É ótimo ver animações quando se é criança, mas é
uma experiência completamente diferente (e reveladora) revisitá-las quando você
é adulto. Embora minha memória não seja meu melhor atributo, lembro-me de ter
visto “A Espada era a Lei” na escola e provavelmente aquele não foi meu
primeiro contato com o filme.
It’s great to see animated features when you are a
kid, but it is a completely different (and revealing) experience to revisit
them when you are an adult. Even though I have a poor memory, I remember
watching “The Sword in the Stone” at school and that probably wasn’t my first
time seeing the film.
A história é do jovem Arthur, que um dia tira a
espada da pedra e cumpre uma profecia, tornando-se o rei da Inglaterra. Ora,
esta história poderia ser contada em menos de 15 minutos. Por isso o grande
destaque (e o verdadeiro protagonista do filme, diga-se de passagem) é o Mago
Merlin.
The film tells the story of young Arthur, Who takes
the sword off the stone and fulfills a prophecy, becoming this way the king of
England. Well, this story could be told in less than 15 minutes. That’s why the
outstanding character (and, let’s face, the real lead of the film) is Merlin
the Magician.
“A Espada era a Lei” pode ser visto como um bom
exemplo da jornada do herói. Esta é uma estrutura narrativa que vem desde a
Grécia Antiga, e pode ser resumida em um ciclo.
“The Sword in the Stone”
can be seen as a good example of the hero's journey (or monomyth). This is a
narrative structure that comes from Ancient Greece and can be explained by this
cycle:
Bem, nosso herói é Arthur (ou Wart). Merlin é o
seu mentor (e um dos melhores mentores de toda a história do cinema). Arthur é
o tipo de “pobre coitado” com quem é fácil de se identificar. Órfão, ele
precisa aguentar o padrasto, um cavaleiro que não acredita em mágica, e o irmão
Kay, o favorito, que está sendo treinado para participar de um grande torneio.
Well, our hero is Arthur
(or Wart). Merlin is his mentor (and one of THE greatest mentors in film).
Arthur is the kind of underdog with whom we can easily feel a connection. He is
an orphan who has to live with his foster father, a knight who doesn't believe
in magic, and his brother Kay, the favorite son, who is training to take part
in a big tournament.
Merlin chega abruptamente na vida de Arthur, e
promete ensiná-lo lições valiosas, junto com a coruja Arquimedes, que serve de
alívio cômico – e de voz da razão de vez em quando. Observe como a maioria das
cenas compostas ao redor de Merlin têm o azul como cor principal. A roupa de
Merlin é azul, e as paredes e louças da casa dele são de um tom mais escuro de
azul.
Merlin enters abruptly in
Arthur's life with the promise to teach him valuable lessons with the help of
Archimedes the owl, who is here for comic relief and a bit of reason. Pay
attention to how most of the scenes composed with Merlin in the center have the
color blue as the main color. Merlin's clothes are blue, and the walls and
dishes in his house are a darker blue.
Os testes de Arthur são criados pelo próprio
Merlin, que transforma a si mesmo e a seu pupilo em diversos animais. E é ótimo
que o filme foque no treinamento de Arthur, mostrando que a jornada é mais
importante que o objetivo final.
Arthur's tests are
created by Merlin, who transforms himself and his pupil into several animals.
And it is great that the film focuses on Arthur’s training, showing that the
journey is more important than the final goal.
O clímax do filme não é, de maneira alguma, a
retirada da espada da pedra. O clímax é a luta de poderes mágicos entre o Mago
Merlin e Madame Min, naquela que foi considerada a mais elaborada sequência de
animação feita na época. Mas este também foi o último trunfo animado de Walt
Disney – o filme de animação seguinte produzido pelos estúdios, “Mogli, o
menino lobo”, só estreou após a morte do fundador.
The climax of the film is
not the moment Arthur takes the sword off the stone – not at all! The climax is
the magic duel between Merlin and Mad Madam Min. This sequence was considered
the most elaborated ever done in an animated film to that date. But this was
also the last animated success Walt Disney saw – the following animated feature
made by the studios, “The Jungle Book”, was released after the founder's death.
A Disney fez muitos
outros filmes usando a narrativa da jornada do herói. Em muitos deles, como no
caso de Arthur, o herói só triunfa sem a ajuda do seu mentor. Mas isto não
significa que o mentor não é importante – muito pelo contrário: sem ele, a narrativa
sequer existiria. E é por isso que Merlin permanece como um dos personagens
mais icônicos e adorados do universo Disney.
Disney made many other
movies using the hero’s journey narrative. In many of them, like in Arthur’s
case, the hero only triumphs without the help of the mentor. But it doesn’t
mean that the mentor is not important – on the opposite: without him, the story
wouldn’t even exist. And that’s why that Merlin remains as one of the most iconic
and adored characters from the Disney universe.
