Ernst Lubitsch has appeared in this blog many times, in the many phases of his successful career. What else could we expect from someone who was an actor-turned-director, who worked in Germany and Hollywood, in a career that lasted over 30 years, from the 1910s to the 1940s, if not an eclectic body of work? I’m a huge fan, but it was by chance that I chose three films by Lubitsch in a rol to review in my list of 12 classics for 2026. The first title is the delightful screwball comedy “Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife” from 1938.

In the French Riviera, a kerfuffle in a department store involving pajamas approaches two strangers: the handsome Michael (Gary Cooper) and the pretty Nicole (Claudette Colbert). Michael falls desperately in love and starts following Nicole, right after making a business deal with her father, the impoverished Marquis de Loiselle (Edward Everett Horton).

At the beach Michael finds Nicole and his employee Albert (David Niven). Things progress quickly between the couple. Two weeks before the wedding, however, Nicole becomes aware that Michael had been married before - seven times! She’s horrified, but sees in the wedding a business possibility and accepts to marry if she receives 100,000 dollars.

They go to Czechoslovakia for their honeymoon, but the trip is not joyful. In a silent sequence, Michael is inspired by reading Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” and thinks he too can tame his new wife, but he gets a slap and a bite instead. They end up agreeing with a “no lovemaking, no quarrel” contract… but will it last?

It’s curious that an important plot prop from this movie is a bathtub that belonged to Louis XIV. Nineteen years prior, Lubitsch filmed “Madame DuBarry”, about the famous lover of King Louis XV. In “Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife” Gary Cooper mistakes information about the two kings and it was curious to notice Lubitsch’s connections with the two royals.

Claudette Colbert is delightful, isn’t she? Born Émilie Claudette Chauchoin near Paris in 1903, she and her family went to America in 1906. She grew up speaking French and English and wanting to be a painter. She debuted on Broadway in a small role at age 20. Her screen debut, “For the Love of Mike” (1927), is currently lost. She signed with Paramount in 1928 and became one of the most popular actresses of the screen in the following decade. By the time “Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife” was made, she had already worked with Lubitsch - in “The Smiling Lieutenant” (1931) - and with Gary Cooper - in “His Woman”, also from 1931.

The movie is full of funny lines and innuendos. Many sentences, said in unusual contexts or with no context at all of the previous conversation, make characters think about an intimacy that doesn’t exist in reality. Probably because of these innuendos, the film was rated B by the Legion of Decency: morally objectionable in part, which for me is a compliment.

Claudette Colbert’s clothes in this movie are breathtaking, exactly the kind of clothes I’d like to wear. The one responsible for the wardrobe was Travis Banton, key wardrobe artist for Paramount in the 1930s. He became someone of notice when Mary Pickford chose one of his dresses to wear on her wedding to Douglas Fairbanks. In 1938, he had already dressed Colbert in “Cleopatra” (1934), but he’s better remembered today for dressing Marlene Dietrich in several films.

“Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife” was based on a French play and the screenplay was written by Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett. The two couldn’t be more different: Brackett was 14 years older than Wilder, came from a rich family and had a Harvard Law degree. Nevertheless, the duo wrote 16 films together, starting here and going on to hits such as “The Lost Weekend” (1945) and “Sunset Boulevard” (1950), being this one their last collaboration.

Let’s talk about multiple marriages. In Hollywood, nobody can beat Zsa Zsa Gabor, who got married nine times! Elizabeth Taylor comes close, married eight times - twice with Richard Burton! Lana Turner and Artie Shaw also got married eight times. It’s said that “Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife” was based on the private life of millionaire Tommy Manville, who got married thirteen times.

Veremos no próximo mês!

“Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife” had been filmed before in 1923 starring Gloria Swanson, but this version is a lost film (ugly crying). The 1938 film didn’t do well at the box office, so Paramount released Lubitsch from his contract and the filmmaker went to MGM. What did he do there? We’ll see next month!

Variations on the same theme: A Farewell to Arms (1932 and 1957)

You probably have heard about Ernest Hemingway, the American writer who loved two things: bohemia and cats. None of these appears in the author's most famous book, the novel “A Farewell to Arms”.

Hemingway was an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I, and in 1929 published a book based on these times. In “A Farewell to Arms”, the American ambulance driver Frederic Henry and the English nurse Catherine Barkley fall in love amidst the war. Could love wait until peace arrives? That's basically it. And that's just the beginning of everything.

The years after the book was published, the story was adapted into a play and soon an adaptation to the screen followed. Fredric March, hired to be the leading man, refused it when he heard that Frank Borzage was assigned as the director. It was a perfect opportunity for a tall and charming man who was getting more and more space in Hollywood: Gary Cooper.

Next to him there was Helen Hayes, an admired lady of the theater – where she started at five playing male roles – and who had just won the Best Actress Oscar the year before. In just an hour and a half – the 1957 version is two and a half hours long – the more than 300 pages from Hemingway's novel are told with a lot of ommissions. The focus is on the couple, not the war.

Like anything Borzage did, “A Farewell to Arms” is a feast for the eyes. You are in the war, but you have a beautiful palace where the nurses and commanders stay, with a glorious fountain in the garden. This garden is the scenario for the most beautiful and romantic scenes of the movie.

Helen Hayes developed a crush on Gary Cooper, while Cooper and Hemingway became lifelong friends. What didn't make Hemingway happy was how Hollywood tackled his precious material, changing character Rinaldi (played by Adolphe Menjou), and even filming two endings so theater owners could decide if they wanted a happy or a sad ending for the session. In the end, the reviews were mixed, but mostly positive.

Since the beginning we get the impression that David O. Selznick was trying, with his adaptation of “A Farewell to Arms”, to repeat the success of “Gone with the Wind”. The title itself is presented the same way, with huge letter rolling from right to left on the screen. Just like his 1939 film, this one also has breathtaking scenarios, the war theme and an expressive use of color.

The film is lead by Rock Hudson, playing Frederic as a lieutenant, and Jennifer Jones, and also have, as supporting players, Vittoria de Sica, Alberto Sordi and Mercedes McCambridge. An IMDb user didn't like the casting of Jennifer Jones, then Selznick's wife, as the lead (and I have no doubt that, if the producer had met Jennifer in the 1930s, even though she was too young, he would have lobbied for a role for her in the Civil War epic). The user said Jennifer was too old for the part.

Even though I like Jennifer (who is sensational in “The song of Bernadette”,  from 1943), it's clear that the film is focused on Rock's character. But if it was necessary to replace the leading lady, I'd have two suggestions: Deborah Kerr, who was also older than Rock, and Elizabeth Taylor, who seems just perfect for the role.

Selznick only got the rights to adapt Hemingway's book through an exchange: Warner Brothers, who had this right, wanted to make a new version of “A Star is Born”, and Selznick, who produced the 1937 version, had the rights over the story. The exchange was simple and Selznick's ambitions started to pile up.

Looking for authentic scenarios, Selznick fired his first director, John Huston, and sent Charles Vidor to shoot in the Italian Alps. He also didn't save on screen time, and was more faithful to Hemingway's book, although again focusing more on the couple than on the war. In the end, it was a grandiose film, but a box office and critical disappointment.

These were the only two adaptations of “A Farewell to Arms” into feature films. Even though none of the versions is perfect due to the liberties taken, both have qualities and are worthy pieces of movie history.

O veredicto: se você tiver tempo sobrando, veja as duas versões. Mas leia antes o livro!

The verdict: if you have enough time, watch both versions. But read the book first!

Agora e Sempre / Now and Forever (1934)

Most family movies, romantic comedies and movies featuring a child star are quite predictable. At first, “Now and Forever” (1934) seemed quite predictable too. But those were other times, when the Code had just been enforced and the screenwriters had no mercy with Shirley Temple (never forget that they killed her screen mother on Christmas Eve in “Bright Eyes”, also from 1934). And, man, what a wild and weird ride “Now and Forever” is!

Jerome ‘Jerry’ Day is an adventurer, and not an honest one. He travels the world by boat and plane with his sweetheart Toni (Carole Lombard), and uses some schemes to be able to pay their stays in fancy hotels. Right after pretending he’s a financial auditor for a hotel in order to pay his own bill, he receives a letter from his brother-in-law, who wants to discuss the custody of Jerry’s daughter, a little girl who he hasn’t ever bothered mentioning to Toni.

Jerry goes to Connecticut. His initial idea is to “sell” his daughter: he wants 75,000 dollars to let her be stay forever with his brother-in-law. But everything changes when he sees Penelope (Shirley Temple) and realizes that she doesn’t have much fun with her guardian. Jerry refuses the money and takes Penelope with him to Paris, where Toni is waiting.

At first Penelope doesn’t get well with Toni, and in any family movie you might expect that, in the end, they will learn to love each other as mother and daughter. Well, they kind of do it, but there is a bumpy road ahead of Jerry, Toni and little Penny.

And here enters the trouble: Jerry was always surrounded by crooks, and one of them followed him to Paris: Felix Evans (Guy Standing), who doesn’t believe Jerry will be able to adapt to a regular job that pays U$35 a week, especially when Penny’s boarding school is so expensive. That’s why Felix advises Jerry to commit one last felony, for Penny’s sake.

The film is more about Jerry and Penny’s relationship, and how she changes him – kind of. Carole Lombard is the third wheel in this relationship, but her facial expressions in key scenes are way more eloquent than words. Carole also looks gorgeous, and her clothes are to die for.

“Now and Forever” is not a regular Shirley Temple movie because it wasn’t made for her regular studio, Fox, but for Paramount. In the 1930s, Paramount was the house of comedic sophistication (made by Lubitsch and Von Sternberg) and a lot of experimentation. Fox loaned Shirley to Paramount to make two pictures, and this is the second one in the deal. “Now and Forever” is a melodrama, and one that the TCM Database calls “clichéd”.

“Now and Forever” was supposed to have the same leading lady as the other film Shirley did during the loan, “Little Miss Marker”. But Dorothy Dell tragically died in a car crash in June of 1934. She was only 19 years old. According to the legend, Shirley only heard the news about Dell’s death right before filming a crying scene, which made her cry more poignant.
Dorothy Dell

“Now and Forever” is an interesting experience. You’ll laugh, maybe cry, and definitely stay on the edge of your seat. It’s unlike any other movie I’ve seen. It may look like an experiment without a planned outcome, but it ends up being a pleasant one.

Ídolo, Amante e Herói (1942) / The Pride of the Yankees (1942)

Who doesn't love a hero that comes from the lower classes and triumphs, overcoming all difficulties? Lou Gehrig was the son of German immigrants, and just in beginning of the movie his talent as a baseball player is shown with a neighborhood kids' game, a broken window shop and a lecture from Lou's mother, who wanted him to study Engineering at Columbia University.

Lou enters Columbia but, being from a humble household and working as his mother's helper at the college canteen, Lou is not well accepted by his mates. They even tease him in the same way they'd do with Longfellow Deeds – but Lou Gehrig has a bad temper and attacks when teased. However, this is not a problem: as in any inspirational story, Lou will have the last laugh.

Lou Gehrig passed away at age 37. Gary Cooper was older than 40 when the film was shot. “The Pride of the Yankees” is above all a work full of poetic license, made to move an audience that idolized Lou, and was still grieving because of his very recent death. And, to achieve this level of connection, Lou is shown as an average man, shy when he gets close to his idol Babe Ruth or acting foolishly when he falls in love with Eleanor (Teresa Wright).

The most part of the film shows Lou Gehrig’s accomplishments, many times in an idealized way. His marriage do Eleanor is too perfect, and Lou’s mother, for a few minutes, becomes the castrating mother that can’t see her dear son with another woman. Everything is too perfect until the film starts to become interesting – and tragic.

Lou realizes there is something wrong with his muscles. The scene in which he falls from a chair while trying to tie his shoes, in the middle of the New York Yankees’ locker room, is as moving as Eddie Redmayne’s fall as Stephen Hawking in the middle of the university campus in “The Theory of Everything” (2014). It is, after all, the same disease that both have: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

The passage of time is shown through an assemblage of newspaper snippets collected by Eleanor. From the moment Lou starts suffering with his disease until the end, the film becomes outstanding. Gary Cooper didn’t even want to play Lou at the beginning, because he knew nothing about baseball (read HERE about the trick used to show Gary as a convincing ball player), but he was able to add all the drama Lou’s final speech required. You don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy those final minutes – you just need to be human to be left with a lump in your throat.

Amor na Tarde / Love in the Afternoon (1957)

Chevalier! Hepburn! Cooper! Paris!

Chevalier! Hepburn! Cooper! Paris! Fascination! Everything in this movie is callingus to experience romance. It is an unconventional love story, but, under Billy Wilder’s lenses, it becomes a long and delightful flirtation.

The initial narration has Maurice Chevalier's unmistakable accent. Full with Malice, he talks aboutlove in Paris, and images of couples pass through the screen. Maurice plays private eye Charles Chavasse, an expert in extramarital affairs.

Chavasse doesn't want his sordid work to interfere in his daughter's Ariane (Audrey Hepburn) life and ideas. Ariane is a naïve cello player. Nevertheless, she entertains herself by reading the files of the cases in which her father has worked. She gets interested for a man appearing in several cases: Frank Flannagan (Gary Cooper), American millionaire and womanizer.

Ariane finds out that a jealous husband has the intention to kill Flannagan. With a very unconventional technique, she saves Flannagan, but becomes another of his victims. Ariane is in love. Or maybe it's Flannagan a victim of hers? After all, Ariane has a mysterious behavior and lies, saying that many men have passed through her life. Not Flannagan nor Ariane wanted to fall in love with each other. But this is exactly what happens.

It’s very hard to point out which film by director and screenwriter Billy Wilder has the biggest number of sexual innuendos that passed easily through the Hays Code’s offices. “Irma La Douce” (1963) and “Kiss Me, Stupid” (1964) are strong contender, but “Love in the Afternoon” also surprises us, especially during the first half hour. The insinuations remind us of Ernst Lubitsch’s films, but they couldn’t please everyone: the movie flopped in the US, but was a success in Europe.

Many filmgoers were bothered by the age difference between Audrey and Gary, who were 28 years apart! The role of Flannagan was offered to Cary Grant, 25 years older than Audrey, but he refused the role. Although he was in the end of his career, Cooper still has an unmistakable charm, and he’s wisely filmed in black and white, because it’s certain that a in color film he would look his age. It’s not unbelievable that Ariane or any other young lady would fall in love with him.

Audrey, as a French, is more adorable than ever (and I particularly Love her hair in this movie). She brings purity to the character, and that’s something missing from the original German version from 1931, called simply “Ariane”.

Shot in location in Paris (see how beautiful the Ritz Hotel is!), daring in its dialogue and with a great soundtrack (because a group of gypsies make any date more romantic, right?), “Love in the Afternoon” will make you sigh.
