O sobrenome não deixa mentir: Jack Pickford era parente de Mary Pickford - ele era irmão mais novo dela. Ele foi um ator de certa fama por algum tempo, até que uma tragédia aconteceu. Então ele entrou num vórtex de autodestruição e morreu muito jovem. Felizmente, alguns de seus filmes ainda existem, e neles podemos ver Jack em sua melhor forma. Isso acontece em “Tom Sawyer”, de 1917.

  

The last name doesn’t lie: Jack Pickford was related to Mary Pickford - he was her younger brother. He was an actor of some fame for a while, until tragedy struck him. Then he went on a vortex of self-destruction and died too young. Thankfully, some of his movies still exist, so we can see Jack in his best shape. This happens in 1917’s “Tom Sawyer”.

Tom Sawyer é amigo de Huckleberry Finn - ou vice-versa, se você preferir, pois “As Aventuras de Tom Sawyer” foi publicado oito anos antes de “Aventuras de Huckleberry Finn”. Tom Sawyer é um personagem que aparece em quatro livros de Mark Twain, e em mais três projetos inacabados do autor. Huckleberry Finn teve sua história adaptada para os cinemas mais de 20 vezes, mas aqui Tom Sawyer também antecede o amigo: em 1917 o filme “Tom Sawyer” estreou, com um protagonista que merece nossa atenção.  

Tom Sawyer is Huckleberry Finn’s pal - or the other way around, if you prefer, as “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” was published eight years before “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. Tom Sawyer was a character that appeared in four books by Mark Twain, plus three other unfinished projects by the author. Huckleberry Finn had his story adapted to the movies more than 20 times, but here Tom Sawyer also predates his friend: in 1917 the movie “Tom Sawyer” premiered, with a lead that is worth our attention.

Tom Sawyer (Jack Pickford) é um arruaceiro, mas não tão ruim quanto o excluído do vilarejo, Huckleberry Finn (Robert Gordon). Tom simplesmente não quer pintar de branco a cerca da tia Polly! O que ele realmente quer é impressionar a garota nova, Becky (Clara Horton). Sentindo-se maltratado em casa e na escola, ele, um amigo chamado Joe e Huck decidem viver como piratas de rio no Mississippi. 

Tom Sawyer (Jack Pickford) is a troublemaker, but not as bad as the village pariah, Huckleberry Finn (Robert Gordon). Tom simply doesn’t want to whitewash his Aunt Polly’s fence! What he really wants to do is to impress the new girl, Becky (Clara Horton). Feeling that he is treated unfairly at home and at school, he, a friend named Joe and Huck decide to live as river pirates down the Mississippi.

Um personagem importante, o escravo Jim, é visto brevemente e a cartela de texto com suas falas é escrita num inglês com muitos erros gramaticais. Jim é retratado, ainda que brevemente, como preguiçoso e pouco esperto. Nenhuma surpresa por aqui, considerando que era 1917, a escravidão havia sido abolida apenas 52 anos antes e ainda havia grand segregação racial.

An important character, the slave Jim, is seen just briefly and the title card with his lines is written in broken English. Jim is portrayed, no matter that it was briefly, as lazy and silly. No surprises here, considering it was 1917, slavery had been abolished a mere 52 years before and there was still strong racial segregation.

O roteiro foi escrito por Julia Crawford Ivers. Uma verdadeira pioneira do cinema, de acordo com o IMDb Julia escreveu 50 filmes, produziu seis e dirigiu quatro. Conhecida como “Mulher das Sombras” por causa de sua personalidade introvertida e por ser avessa à publicidade, Julia passou por todo tido de trabalho no estúdio Famous Players-Lasky, incluindo o de editora.

 

The screenplay was written by Julia Crawford Ivers. A true film pioneer, according to IMDb Julia wrote 50 movies, produced six and directed four. Known as “Lady of the Shadows” because of her introverted personality and dislike for publicity, Julia passed by all kinds of jobs at the Famous Players-Lasky studio, including editor.

O diretor foi William Desmond Taylor, que também dirigiu a sequência “Huck e Tom” (1918), filme cujo negativo ainda existe, mas que não circula. Sobre sua performance em “Tom Sawyer”, Jack declarou: “Eu sempre gostei dos escritos do Mark Twain e Tom é um dos meus favoritos - de alguma maneira parece que temos muito em comum. Ele fez várias das mesmas estripulias das quais eu me lembro da minha infância.” 

The director was William Desmond Taylor, who also directed the sequence “Huck and Tom” (1918), from which a copy is known to exist but it doesn’t circulate. About his performance in “Tom Sawyer”, Jack declared: "I've always been fond of Mark Twain's writings and Tom has long been a favorite of mine—somehow we seem to have a great deal in common. He performed so many of the very stunts that I remember in my own boyhood." 

Não creditada temos Olive Thomas como membro do coral da igreja. Olive, estrela de “The Flapper” de 1920, se casou com Jack Pickford em 1916 e morreu durante uma viagem a Paris, no que foi considerado envenenamento acidental. Ela tinha apenas 25 anos. 

Uncredited there is Olive Thomas as a choir member at church. Olive, the star of 1920’s “The Flapper”, married Jack Pickford in 1916 and died during a trip to Paris, from what was ruled as accidental poisoning. She was only 25.

Eu nunca havia visto Jack Pickford em ação antes, e para este artigo assisti a outros dois filmes dele, ambos de 1919, no auge de sua fama. Em “In Wrong”, Jack interpreta Johnny e Marguerite De La Motte, Millie, que é cortejada pelo gajo de Nova York Morgan Coleman (George Dromgold), o que deixa Johnny com ciúmes. Este filme tem, como em “Tom Sawyer”, como cenário um vilarejo no interior - mas o verdadeiro destaque foi um cachorro que mancava! Há uma sequência com Johnny se imaginando no futuro, com esposa e três filhos, que nos deixa tristes por saber que Jack Pickford não teve isso na vida.   

I had never seen Jack Pickford acting before, and for this post I watched two other of his movies, both from 1919, at the height of his fame. In “In Wrong”, Jack plays Johnny opposite Marguerite De La Motte’s Millie, who is courted by New York City chap Morgan Coleman (George Dromgold), making Johnny jealous. This film shares with “Tom Sawyer” the rural village setting - but the real highlight was the dog with a limp! There is a sequence with Johnny picturing himself in the future, with a wife and three kids, that makes us sad because we know that Jack Pickford couldn’t have this in his life.

Em “A Burglar by Proxy”, Jack é Jack Robin, que finge ter se machucado quando seu carro estourou o pneu. Ele é resgatado por um homem rico que tem uma filha, Dorothy (Gloria Hope). o Sr Graves (Bob Walker), prometido da moça, rouba do pai dela planos para uma invenção revolucionária e coloca a culpa em Robin. Acusado injustamente, Robin invade a casa de Graves e encontra um ladrão de verdade lá, Spider (o diretor John Francis Dillon). Eles enganam os policiais e de repente Robin tem de ficar na companhia de Spider. Este filme que se passa na cidade foi meu favorito dos três. 

In “A Burglar by Proxy”, Jack is Jack Robin, who pretends to be hurt when he gets a flat tire. He’s rescued by a wealthy man and his daughter, Dorothy (Gloria Hope). Mr Graves (Bob Walker), her betrothed, steals from her father plans for a revolutionary invention and blames Robin. Wrongly accused, Robin invades Graves’ house and finds a real burglar there, Spider (director John Francis Dillon). They deceive the cops and suddenly Robin is stuck with Spider. This film with an urban setting was my favorite among the three.

Jack Pickford foi um bem-sucedido ator e produtor - ele produziu tanto “In Wrong” quanto “A Burglar by Proxy” - mas nunca se recuperou da chocante e prematura morte de Olive Thomas. Ele teve a chance de co-dirigir filmes de sua irmã, mas a depressão e o abuso de substâncias tomaram conta. Numa carreira que durou 20 anos, Jack fez mais de 130 filmes. Mas foi um caso de partir cedo demais: em três de janeiro de 1933, Jack Pickford faleceu, aos 36 anos, no mesmíssimo hospital em Paris onde Olive Thomas tinha morrido em 1920. Sua morte chocou Hollywood, mas especialmente suas irmãs Mary  Lottie, que também fez filmes. Mas falaremos dela em outra ocasião.

Jack Pickford was a successful actor and producer - he produced both “In Wrong” and “A Burglar by Proxy” - but never recovered from Olive Thomas’ shocking early death. He was given the chance to co-direct his sister’s movies, but depression and substance abuse took over. In a career that lasted for 20 years, Jack appeared in more than 130 films. But he was a gone-too-soon case: on January 3rd 1933, Jack Pickford passed away, at age 36, in the very same hospital in Paris where Olive Thomas had died in 1920. His death shocked Hollywood, but especially his sisters Mary and Lottie, who also appeared on film. But we’ll talk about her on another occasion.

Considerada uma das mais belas mulheres de seu tempo, Olive Thomas ironizou, em um dos seus últimos filmes, uma moda que estava nascendo e governaria durante toda a década de 1920: a ousada e sensual “flapper”. Se tivesse vivido mais, é difícil de acreditar que a angelical moça aderisse ao estilo, mas certamente continuaria arrasando corações. Infelizmente, Olive Thomas faleceu de modo trágico em setembro de 1920, aos 25 anos.

Considered one of the most beautiful women of her time, Olive Thomas mocked, in one of her last movies, a fashion that was appearing and would dominated the bulk of the 1920s: the daring and sexy flapper. If she had lived longer, it would be hard to believe that the angel-faced girl would adhere to the fashion, but she certainly would have crushed many mofre hearts. Unfortunately, Olive Thomas passed away in a tragical way on September 1920, when she was only 25.

Genevieve King (Olive) é uma garota sonhadora que mora na pacata cidadezinha de Orange Springs. Ao ser vista passeando com seu vizinho Bill (Theodore Westman Jr), Genevieve é mandada pelo severo pai para um internato feminino perto de New York. Lá, ela continua sonhando em encontrar um príncipe encantado, e isso parace estar perto de acontecer, pois o charmoso Richard Chenning (William P. Carleton) cavalga todos os dias em frente à escola. Genevieve King (Olive) is a dreamer who lives in the peaceful town of Orange Springs. When she is seen hanging out with her neighbor Bill (Theodore Westman Jr), Genevieve is sent by her strict father to na all-female boarding house near New York City. There, she keeps dreaming about finding a Prince Charming, and this seems to be about to happen, because the charming Richard Chenning (William P. Carleton) passes by on his horse every day in front of the boarding house. Following her naïve dreams, Genevieve goes to balls, runs away from the owner of the boarding house and even gets involved with jewelry theft planned by her evil colleague Hortense (Katherine Johnston). Norma Shearer and her sister Athole have bit parts as students.

Ao voltar para casa nas férias, ela finge ter virado uma “flapper”, usando roupas elegantes e dizendo que seduzia vários homens na cidade grande. Seu estilo neste momento lembra vamps do cinema mudo, como Theda Bara ou Pola Negri. No entanto, essa parte é uma grande zombaria, pois Olive era muito mais parecida com as virginais Mary Pickford e Lillian Gish.

Coming back home on vacation, she pretends to have become a flapper, using fancy clothes and telling that she seduced many men in the big city. Her style then reminds us of silente film vamps such as Theda Bara and Pola Negri. However, this part is a huge mockery, because Olive looked much more like the virginal Mary Pickford and Lillian Gish.

Algo muito interessante neste filme são os seus intertítulos decorados. Eles não trazem apenas um diálogo ou o texto narrativo, mas também desenhos relacionados às situações na tela. Por isso vemos bonequinhos de chumbo, cavalinhos de brinquedo, túmulos à venda, corações palpitantes e garrafas de bebida em meio às frases.

Something very interesting in this film are the decorated title cards. They don’t bring only a dialogue or the narration, but also drawings related to the situations seen on screen. That’s why we see little dolls, toy horses, tombs for sale, pumping hearts and liquor bottles together with the text.

A experiência de ver essa película muda foi levada ao extremo, pois a versão a que eu assisti era realmente MUDA. Nenhum som se ouvia. Por isso eu coloquei para tocar várias músicas instrumentais que nem sempre combinavam com o que passava na tela. Porém, algumas músicas combinaram perfeitamente, como “Elizabethan Serenade” durante os esportes de inverno e “Pompa e Cirscunstância” durante o baile.

The experience of seeing this silent film was extreme, because the version I watched was indeed SILENT. Not a sound was heard. That’s why I put a playlist of instrumental songs that not always matched what was on screen. However, sometimes the match was perfect, like “Elizabethan Serenade” during the winter sports and “Pomp and Circumstance” during the ball.

Nascida Oliveretta Elaine Duffy em 1894 em Pittsburgh, Olive (apelido dado pela família) foi para New York depois do fracasso de seu primeiro casamento, aos 18 anos. Chegando à cidade grande, ela passou a trabalhar como vendedora e, em 1914, ganhou um concurso de garota mais bela e, a partir daí, posou para várias pinturas e capas de revista, até ser contratada para ser uma Ziegfeld Girl. Ela faria sua estreia no cinema em 1916, mesmo ano em que se casaria com Jack Pickford, irmão da estrela Mary.

Born Oliveretta Elaine Duffy in 1894 in Pittsburgh, Olive (a nickname given by her Family) went to New York following the failure of her first marriage when she was 18. Arriving in the big city, she worked as a sales girl and, in 1914, won a Most Beautiful Girl contest and, from then on, was a model for several paintings and magazine covers, until she was hired to be a Ziegfeld Girl. She would make her film debut in 1916, the same year she married Jack Pickford, Mary’s brother.

Depois da estreia de “The Flapper” e de finalizar “Everybody’s Sweetheart”, Olive partiu com Jack para uma segunda lua-de-mel em Paris. Depois de uma grande festa, Olive deciciu tomar um remédio para dormir e acabou ingerindo veneno, que a deixou cega e com as cordas vocais queimadas, matando-a cinco dias depois. Embora houvesse a hipótese de suicídio, a história mais aceita é a de que ela se confundiu com o rótulo em francês, tomando uma substância com mercúrio (HgCl₂).

After “The Flapper” premiered and she finished working in “Everybody’s Sweetheart”, Mary and Jack went on a second honeymoon to Paris. After partying hard, Olive decided to take sleeping pills but instead took poison, what left her blind and with her vocal chords burned, killing her five days later. Even though the hypothesis of suicide appeared, the most accepted story is that she mistook a label written in French, taking a substance with Mercury (HgCl₂).

O casamento com Jack nunca foi fácil. Os dois adoravam viver perigosamente e desfrutar das festas de alta sociedade. A família de Jack não aprovava o casamento, pois, segundo Mary Pickford, Olive era do mundo do teatro, de uma realidade diferente de quem estava no cinema. Apesar das brigas do casal, eles eram muito apaixonados e, em 1920, adotaram o sobrinho de Olive, após o menino ficar órfão. Depois da morte da esposa, Jack nunca mais foi o mesmo. Ele se entregou ao acoolismo, casou-se mais duas vezes e faleceu em 1933, aos 36 anos.

The marriage to Jack had never been na easy one. Both loved to live dangerously and go to high society parties. Jack’s family didn’t want the wedding because, according to Mary Pikford, Olive was from the theater scene, from a reality very different from people in the movies. Even though they fought constantly, they were very much in love and, in 1920, adopted Olive’s nephew when the boy became na orphan. After his wife passed away, Jack was never the same again. He started drinking more and more, got married twice and passed away in 1933, at age 36.

Com olhos violeta, cabelos castanhos e um rosto angelical, Olive fez 24 filmes em apenas quatro anos de carreira. A linda atriz, apesar de estar exagerando nas reações, parece mais glamourosa nas cenas vestida de “flapper”. Este filme foi feito pela companhia de Myron Selznick (irmão de David O.), onde também trabalhavam seus dois irmãos. Olive reclamava que não havia estereótipo que lhe servisse, pois estava entre a menina ingênua e a mulher sedutora. Apesar de sua beleza e de seu sucesso, a estrela hoje está um pouco esquecida, mas conseguiu provar, junto com Jean Harlow e James Dean, que não é preciso viver muito para escrever seu nome na história de Hollywood.

With violet eyes, light brown hair and an angel face, Olive made 24 films in only four years. The gorgeous actress, even though she exaggerates in her reactions, looks more glamourous when she is dressed as the flapper. This film was made by the company owned by Myron Selznick (David O.’s brother), where her two brothers also worked. Olive complained that there was no stereotype that suited her, because she was between the naïve girl and the seductive woman. Even though she was gorgeous and successful, the star is nowadays a bit forgotten, but could prove that, together with Jean Harlow and James Dean, that you don’t have to live a long life to write your name in Hollywood’s history.
