Lost in Translation: Odd classic film titles in Portuguese – Western edition

This month of March, a sad thing happened in the classic film blogging community. Our friend Patricia Nolan-Hall, from the blog Caftan Woman, passed away. Paddy, as she was called by us friends, was truly everybody’s friend. She managed to read and comment in basically every single blog post we all published, especially when the post was tied to a blogathon. More than once, I believed that nobody would read one of my posts and BAM, there it was Paddy’s comment letting me know that I wasn’t alone and my work was being read. Paddy made the online film community – and the internet – a better place, and from now on, I’ll always have her in mind when writing for my blog.

Paddy loved many movie genres, but the western is one I associate the most with her. So here it is my tribute for her: some oddly titled westerns in Brazil. I’m sure she would get a kick out of these titles. I hope you do too.

“Stagecoach” (1939) became “In the Time of Stagecoaches” (“No Tempo das Diligências”)

“The Ox-Bow Incident” (1943) received the title “Dead Consciences” (“Consciências Mortas”)

“My Darling Clementine” (1946) is here “Passion of the Strong” (“Paixão dos Fortes”)

“Fort Apache” (1948) became “Blood of Heroes” (“Sangue de Heróis”)

“3 Godfathers” (1948) received the title “Heaven has Sent Someone” (“O Céu Mandou Alguém”)

“She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” (1949) became “Invincible Legion” (“Legião Invencível”)

“The Gunfighter” (1950) is “The Killer” (“O Matador”)

“High Noon” (1952) became “To Kill or to Die” (“Matar ou Morrer”)

One of my favorites: “Shane” (1953) is called “The Brutes Also Love” (“Os Brutos Também Amam”)

“The Searchers” (1956) has the title “Trails of Hate” (“Rastros de Ódio”)

“3:10 to Yuma” (1957) became “Dashing and Bloodthirsty” (“Galante e Sanguinário”)

“The Big Country” (1958) is here “From the Earth Men are Born” (“Da Terra Nascem os Homens”)

“The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” (1962) received the title “The Man Who Killed the Scoundrel” (“O Homem que Matou o Facínora”)

Desenho Retrô: Plic, Ploc e Chuvisco

Retro Cartoon: Pixie and Dixie and Mr Jinks

When we talk about the most famous duo created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, we instantly think about Tom and Jerry, even though there are other famous duos in their studio. The cat and mouse duo made their screen debut in 1940 and went on to even win a few Oscars! Nearly two decades later, Hanna and Barbera went back to the cat and mouse premise and introduced not another duo, but a trio: “meeces” Pixie and Dixie and the cat Mr Jinks.

Mr Jinks was an orange cat with a light blue bow tie. Pixie and Dixie were two gray mice, Pixie wearing also a blue bow tie and Dixie a red vest. The three often lived in the same house, not surrounded by humans, but sometimes we’re found in different scenarios, such as a ship.

Unlike in Tom and Jerry, in this cartoon the cat and the mice were quite friendly. Sure, Mr Jinks still chases Pixie and Dixie, often saying “I hate those meeces to pieces!”. But his goal is never to eliminate the two: in an episode, he thinks he killed Dixie and gets extremely disturbed, and in another episode he bans the mice to the North Pole and later takes them back home because without the mice his services wouldn’t be needed anymore.

Outros desenhos que eram parte do Show do Dom Pixote eram Zé Colmeia e, claro, Dom Pixote.

Their cartoon was part of The Huckleberry Hound Show and lasted four seasons, from 1958 to 1962. Each Pixie, Dixie and Mr Jinks cartoon was around seven minutes long, and the stories were quite simple. Other cartoons that were also part of The Huckleberry Hound Show were Yogi Bear and, of course, Huckleberry Hound. The characters also appeared in other Hanna-Barbera shows, such as Laff-A-Lympics.

Pixie and Dixie and Mr Jinks is currently shown in Brazil in the cable channel Tooncast. One episode that is often in the air is one of my favorites: “Jinks Junior”, from season one. In this episode, we are introduced to Mr Jinks’ son, a tiny orange cat with a stripped shirt. Mr Jinks wants to teach his kiddo how to hunt mice – even though he doesn’t know WHY cats must hunt mice, he just knows that nature is like this – and Pixie and Dixie even help Mr Jinks in this endeavor, hitting the cat so Jinks Junior gets mad at them and starts disliking mice. After this fun episode, Jinks Junior is never seen or mentioned again.

Pixie and Dixie and Mr Jinks were more peaceful than Tom and Jerry, and often more humorous too. Despite that, and despite their appearances in other shows like the current Hanna-Barbera resurrection Jellystone, the trio is rather forgotten today. We know, it’s difficult to compete with Tom and Jerry, but Pixie and Dixie and Mr Jinks deserve their place in the huge gallery of Hanna-Barbera characters.

Documentário: Buster Keaton, um Gênio Desajustado em Hollywood (2016)

Documentary: Buster Keaton, the Genius Destroyed by Hollywood (2016)

Buster Keaton is on vogue! Two books about the Great Stone Face were just released, and a biopic is in the works. But the Keaton renaissance has existed for a bunch of years now. Many books, documentaries and blog posts about Keaton have been produced and published / issued in the last few years. And Keaton’s fame has crossed borders! Of course it has, as you are now reading a blog post written by a Brazilian woman. In Europe Buster is popular too, and today’s object of discussion is a French documentary about Buster Keaton.

As the title reveals, this is a sad story. It’s the story of the fall of Buster Keaton. We, the fans, know it by heart: in 1928, Buster signed a contract with MGM and lost his creative freedom. Before we reach this point, however, the documentary talks briefly about Keaton’s childhood in vaudeville and his success in the 1920s.

Paraphrasing the documentary, Buster never laughed because he didn’t need to. His body language said everything that he wanted to be said. He knew how to fall - and how! - without being hurt. He was more than a stuntman: he was an acrobat. He experimented with cinema, an art still young in the 1920s, and was more than a great comedian: he was a genius filmmaker.

The documentary highlights Keaton’s love for trains, saying that it was as if cinema was, for him, a pretext for playing with trains. This obsession culminates in “The General” (1926), a film with, the documentary says, two symmetrical parts, like a full train trip. The efforts and the geniality in “The General” eclipse, even today, many of Keaton’s other masterpieces.

Keaton knew how to make us laugh, but also knew how to seduce. A sequence is dedicated to Keaton winning the girls not by showing his muscles, but by showcasing infinite tenderness. At this moment, the documentary talks about Keaton’s personal life, even showing footage from a magnificent Beverly Hills house that is supposed to be his. Also, for the first time ever, I hear that Buster had lovers.

We’re now 30 minutes into the documentary (that is 52 minutes long) when tragedy strikes. Joe Schenck, Keaton’s business partner and brother-in-law, advises him to sign with MGM, something Keaton doesn’t want to do at first. But Schenck insists and Buster makes the biggest mistake of his life – even going against the advice of his friend Charles Chaplin, who said (translated directly from the documentary in French): “They will devour you wanting to help you, they will twist your judgment, and you will die defending yourself and knowing you’re right. Not that they have bad elements, they have the best in the country, but they are too many and everyone will stick their fingers on your films, like many chefs in the same kitchen”.

MGM was established in 1924, with the fusion of Metro and Goldwyn Pictures, and the presence of producer Louis B. Mayer. Mayer believed that the fate of a film relied on the star first, the producer second, the script third and only then the director. For the first time ever, at MGM Keaton has to write down the script and submit it to dozens of brains who would heavily change it. And now his stunts are considered too dangerous to be made without a stunt double.

Nevertheless, Keaton finds a way to work as he was used to and makes “The Cameraman” (1928), a masterpiece – and something that would never happen again in MGM. The studio doesn’t allow Keaton to transform “Spite Marriage” (1929) in a talkie, but makes the actor appear as a ridiculous singer in “Free and Easy” (1930), a movie the documentary calls “an aberration”. Sound doesn’t kill Keaton’s career: the studio system does. Because we often talk about the great movies that were made with the studio system, when in reality we should be talking about the great movies made in spite of the studio system. Or as the documentary puts it: Hollywood is an ogre that devours its children.

In the early 1930s, Keaton is paired with comedian Jimmy Durante, forming a duo that the documentary describes as “incompatible”. Forced to appear in films that were not as big as his talent, Buster starts to drink. When he challenges Mayer and refuses to appear in promotional movies, Buster is fired from MGM. At forty, Buster is ridiculed, addicted and unemployed.

Oliver Hardy, Stan Laurel, Jimmy Durante, Buster

But things get better in an ironic way: back to MGM as a gag man, Buster falls in love with the dancer Eleanor Norris, who becomes his wife. The following years, he appears in movies, TV and commercials and even wins an honorary Oscar. The first Buster Keaton renaissance begins in the 1960s – just in time for Buster to witness it!

Besides the sequences from Keaton’s films, there is also in the documentary voiceover taken from his interviews. In these moments we learn more about Keaton’s life and creative process, and we can witness Keaton singing, celebrating his birthday, playing cards, signing autographs. These candid moments make the documentary better and more tender, and we feel closer to Buster.

The outstanding editing work was done by Véronique Lagoarde-Ségot, an expert in historical documentaries. This is another well-made tribute to the Great Stone Face we all love, and there is only one thing to say to those creating Buster Keaton content: keep them coming! It’s a pleasure to be alive during the Buster Keaton renaissance.

Investida de Bárbaros (1953) / The Charge at Feather River (1953)

Some movies are essential viewing because of their amazing plot, great acting, impressive special effects, glorious Technicolor, breathtaking CinemaScope, stereophonic sound. Others are essential because they brought something new to the history of film, breaking paradigms and defining genres and eras. Some movies are footnote movies: they are worth viewing if you’re a completist or just curious – for instance, the first movie of a big star. “The Charge at Feather River” (1953) is one of those footnote movies, one that interests us because it’s where the famous Wilhelm scream got its name.

After the Secession War, Fort Bello became a pacific place with rookies that are not very bright. The officer knows this and calls a former soldier, Miles Archer (Guy Madison), for a special mission: to command a regiment that will rescue two young women who were kidnapped by Indians many years before, when their family was decimated. At first reluctant, Miles accepts the job when he learns that the girls’ brother is his old friend Johnny (Ron Hagherty).

Among the men assembled by Miles there is sergeant Charlie Baker (Frank Lovejoy), who just caught his wife having tea – gasp! - with another man who will also be part of the mission, private Ryan (Steve Brodie). Everything seems already complicated enough, and it’ll get even more difficult because one of the kidnapped ladies, Jennie (Vera Miles), is fully adapted to life among the Cheyennes. When the ladies are taken, the Indians attack Fort Bello, and the regiment has to go on foot, carrying a wounded Johnny, to nearby Fort Darby.

With a plot very similar to “The Searchers”, “The Charge at Feather River” actually predates John Ford’s film by three years. It’s another western that paints Indians as the bad guys and white men as the saviors. For instance: right when the regiment enters Indian territory, they find an old Indian who is sick was left to die – one of the white men then says “no wonder why we call them savages”. It’s also implied that the Indians have raped the oldest of the sisters, Anne (Helen Westcott). For Jennie, the white girl who lives like an Indian and loves an Indian, there is no redemption: death is the only possible end for her.

The ladies have already been through the trauma of being kidnapped once – that is, if they were kidnapped at all and not simply rescued by the Cheyennes – and now they’ll have to go though this again – because what the white men do is another kidnapping. It’s not that they can’t go back: they don’t want to go back to living among the “civilization”… well, at least Jennie doesn’t want to.

As a curiosity, the title of the film in Brazil is “Barbarian Assault”. I wonder if the translator was referring to the Cheyennes or to the white men as “barbarians”. I’d like to think that the white men are the real barbarians here, as they invade Indian territory and start a true massacre.

At the 39 minute mark, the event we’ve all been looking forward to happens: private Wilhelm, the one in the checkered shirt, is hit by an arrow in his leg and screams. This wasn’t, however, the first time the sound effect was used – this title belongs to the Gary Cooper vehicle “Distant Drums” (1951), where the effect was recorded off-camera by voice actor Sheb Wooley. It was in 1977 when sound designer Ben Burtt named the sound effect after the unfortunate soldier. Back to “The Charge at the Feather River”, private Wilhelm is not seen again, but we believe he survived.

Besides the Wilhelm scream, there is something else to listen to: Max Steiner’s great score. Steiner had entered Hollywood in 1929 at RKO, where he stayed for eight years. In 1937, he went to Warner Bros, where he score about 140 movies. Max Steiner won three Oscars and his most famous score is for “Gone with the Wind” (1939).

Western fans will enjoy “The Charge at Feather River”. Released in theaters in 3D, the movie has good action scenes and one sequence, with Indian arrows flying from the screen, that would look fantastic in 3D. Yes, it is a footnote movie, a curiosity, but also a pleasant way to spend 95 minutes – if you don’t bother with the many prejudices that often appear in westerns.
