista de “Fogo de Outono” (1936). Para os Huston, tudo começou com Walter.

Of all the Hustons, Walter is my favorite. He is great in small but heavily emotional roles, like in “Yankee Doodle Dandy” (1942). But his best work is, in my opinion, as the lead in “Dodsworth” (1936). For the Hustons, everything started with Walter.
