Estrada Proibida (1941) / Johnny Eager (1941)

By now you must be aware of the existence of femme fatales. These dangerous women exist to ruin a man’s life. But did you know that this concept can be gender-bent and result in the masculine version, the homme fatale? Looking at the cast list for “Johnny Eager”, one could expect Lana Turner to be the femme fatale making things difficult for Robert Taylor, but it’s actually the other way around!

Johnny Eager (Robert Taylor) is a taxi driver, and also an ex-convict currently on parole. But he lives a double life. For Mr Verne (Henry O’Neill), who manages his parole, he is Johnny, a family man living in the suburbs with his wife and adopted daughter Matilda. When he isn’t around Mr Verne, he is Eager, the dangerous manager of a track for racing dogs. The kind of life that wouldn’t be possible in the times of social media.

Lisbeth Bard (Lana Turner), who is visiting Mr Verne, becomes interested in Johnny. It’s sociological interest, nothing else. So Mr Verne, Lisbeth and a friend go visit Johnny in the suburbs and see his idyllic life far from trouble. That night, Lisbeth meets Johnny again at a club, when in his tough persona he invades a room and punches the club owner Tony. She then becomes even more interested in Johnny.

But there is another problem: Lisbeth’s father was the prosecutor who helped send Johnny to jail. Animosity is a nickname for what exists between the two men. Nevertheless, Johnny and Lisbeth start a relationship.

As Johnny’s henchman Jeff we have Van Heflin, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance. He entered the movie world encouraged by Katharine Hepburn, who worked alongside him on Broadway. He worked for several Hollywood studios, including RKO, Warner and MGM, and did a few films in Europe, too. His first film role came in 1936 and the last in 1970. We can find a queer undertone in Jeff and Johnny’s relationship, which makes “Johnny Eager” more remarkable.

“Johnny Eager” was directed by Mervin LeRoy. Born in San Francisco, he remembered vividly the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake, which served as inspiration years later when he directed “Quo Vadis?” (1951). But he had a very long career, starting as a Chaplin impersonator in the 1910s and going all the way to directing more than 70 titles, including 1930s classics such as “Little Caesar” (1931) and “Golddigers of 1933”. Another element from the 1930s in this movie is actress Glenda Farrell, who has a small role.

The bit with Johnny being a taxi driver made me think this movie would be somewhat similar to “High Sierra” (1941). There is a coincidence between the two, anyway: as Lana Turner was warming up as a star when this film was made, “High Sierra” was the last movie Humphrey Bogart did before becoming a superstar in “The Maltese Falcon” (1941).

“Johnny Eager” is a film full of surprises. We start with Johnny’s double life and just evolve from there. The film was a huge box-office hit for MGM and critics were pleased, too. It was a win-win situation, except, of course, for the doomed characters in this early noir.

This is my contribution to the Another Film Noir blogathon, hosted by Rachel and Quiggy at Hamlette’s Soliloquy and The Midnite Drive-In.
