Like any big city, New York is a city of contrasts. The rich and the poor coexist, sometimes in the same neighborhood. It’s in one of those neighborhoods that the film “Dead End” is set. And, thanks to its brilliant art direction, we really feel we’re in this place of contrasts with the characters.

From her window at a tenement, Drina (Sylvia Sidney) can see the house where Kay Burton (Wendy Barrie) lives. Kay is seeing Drina’s childhood friend Dave (Joel McCrea), an architect seeking a job. Contamined by Kay’s values, Dave wants to put the tenement on the ground and build decent houses for decent people. Drina, who likes Dave, is heartbroken by his plan.

Hanging around the tenement there are two guys and one of them says his name is Johnson (Humphrey Bogart). He actually grew up there but was sent to reform school as a teenager – after all, he already killed eight men! He is looking for an old girlfriend, Francey (Claire Trevor), a meeting that won’t happen as he expected.

More than Drina and Dave, the movie is about a gang of boys who live in the tenement, whose leader is Drina’s younger brother Tommy (Billy Halop). She says the boys are no good, and she means it. Tommy gets in trouble when the gang picks on and beats the rich boy Philip (Charles Peck), who is the nephew of a judge.

The boys from the gang are played by a group of young performers who became known as “the Dead End Kids”. They came from the toughest New York neighborhood and appeared on the stage production of “Dead End”, then this film, then again on screen with “Angels with Dirty Faces” (1938) – curiously, another film with Humphrey Bogart in a secondary and heavy role. Samuel Goldwyn had the idea to bring the boys from the theater to the studio, but regretted as they ran mischievously through the place. The original sextet made three films together and split to have solo careers.

Humphrey Bogart is only third billed, but he receives a decent amount of screen time. His conversation with his bittered mother, who he hadn’t seen in ten years, is poignant. He had a big hit in the previous year’s “The Petrified Forest” and was gaining recognition as the great actor he was. He wasn’t, however, the first choice for the role he played in “Dead End”: producer Samuel Goldwyn wanted James Cagney cast instead, and Bogart was only chosen when George Raft declined the role.

Although he would see more success in the 1950s, William Wyler’s first credit as a director is from a 1925 short. Born in 1902 in what was back then the German Empire, Wyler was the cousin of Carl Laemmle, head of the Universal Studios, who hired him to work in film in 1921, first moving props around, then as first assistant editor. When he made “Dead End” Wyler had already been nominated for his first Best Director Oscar, for “Dodsworth” (1936).

The screenplay was written by Lillian Hellman, based on a popular play. Lillian herself was a successful playwright, with Broadway hits such as “The Children’s Hour”, “The Little Foxes” and “Watch on the Rhine”, all of which were adapted to the screen later. She was nominated for two Oscars and was blacklisted in the 1950s when she refused to answer the questions of the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

The great cinematography is by Gregg Toland, who is better known for his revolutionary job in “Citizen Kane” (1941). By the mood created by Toland’s camera, “Dead End” could even be labeled as a proto-noir or a late entry in the gangster movie genre that was so common in the early 1930s. William Wyler and Gregg Toland worked in six films together and could have collaborated more if it wasn’t for Toland’s premature death in 1948.

“Dead End” was nominated for four Oscars: Best Picture, Cinematography, Art Direction and Supporting Actress for Claire Trevor, who has only five minutes of screen time and whose disease couldn’t be said out loud because, you know, of the Hays Code. The performances of the whole cast are great, but the film is actually a feast for the eyes, as it reconstructs in a Hollywood studio the microcosmos of one of so many New York neighborhoods.

Some old Hollywood stars are so iconic that it’s difficult for us to imagine them as they were when they weren’t yet stars. Take Humphrey Bogart, for instance. The most iconic classic film star, according to an American Film Institute (AFI) list, started appearing in films in 1928 but it wasn’t until 1941 that he became a superstar. Today we talk about his last film before this change of status.

Roy Earle (Humphrey Bogart) has been freed after eight years in prison. He has been pardoned but he won’t stay away from crime for too long. He quickly goes to a camping site where two fellows are waiting for him to start a scheme. Together with those fellows is Marie Garson (Ida Lupino), who falls for Roy. The plan is to rob a touristic resort in California.

On the road, Roy meets Pa (Henry Travers), Ma (Elisabeth Risdon) and their granddaughter Velma (Joan Leslie). They all become friends and Roy arranges for Velma to undergo a surgery on her foot that will make her limp go away. Roy falls in love with Velma, even though he seems too old for her. Joan Leslie was 25 years younger than Bogart, and it shows on screen.

The climax happens in the Rocky Mountains of California. Director Raoul Walsh said that the climatic chase was the longest sequence he ever directed. The sequence was shot at Mount Whitney, California, where the maximum height is 14,505 feet - more than 4,200 meters!

Algernon is the only black character in the film, and also the comic relief. He crosses his eyes and talks in a melodic gibberish, being a perfect walking stereotype. Algernon is played by Willie Best, who has here his best remembered role. Willie had been a chauffeur and, visiting California with his employers, decided to stay and pursue a career in show business. Bob Hope said Willie Best was one of the most talented actors he had ever worked with.

Ida Lupino is first billed - her name comes even before Bogart’s. In “High Sierra”, her character is less of a femme fatale than of a gun moll - that is, the gangster’s girl. She’s an accomplice in the robbery; she’s also a crook, but we feel sympathy for her. Bogart was said to be unhappy about receiving second billing, and indeed “High Sierra” was the last film in which he wasn’t first billed.

The role of Roy Earle was supposed to go either to Paul Muni or George Raft. Muni left Warner Brothers and Raft turned down the role. James Cagney also turned down the role and Edward G. Robinson was briefly considered. Bogart, who had been sending several telegrams to the studio head requesting the role, had his effort pay off and was cast as Roy, something that changed his career forever. John Huston said about how Bogie approached the role: “Bogie was a medium-sized man, not particularly impressive off-screen, but something happened when he was playing the right part. Those lights and shadows composed themselves into another, nobler personality: heroic, as in 'High Sierra'. I swear the camera has a way of looking into a person and perceiving things that the naked eye doesn't register."

The screenplay was written by W.R. Burnett and John Huston, based on a novel by Burnett. The first version of the screenplay was written solely by Huston, but Paul Muni, who was set to star in the film at that point, disliked the screenplay, so the studio brought the author of the book to co-write a second version, that was also disapproved by Muni. John Huston, before becoming a director, had already traveled through the USA and Europe, and tried painting and newspaper reporting before dedicating his efforts to cinema, where he worked as actor, screenwriter, producer and director.

The director of “High Sierra” is Raoul Walsh. Some may say that Walsh’s heroes are egoist non-conformists, and that’s true. Walsh’s most famous movie is “White Heat” (1949), and James Cagney’s character in this movie falls indeed in this description. Apart from crime films, Walsh directed “The Thief of Bagdad” (1924) with Douglas Fairbanks and 140 other titles, in a career that lasted from 1913 to 1964. Interesting tidbit: Raoul Walsh lost an eye in an car accident with a jackrabbit, and in “High Sierra” a jackrabbit almost causes a car accident.

Like a gangster movie but with some film noir characteristics, “High Sierra” didn’t disappoint. Come for Humphrey Bogart, stay for Ida Lupino and you’ll be in for a treat.

Anjos de Cara Suja (1938) / Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)

It's from a young age that we start molding our future. Friends Jerry and Rocky learn this the hard way. After robbing fountain pens from a train, only Rocky gets caught, and he tells Jerry to not tell anything and just move on with his life. Rocky is sent to a juvenile delinquents' detention center, and Jerry moves on. Since the detention doesn't help anyone – hey, we've seen this in “I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang” – Rocky only graduates to more serious crimes and longer times in jail. Soon, 15 years have passed.

Rocky Sullivan (James Cagney) is finally free after 15 years. His first step once out of prison is to look for his friend Jerry (Pat O'Brien) who got truly reformed and is now a priest at their local church on the neighborhood they grew up in. Rocky, however, is not out of the crime world, as he has a “partnership” with his lawyer James Frazier (Humphrey Bogart).

Rocky's charisma attracts the next generation of juvenile delinquents, a group of “dead end” kids commanded by Soapy (Billy Halop). Rocky is able to convince the kids to practice sports in Father Jerry's gym and at the same time also gives the kids stolen money in exchange of a favor. Seeing his bad influence in the kids, Father Jerry starts a crusade against the mobsters of the town – Rocky included.

When someone tries to dismantle the mob, all they can find is corruption, everywhere, even coming from the ones who should obey the law and keep the order. Father Jerry then realizes that the gangsters are the ones who control the town, and their parallel power is stronger because they bribe and, more often, intimidate the police. This is a realization that could be made by many people seeking justice even today.

The actor who plays the young Rocky, Frankie Burke, has remarkable physical and vocal similarities with James Cagney – I mean, close your eyes and you'll realize their voices are almost equal. Another player to take notice is Ann Sheridan, who plays Laury Martin, Rocky’s love interest – although he is more interested in crime than in love. Ann reminded me of a young, pre-femme fatale Rita Hayworth, and it’s a shame Ann is so little remembered – Cagney called her “a mighty nice gal, Annie”.

The “dead end kids” were a group of young boys who starred in a play called “Dead End” and in the film adaptation of the same name in 1937. Those young boys were really from the New York tough neighborhoods – just like Cagney – and often caused trouble on the set – but not with Cagney, who proved to be tougher than them. The original sextet did three movies together, and with time and with several formations, the group went on with film series such as Little Tough Guys, the East Side Kids and the Bowery Boys. In this time, some boys went solo and others retired from the screen.

In his autobiography “Cagney by Cagney”, James Cagney calls his friend and co-star Pat O’Brien “remarkable in more than one way”, describing how Pat was always cheerful, optimistic and full of energy to work. In the book Cagney also says that the script was kind of bad, which led to him and O’Brien improvising as the Jewish writers knew nothing about the rituals of the Catholic Church. Furthermore, Cagney says that he modeled Rocky over a fellow he used to know in his youth in New York, a pimp who greeted people the way Cagney does in the picture.

Another film in which two childhood friends follow very different paths in life is “Manhattan Melodrama”, from 1934. On this film, Blackie Gallagher (Clark Gable) turns into a gangster, and his childhood friend Jim Wade (William Powell) becomes an attorney. They fall in love for the same woman, Eleanor, played by Myrna Loy. In “Angels with Dirty Faces”, what makes the friends closer and later push them apart is how they handle the dead end boys.

Angels with Dirty Faces” ends with a doubt that is still debated by classic film fans – I particularly believe Rocky only pretended to be scared to satisfy his friend. Moreover, the movie brought one of the most iconic and mimicked Cagney performances. According to Wikipedia, it was the 9th highest grossing film of 1938. According to the website Ultimate Movie Ranings, it was the fifth. No matter the position in the ranking, “Angel with Dirty Faces” was a popular film that remained in the public's memory for decades and is still interesting when watched today.

This is my contribution to the Made in 1938 blogathon, hosted by Robin and Crystal at Pop Culture Reverie and In the Good Old Days of Classic Hollywood.

A Floresta Petrificada (1936) / The Petrified Forest (1936)

Vejamos: “Beija-me, Idiota” (1964) é o primeiro que me vem à mente.

How many interesting movies start in a gas station / restaurant? Let’s see: “Kiss Me, Stupid” (1964) is the first I think about. Also “Out of the Past” (1947) and some other noir films. But how many great films are basically fully set in a gas station literally out of nowhere? “The Petrified Forest”, set in a gas station in the desert place of Black Mesa, Arizona, is the only one that comes to my mind.

Everything starts with the arrival of an odd man: Alan Squier (Leslie Howard, so slim and pale that he looks like Stan Laurel). Squier is a charming writer crossing the country after a divorce, and he instantly conquers the restaurant’s waitress, naïve dreamer Gabrielle Maple (Bette Davis).

But time has come to say goodbye. Alan gets a lift from the Chisholms (Genevieve Tobin and Paul Harvey) and their driver. When they are on the road the radio describes how runaway gangster Duke Mantee (Humphrey Bogart) looks like and which car he and his mates are using. On the next curve the Chisholms have a surprise: it’s Duke Mantee himself, who stops them and steals their car.

While the Chisholms try to fix Duke’s broken car to go on with their trip, a very nervous Alan walks back to the restaurant, knowing that Duke is about to hit the place. Duke does that. And so does Alan. Now, we have Gabrielle, Alan, the gas station employee Boze (Dick Foran) and Gabrielle’s grandfather (a very funny Charley Grapewin) held hostage by Duke and his evil crew. With all in the restaurant, they can only have deep conversations about life, love, money and existential doubts. And, yes, the Chisholms and the driver eventually arrive there, too.

Bette Davis’s main job in ‘The Petrified Forest” is to be adorable. Gabrielle is a sensitive girl who wants to visit her birthplace in France and loves to read poetry. Alan is a perfect match for her – even though Boze is insistent about seducing her. As Alan, Leslie Howard has to say beautiful, intellectual things that are provocative for us, viewers. Oh, and Genevieve Tobin has a FANTASTIC monologue.

Humphrey Bogart plays a heavy gangster with a tiny soft spot in his heart. In the first phase of his career, that goes from 1930 to 1941, he was mostly “undercast” by Warner Bros, who gave him small roles – he’s the fourth billed here – and roles of villains – he would play a Ku Klux Klan member in a 1937 movie. It’s interesting to notice, about Duke Mantee, this moment in particular, when the camera –because of a precisely planned shot by director Archie Mayo – captures the character’s soul:

“The Petrified Forest” was first presented as a play, with Howard, Davis and Bogart in the three main roles. When it acquired the play rights, Warner planned to cast Edward G. Robinson for the role of Duke, but Leslie Howard insisted on working with Bogart. Because of this support, Bogart was forever grateful to Howard, and even named his daughter Leslie after him. And Bogart had the chance to play Duke Mantee once more in 1955, in a TV adaptation, with Lauren Bacall as Gabrielle and Henry Fonda as Alan.

Without spoiling it, I can say that the film goes through a very unusual path thanks to Alan’s love for Gabrielle. And, if you presumed that a 1936 movie would bring a sexist, old-fashioned moral lesson about the reason behind a man’s or a woman’s existence, I must say: boy, you are wrong! Now go on and watch this wonderful movie.

The (many) stuff that dreams are made of

Sam Spade touches the infamous Maltese Falcon when he says the most important line in that 1941 movie that kick-started what we know now as film noir: “the stuff that dreams are made of”. He had just given in the woman he loves to the police because she had his partner killed, and is answering policeman Tom, who asked what that statuette was. Great description, isn't it?

The famous line was actually taken from William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. In the original, it sounded a bit more archaic: “we are such stuff as dreams are made on”. The line was updated in the film 330 years after the play was written.

Since the quote is used to encapsulate the statuette, it can be said that both have an important place in the imaginary and pop culture.

The statuette is the McGuffin of the film: if it didn't exist, there would be no film – and many characters would live happily ever after. The statuette is a small relique from the 16th century, given by the Knight Templars of Malta to King Charles V of Spain. The statuette was travelling by galley to reach the king when it was stolen by pirates and it remained unseen for centuries – until it entered the lives of Spade (Humphrey Bogart), Brigid O'Shaughnessy (Mary Astor), Joel Cairo (Peter Lorre), Kasper Gutman (Sydney Greenstreet) and many others (including, of course, our lives).

The 1941 film was the third telling of the story on the screen – there were also versions in 1931 and 1936 – and this is the definitive one. Following the book almost verbatim, the film was a success and remains as one of the most cherished movies of all time.

And there is no better compliment than parody. “The Maltese Falcon” was parodied in several occasions, including in episodes of cartoons such as “Animanics” and “The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries” - in an episode called “The Maltese Canary”!

With time, the quote became more famous than the statuette – and even the whole movie. While the film was constantly referred by name or with posters in other movies and TV shows of the past, nowadays we find more references to the quote than to anything else. It has already been said in the series “Castle” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, and also in videogames! In 2005, it was voted the 14th best know quote in film history by AFI.

In the recent past, “the stuff that dreams are made of” became the title of a Carly Simon song, of a weird comic book and of many blog posts, related or not to the 1941 film.

Furthermore, the quote has inspired many dedicated fans to make art based on it! It's not difficult to find drawings, diverse fan art and even wearables with the quote, like this lovely enamel pin by talented Kate Gabrielle:

If you really want to discover what is “the stuff that dreams are made of”, there is a price to pay: exactly 4,085,00 dollars. Yes, more than four million dollars! One of the two props actually used in the film was sold by this much in an auction in 2013 – where it was expected that the object would sell at only 1,5 million. Nothing bad, considering that this prop was responsible for injuring two of Bogart's toenails when it accidentally fell from Bogie's hands.

Thinking about all this, we can change the quote once more to use it to describe the cinematic medium, the one that brought immortality to Dashiell Hammet's story: without a doubt, cinema is a stuff made of dreams.
