Manequim (1937) / Mannequin (1937)

Many years ago, I downloaded a bunch of Frank Borzage movies. One of the bulk was “Mannequin”, from 1937. I couldn’t watch it because my laptop broke and for a while I forgot about this film. When making my list of 2026 Resolutions, I decided to include it, after all, you can’t say no to a film with the  only collaboration between Joan Crawford and Spencer Tracy. I thought it would be, given the title, about the fashion world. But what I got instead was a romantic drama.

Jessie Cassidy (Joan Crawford) is a textile factory worker who lives with her ungrateful brother, lazy father and a mother who has trouble making ends meet. One night, she goes out with her beau Eddie (Alan Curtis) and decides not to return home and get married instead. The couple is celebrating their wedding at a restaurant when their paths cross with the boat entrepreneur John Hennessey (Spencer Tracy).

There is no honeymoon, but there are plenty of red flags. The morning after the wedding Eddie asks Jessie for money. She leaves the apartment and when she comes back she finds the owners taking it back for lack of payment of the rent. Eddie confesses he gambles. When he bets on horses and goes to jail, Jessie needs one hundred dollars to get him out. And for the money she goes after Hennessey.

Homeless and hopeless, after the show she worked on as a chorus girl closed, Jessie goes back to the Cassidy home, this time bringing along Eddie. Her new husband is so much like her lazy father that it hurts. Her Ma doesn’t want Jessie to make the same mistakes she did, and advises her daughter to always go after what she wants. And what does Eddie want? For Jessie to seduce Hennessey in search of more money!

When the subject is consent, the movie aged badly. Hennessey doesn’t accept the many “nos” Jessie says to him and we’re supposed to find it romantic. But she contradicts herself. After the fashion show - which justifies the title of the movie - she accepts going out with him.

In the beginning, Jessie sings her special song with Eddie and, surprisingly, it’s really Joan Crawford’s voice, per IMDb. The song, “Always and Always”, was nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar, the only Oscar nomination for the film.

Frank Borzage was a great director - in fact, he was the first recipient ever of the Best Director Oscar. He started as an actor, usually playing heavies. He directed his first film in 1913, but found the formula of success with romances in the following decade. This formula could be summoned in his quote: “Make the audience sentimental instead of the player. Make the audience act.”

The film is solid in its drama, but a simple conversation would have fixed everything and we’d have a short film, not a feature. But the audience liked it, so much that its box-office was three times its budget. As for fashion shows, it lacks in quantity and quality. Well, we’ll always have “Fashions of 1934”.

Adivinhe Quem vem para Jantar (1967) / Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967)

A hora finalmente chegou.

I was introduced to Sidney Poitier by my middle school grammar teacher, who showed “To Sir, With Love” (1968) for us in sixth grade. When I talked about seeing the movie, one of my mom’s friends confessed she was in love with Poitier because of two films: that one I’d just watched and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”. Some four years later I was introduced to the dynamic and romantic duo of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. I watched some of the nine films they made together, but it wasn’t time to watch their final collaboration. The time finally arrived.

Preconceito.

A man and a woman come off a plane, chatting with excitement and closeness. He’s black, she’s white. A taxi driver is surprised, as we in the audience also are, when they kiss in the back of the taxi, a scene seen by the rear mirror. He is doctor John Prentice (Sidney Poitier) and she is Joanna Drayton (Katharine Houghton, Hepburn’s real-life niece). They have known each other for only 10 days, but they are sure that they want to get married and live happily ever after. The obstacle? Prejudice.

There is no problem that John had been married and had a son, after all, wife and kid died in a train accident eight years before. John jokes that Joanna “can’t know when I’m blushing” and this is his way to joke about a serious issue. Joanna’s mother Christina (Katharine Hepburn) already showed surprise and disappointment in her look when she laid eyes on John. Her father Matt (Spencer Tracy) is also flabbergasted and decides to investigate Doctor Prentice. And they must be quick: John grabs a plane that night, and the following week he and Joanna will get married in Geneva. Will the Draytons give the couple their blessing?

The prejudice also comes from the Draytons’ maid, Tillie (Isabel Sanford). She is blunt and candid as she says that Joanna can’t marry John because he’s black. Joanna points out that Tillie is the same color as John, so why can she love Tillie and can’t love John? Sometimes racism is so internalized that black people talk and do racist things.

On the other hand, there are those who seem to be colorblind about the issue, like Joanna herself and a friend of the Draytons, Monsignor Ryan (Cecil Kellaway). He says he’s seen a good amount of interracial couples and they probably live better together because there is more effort, consideration and comprehension between them to make the marriage work out. The last Jim Crow segregation law had been overruled in 1965, and the curious case of the Loving couple had happened in 1958 and, as John’s father reminds him, interracial marriage by then was still illegal in 16 states.

In “Old Films, Young Eyes”, author Simone Elias transcribes a quote by her grandmother, who watched the film near its premiere: “At the time, it was thought to be a breakthrough, a real revolutionary movie, because of a white woman and a black man falling in love, forming a healthy relationship, and getting married.” These were revolutionary times: months before the premiere, interracial marriage was allowed in all states. It was a step towards progress.

Spencer Tracy - two Best Actor Oscars - and Sidney Poitier - one Best Actor Oscar - are billed first and second, and third comes Katharine Hepburn, who would win her second Oscar for this film, more than forty years after her first win. Poitier, Tracy and Hepburn were all nominated for Oscars for the film, but only she won - a win she deserved, as her expressive eyes could tell more than a long monologue. But it’s Tracy’s eyes that fill with water when she talks about the best time of their relationship - as you may know, Tracy and Hepburn were romantically involved for 25 years.

Director and producer Stanley Kramer was born in New York in 1913 and was Jewish - he knew a lot from his own experience about bigotry and discrimination. According to IMDb, he produced 35 titles from 1942 to 1979 and directed 19 films, being nominated for nine Oscars, but won only the Irving Thalberg Memorial Award in 1962. For “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”, both Kramer and Hepburn used their salaries as backing because Tracy was too sick while filming and the backing was necessary if he died before the filming was done. Tracy died 17 days after the shooting ended.

Without a doubt inspired by the 1967 film, in Brazil in 1973 premiered the film “Compasso de Espera”, in which Jorge, a writer and publicist, falls in love with Cristina, a model. He’s black, she’s white. In Brazil there is the myth of “racial democracy”, according to which there isn’t racism in the country, but the contrary is true. The couple, played by Zózimo Bulbul and Renée de Vielmond, faces backlash especially from strangers.

The parents-children relationship is a challenging one, in which both sides might face situations they never dreamed about - like the Draytons seeing their daughter falling in love with a black man. But the obstacles we face can teach us that we’re stronger than we thought. Like someone who discovers a new favorite ice cream flavor, we get used to new things.

Many professions have disappeared in the last century, in special because of technological changes. Among those professions, we have carriage conductors, switchboard operators, elevator operators, ice cutters and bowling alley pinsetters. “Desk Set” is a film about one of these vanished professions: our leading female quartet work in the reference department of a broadcasting company, researching info for people who call them with questions.

But the girls are about to become obsolete. Richard Sumner (Spencer Tracy) is an engineer hired by their company to install an “electronic brain” to replace the reference department. However, he can’t tell the truth about what he’s doing to the girls, and he must inquire the head of the reference department, Bunny Watson (Katharine Hepburn), about the work done there before the electronic brain is brought over.

Joan Blondell is back at playing the witty best girl friend, a character she excelled in playing in the early 1930s. As Bunny’s best friend, Peg Costello advises her to stop believing in her boyfriend’s empty promises. Bunny is in a complicated relationship with her boss, Mike Cutler (Gig Young), that has been on for seven years. Gig Young plays the second element of a romantic triangle here - or, as I like to call, he is the Ralph Bellamy of the 1950s and 60s.

This is the eighth of nine films Hepburn and Tracy together. “Desk Set” is a romantic comedy - many of their partnerships were comedies, like “Woman of the Year” (1942), “Adam’s Rib” (1949) and “Pat and Mike” (1952). Indeed, there are many humorous moments in the film, including the dinner at Bunny’s apartment and the Christmas party at the office. Hepburn and Tracy are delightful as well, and we can feel they were having a good time shooting the film.

The duo responsible for the screenplay is Phoebe and Henry Ephron, Nora Ephron’s parents. As a nice coincidence, Nora later wrote and directed “You’ve Got Mail” (1998), a film also about a woman who falls in love with a man whose work may leave her unemployed - in that case, Meg Ryan played the owner of a small bookstore and Tom Hanks the owner of a big branch of libraries. There is one more nice classic film connection here: “You’ve Got Mail” is a remake of the 1940 Ernst Lubitsch comedy “The Shop Around the Corner”.

"A Loja da Esquina / The Shop Around the Corner"
"Mensagem para Você / You've Got Mail"

As we can see in the movie, before the internet, people called reference departments whenever they wanted any information - for instance, the exact words of a poem or the names of Santa Claus’ reindeers - in special in broadcasting companies like the one in the film. It’s interesting to see that this department has only women working in - and Peg later says that there are only men in the legal department. Indeed, the girls at the reference department are librarians, and there are more female librarians than male ones: according to the US census, today 83% of librarians are female, and in the 1930s this percentage was much higher: a whopping 92%!

I’d love to work in the same reference department as Miss Watson, Miss Costello, Miss Saylor and Miss Blair. Being around books - being around knowledge! - all day long is exciting. Moreover, I excel at keeping useless information and weird trivia memorized. Maybe I could be an expert in classic film info, just like Miss Costello is an expert in baseball facts.

As Miss Warriner (Neva Patterson) arrives to install EMMARAC, the electronic brain, the girls from the reference department are kept there only to feed the brain with all the available information they have - and then they will be fired. EMMARAC was based on a real computer by IBM, and as all other primitive computers, it was very big, the size of a room. Now we have smartphones that are the size of our hands and are also more powerful than any primitive computer. But one thing remains: if the user can’t use the electronic brain properly - by asking the precise question to get a precise answer, and by interpreting this answer - the electronic brain is useless, even with all the information in the world.

Although it was received with moderate reviews in 1957, many people today consider “Desk Set” to be the funniest of the Hepburn / Tracy collaborations. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 100% rate of approval. There is no doubt the film stands the test of time, not only with atemporal humor, but also with a still relevant theme: man versus machine, the human heart versus the metallic brain. We’re still debating about what professions will become obsolete thanks to technology, and librarians are often cited in lists of professions doomed to disappear. As Katharine Hepburn shows in this movie - and, as a library science student, I agree - we’ll always need prepared human brains to handle information. No computer will know how to properly use and interpret information or, let’s say, write a movie review like this.

A Sétima Cruz (1944) / The Seventh Cross (1944)

ESTA CRÍTICA TEM SPOILERS

THIS ARTICLE HAS SPOILERS

The most violent, degrading and mortal war of them all started in 1939, but the horrors were already happening for years in Hitler’s land. The Nazis came to power in Germany in 1932, when they became the largest party in the Reichstag - the German Congress. The following year, 1933, the first concentration camp opened. Dachau served as a place to keep political prisoners before Jews were chosen as the main target for the Nazis’ hate. Even though concentration camps existed since the nineteenth century - when European colonizers built those camps in Africa to kill the locals - these places for extermination are often associated with World War II.

“The Seventh Cross” is the story of seven prisoners who, in 1936, escape from the fictional concentration camp of Westhofen. Among them there is George Heisler (Spencer Tracy), who wants to be reunited with his beloved girl, Leni (Kaaren Verne). Back at the camp, the commander orders the other prisoners to build seven crosses, where he intends to crucify each fugitive - after torturing them, of course.

Meanwhile, in the neighboring city of Mainz, a friend of George’s is worried about him. Franz Marnet (Herbert Rudley) looks for the leader of the Resistance in town, and together they get fake passports to give George - the only problem is that George believes Franz is in Berlin, and Franz has no idea where George could be hiding.

George finds Leni in Mainz - the same Leni who promised to wait for him forever is now married and threatens to tell her husband that she saw the fugitive. George can’t trust anybody anymore. He starts, like Blanche DuBois, depending on the kindness of strangers - first a dressmaker (Agnes Moorehead) who is friends with another fugitive, then a Jewish doctor who treats George’s wound and decides not to report him to authorities. Yes, there are oppressed people siding with the oppressors, but there may still be a few decent ones among the oppressed, who know what they’ve been through and won’t want the same fate to anybody.

Hysterical members of the Hitler Youth go through the village and invade houses looking for a fugitive. Watching a man being hunted by Nazis is like watching a sports event for these people. The people cheer and a man makes a joke when the fugitive - luckily, not our George - is arrested. In a Nazi reality, the best people are the indifferent ones: at least they don’t contribute to someone’s misery.

George has to look for Rudolf Schenck at 46 Morgenstrasse in Mainz. When he arrives at the address, a neighbor informs him, with a mocked smile, that Rudolf and his wife had been arrested by the Gestapo. This neighbor will certainly talk to the Gestapo about seeing George - there are no people worse than this neighbor kind, who can’t mind only their own business and feel pleasure in destroying others.

A disturbed George then looks for his old friend Paul Roeder (Hume Cronyn) and his wife Liesel (Jessica Tandy). Paul is a common citizen: he is happy that his wage increased and obeys the Führer when he says German families - only the Arian ones, obviously - must make babies. He’s worried about the ends, not the means. So what that the country is producing a lot of guns and minorities are being systematically erased? His life got better, and that’s all that seems to matter to him. Fortunately, Paul agrees to help his old friend - I may be a pessimist now, but I don’t see those ends-over-means people helping anyone.

Another friend of George’s, Bruno Sauer (George Macready), is at first too coward to help, but then redeems himself. Like many people, Bruno lives a comfortable life - his bathroom full of mirrors is almost a labyrinth- and compromises with the situation because he’s afraid to risk everything to do something right. George once again will have to rely on strangers, like factory work Fiedler (Paul Guilfoyle), baker Poldi Schlamm (Felix Bressart) and waitress Toni (Signe Hasso).

As much as George’s saga looks like a thriller, we are more disgusted and alarmed by the story: after all, it’s real, some people have been through hell after escaping a concentration camp, it is not an invented detective story. And the most awful thing in this whole tale is that you get so used with seeing evil that you start trusting nobody - I couldn’t trust any character at first, and because of these mistrust issues George’s situation gets harder.

The main characteristic of a concentration camp is that it’s not a prison: people don’t have to be found guilty of something to be imprisoned there - they just need to be found as dangerous or repulsive by those in power in order to be sent to a concentration camp. I don’t want to sound overly dramatic or alarmist, but all those things weren’t left in a somber past - they are happening again, now. Immigrants are being separated from their families in camps at the US border. People are cheering at someone’s disgrace. Empathy is becoming rare - because people who are not target of hate speech can’t put themselves in the places of people who are, therefore they do nothing against the hate speech. Hope is harder and harder to maintain - but “The Seventh Cross” shows us that one spark of hope is enough to start change. Or, as a girl wrote back then:

“It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.”
