Santos Dumont vai ao cinema / Santos Dumont goes to the movies

First things first: here in Brazil we consider the Father of Aviation – aka the inventor of the airplane – to be Alberto Santos Dumont. Because he was Brazilian. And because of other causes: for instance, the French Aero Club, the most important flying institution in the early 20th century, only considered to be “flying machines” the objects that could take off on their own and were completely controlled by the pilot. The Wright brothers created a machine in 1903 that couldn’t take off on its own, so the French Aero Club considered Santos Dumont’s 14-Bis the first flying machine that was heavier than air. It’s worth noticing that Dumont’s machine flew, in 1906, further than the Wright brothers’ tool did three years before, and it was also quicker – three times the brothers’ speed.

Now that this tiny detail was clarified, I can tell more about Santos Dumont. Known in France as “petit Santos” (little Santos), Alberto Santos Dumont was a short man with big dreams. The son of an engineer, since his childhood Dumont showed that he was a curious fellow and an avid reader, being a huge fan of Jules Verne’s adventure books. Instead of taking care of the family’s business, Dumont was allowed by his father to study mechanics in Paris.

And it was in Paris that Dumont’s creativity flourished. Let’s remember that this was the Belle Époque, the time right before World War I when Paris was the center of the world, full of artists and inventors. Dumont was one of the latter kind. Inspired by Thomas Edison, he invented several things, including the wrist watch to keep track of how long his flights in dirigibles lasted. Yes, that’s true: if you have a wrist watch, you can thank Santos Dumont.

Dumont never patented any of his creations: he believed that knowledge should be public domain. He also showed his inventions in public and tested them, including the many flying machines he created, also in public, something the Wright brothers didn’t do. Failures happened constantly, but success eventually came.

O filme é intitutlado “Santos Dumont Explaining His Air Ship to the Hon. C.S. Rolls” (“Santos Dumont Explicando sua Máquina Voadora para o Honorável C.S. Rolls”).

And now we find the relationship between Santos Dumont and cinema – after all, this is a film blog, isn’t it? Dumont was filmed in 1901 by William K-L Dickson and the movie, that lasted less than one minute, was exhibited in the Palace Theatre in London. The movie is titled “Santos Dumont Explaining His Air Ship to the Hon. C.S. Rolls”. In it, Dumont simply shows some papers, notes, tools and drawings to Charles Rolls, who would, years later, create Rolls-Royce.

This little film was exhibited in 1901, when Dumont was in London to receive a homage at the British Aero Club for winning the Deutsch Award in Paris – that is, the award given to anyone who could use a flying machine to circumnavigate the Eiffel Tower. For more than one century, Dumont’s film was considered lost.

In 2002, researcher Carlos Adriano found in the Museum Paulista from the University of São Paulo a kinetoscope containing several images of the movie. From the images, the movie could basically be restored to its original form... and you can see it below:

This wasn’t the only time Santos Dumont appeared in a film. He and his inventions were constantly filmed for newsreels, for the Pathé company, or for the documental films by the Lumière brothers. The 14-Bis is usually considered the crowning jewel in Santos Dumont’s career, but in those newsreels he is celebrated by his many dirigibles and other airships.

Unfortunately, Dumont saw with horror that his invention became a killing machine in World War I and, what caused him more pain, in the 1932 Constitutional revolution in Brazil. Desolated, Santos Dumont committed suicide in 1932, days after his 59th birthday.

But Santos Dumont was never forgotten – not even by cinema. He was the subject of several documentaries over the years. In 2019 Santos Dumont’s life was told in the brilliant TV minisseries “Santos Dumont: Lighter than Air”, co-produced by HBO. More than the Father of Aviation and an ingenuous inventor, Santos Dumont, who never stopped dreaming, is an inspiration.

A Conquista da Beleza (1934) / Search for Beauty (1934)

Summer has always been synonyms of beauty and also with health. Many people start working out during the spring in order to have an ideal “summer body”. When we think about summer, we think about beautiful bodies on the beach, and also healthy, hydrated, sunbathed bodies. Beauty has always been displayed on cinema, but never so freely than in the pre-Code era. And there is a pre-Code film that brings together beauty and health: “Search for Beauty”, from 1934.

Larry Williams (Robert Armstrong) and Jean Strange (Gertrude Michael) are a couple of con artists who, teamed with Dan Healy (James Gleason), come up with the weirdest get-rich-quickly scheme ever: they buy a sports magazine and hire as editors two Olympic athletes, Don Jackson (Buster Crabbe) and Barbara Hilton (Ida Lupino). The minds behind the idea fill the magazine with salacious content – because sex sells, Larry says – and wait for the magazines to be bought by the people, who are more interested in sports because of the 1932 Olympics, held in Los Angeles.

Don Jackson sees that Larry is trying to build a “perfect girl” by editing several photos of different girls, literally building a Frankenstein with a beautiful piece from each girl. Don than suggests they do something else: why don’t they promote a contest to find the most beautiful, healthiest people in the planet?

Barbara starts to dislike the “real-life stories” that Larry has been publishing. Because of this, she and Don decide to give Larry creative control of the magazine, as long as he gives them the “Health Acres”, a huge farm that came in with the purchase of the magazine. There, they intend to create a Meca for health, with all the winners of the beauty contest as health instructors. Jean also splits with Larry and follows Don and Barbara to the farm, making Barbara jealous.

When the beautiful people reach Health Acres, there is a lovely, unexpected Busby Berkeley-inspired sequence to promote exercise as the way to stay healthy. However, the guests at Health Acres are more interested in partying than in sweating.

“Search for Beauty” was released in 1934, so it’s a late pre-Code, but it is the most pre-Code a film could be. The athletes are shot from their backs, naked in the shower, and early in the film Jean uses a binocular to take a look at Don’s legs and private parts. Larry says “there’s nothing wrong with sex, as long as it leads to... what it leads to” – an unthinkable line to be used under the Hays Code. There are women dancing in tiny clothes… and the film ends with the close-up of a butt.

Ida Lupino was only 16 when “Search for Beauty” premiered. This was her first Hollywood role – she had already appeared in seven movies in her native England – and it’s curious to see her so young and so blonde. Lupino was not happy about making “Search for Beauty”, as she was interested in more dramatic roles. Another pre-Code blonde who appears in the film is Toby Wing, playing Sally, Barbara’s cousin and the do-it-all secretary at the sports magazine.

We often think about Johnny Weissmuller when we talk about athletes who became actors, but Buster Crabbe was also an Olympic swimming champion before going to Hollywood. In fact, Buster Crabbe also played Tarzan, yet only once: in the 1933 serial “Tarzan the Fearless”. He also played Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, and was actually good friends with Weissmuller.

In the beginning of the film, a title card says that the film presented the 30 winners in the International Beauty Contest – an “international” contest held only with people from England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and the US. Before the ballet sequence, Don clarifies that the beautiful people were chosen from the US and the British Empire – but there are no black people, no people of Asian descent nor Native Americans among the most beautiful. Of course it must have been fun for the contest winners to see themselves on the screen, but right now, when we ask for more diversity on screen, the film is a bit disappointing. One curiosity worth mentioning is that one of the winners, seen below, is none other than future star Ann Sheridan.

On the beach, summer is the time when beautiful bodies parade – that is, skinny bodies in bathing suits. Commercials for beers are full of skinny women and strong men, advertising the beverage and the sun. Luckily, things have changed in the past few years, with a movement for broader body acceptance: now everybody can parade their beautiful bodies during summer - because all bodies are beautiful. How about you: are you ready for summer?

Quatro filmes noir que eu amo / Four favorite noirs

Feliz Dia do Cinema Clássico!

Happy National Classic Movie Day! Rick from the blog Classic Film & TV Café loves to give us, bloggers, a challenge to celebrate this day. This year he asked us for our four favorite noirs... wait, only four? Yes, only four, and “favorites” is a way of saying. He asked us to highlight four noirs that we like, or we think are underseen, or are worth watching several times... You get it. So here they are, the four noirs I want to highlight:

Lady from Shanghai (1947): Not only one of my favorite noirs, also one of my favorite movies ever. Beautifully shot, it tells the ill-fated story of Michael O’Hara (Orson Welles, who also directed and produced the film and wrote the screenplay), hired by a lawyer with a limp, Arthur Bannister (Everett Sloane). Michael becomes involved with Bannister’s wife Elsa (Rita Hayworth, divorcing Welles at the time) and…well, there’s blood. I love the bit about the Brazilians sharks seen in the city of Fortaleza by a younger Michael, and also the climax in a room full of mirrors. Read more about “The Lady from Shanghai” HERE.

Reign of Terror (1949): Film noir is part of History, but this one is more historic than most. Set in the 1790s, the time of the Reign of Terror in the French Revolution, it is also known by the title “The Black Book”. That book is where all the names of the “enemies of France” are written, a book that needs to be recovered by Robespierre (played by Richard Basehart). If Robespierre gets the book, he will have everything needed to become a dictator, so a resistance network is formed all over France, and among the members of this network we have Madelon (Arlene Dahl). The use of shadows and the lighting are the highlights of this historical noir. Read more about “Reign of Terror aka The Black Book” HERE.

Na Senda do Crime (1954): This Brazilian noir is a mix of “The Asphalt Jungle” (1950) with “Force of Evil” (1948) – a film evoked in the tense climax. Translated as “Road to Crime”, it tells the story of bank clerk Sergio (Miro Cerni), who robs a mansion with three friends. Sergio puts the stolen money in an account that belongs to a girl who likes him, but at the same time Sergio goes out with a singer and decides it’s a good idea to give her a stolen jewel as a gift. Theater director Flaminio Bollini Cerri only made this movie in Brazil before going back to his native Italy.

Los Tallos Amargos (1956): This Argentinian noir teaches us that journalism can be deadly – but not like “Ace in the Hole” (1951). In “Los Tallos Amargos” (translated as “The Bitter Stems”), two men start a corrupt scheme by selling courses of journalism by mail. These two men are the disillusioned Alfredo (Carlos Cores) and the Greek expatriate Liudas (Vassili Lambrinos), both played by extremely popular actors of the time in Argentina. An uncommon noir, it has no femme fatales, but a poor devil as a lead – Alfredo – and a lot of paranoia and lies – and even a fantastic dream sequence! It’s a unique film, one that all lovers of film noir should watch. Read more about “Los Tallos Amargos” and also an Argentinian neo-noir HERE.

O Mordomo Trapaceiro (1967) / Fitzwilly (1967)

It was on Letterboxd that I saw that one of my friends had watched “Fitzwilly” (1967) - in that moment, I added the film to my watchlist, after all, it stars two actors I adore: Dick Van Dyke and Barbara Feldon. I don’t remember which friend had logged “Fitzwilly”, but I do remember well that, a few days after I added the film to my watchlist, my friend Paddy wrote about the movie in her blog Caftan Woman. I was sold, after all, Paddy had great taste and recommended only the best movies. This review is for Paddy.

Claude R. Fitzwilliam, better known as Fitzwilly (Dick Van Dyke) works as a butler for miss Victoria Woodworth (Edith Evans), or Miss Vicki, an eccentric old woman who is currently writing a dictionary for people who can’t spell – a dictionary with all the wrong ways to spell the words. For this endeavor she needs a secretary, and then enters Juliet Nowell (Barbara Feldon), a young student who is hired by Miss Vicki. From the beginning, Fitzwilly and Juliet don’t get along, but she is hired anyway.

The issue with Miss Vicki is that she used to be rich, but she isn’t anymore. But, to maintain her lifestyle and her constant donations to charity, her employees, commanded by Fitzwilly, are involved in a series of schemes. This makes Fitzwilly a different kind of Robin Hood: he steals from the filthy rich to give to someone who isn’t rich anymore – better yet: only insurance firms are harmed in the process! Juliet’s arrival, however, puts all the schemes in jeopardy.

With time, Juliet starts liking Fitzwilly, and this liking grows into admiration. She thinks Fitzwilly is too intelligent to be a butler, a profession that is not exciting enough in her opinion, and she decides to convince Fitzwilly to find a more suitable job. At the same time, Fitzwilly sees no other way out than making her quit her job as a secretary, as her interference with Miss Vicki’s businesses is becoming too big – for instance, she makes one of the employees, Albert (John McGiver), repent for taking part in the schemes.

Like me, you might know Barbara Feldon as Agent 99 from the TV series “Get Smart”. She was already playing the clever agent on TV – after all, “Get Smart” premiered in 1965 – and “Fitzwilly” was her first movie role. It’s not a challenging role, but Barbara looks cute and is a good down-to-Earth counterpoint to Van Dyke’s schemer.

Dick Van Dyke is excellent as the title character, but he wasn’t the first choice for the role. According to sources from the time, Alec Guinness and Cary Grant were considered for the main role before Van Dyke was cast. Guinness would have been quite an interesting choice, and Cary Grant would also be great in the role, considering his charisma and debonair screen persona.

Fitzwilly” was directed by Delbert Mann and produced by Walter Mirisch. Mann was the Oscar-winner director of “Marty” (1955), one of the tenderest Best Picture Oscar winners and the shortest film to date to win in the main category – and also Mann’s first film as a director. Walter Mirisch, together with his brothers Marvin and Harold, produced many varied films, such as “Some Like It Hot” (1959), “West Side Story” (1961) and “In the Heat of the Night” (1967). Although the 1960s were his golden years as producer, Walter is still working at age 100.

I was surprised to learn – through Paddy’s review – that the soundtrack for “Fitzwilly” was composed by none other than the great John Williams, then in the very beginning of his career. He is even credited as “Johnny” Williams! In the very beginning of the film, the music is more solemn, then it becomes more playful as we watch Fitzwilly’s schemes and root for him, and finally, in their final caper, the music becomes triumphant. There is also a song composed by Williams, “Make me Rainbows”, with lyrics by Marilyn and Alan Bergman, that is heard briefly.

Fitzwilly” is a MGM movie that looks like a Disney movie from the 1960s, because of the light, family-friendly theme, and mainly because of Dick Van Dyke’s presence. It’s a quite funny movie, although predictable. Set during Christmastime, the movie is a good choice to watch during the holidays and a film I really enjoyed watching. Thanks for another recommendation, Paddy.
