Five Stars blogathon - My Top 5 classic film stars

Happy National Classic Movie Day!

As dúvidas! As ponderações! As noites em claro fazendo esta lista!

For this year's celebration, Rick at the Classic Film and TV Café asked us a nearly impossible thing: to name our five favorite classic film stars. Oh, the excruciating pain that this task made me go through! The doubts! The regrets! The pondering! The nights I couldn't sleep thinking about this list!

I ended up choosing the “first five”. Many others came and joined this group, and I'm always discovering new stars to add to my pantheon. But these will always have a special place in my heart. Maybe not because they are the best – and in my opinion they are – but because they were some of the first I came to know and love.

A lenda número 1 segundo a AFI.
Katharine Hepburn: The best actress of the classic film era. The one who got four Oscars. The number 1 AFI legend. I was impressed with all these accomplishments, then I started looking for her films. When I finally saw her onscreen, I knew every single title, award and honor was well deserved. Kate is a force of nature, a refined actress, one with huge acting range and someone who could play any part with perfection. And, oh, she is a really great role model as a smart and independent woman!
Greta Garbo: Já houve no mundo alguém tão bonito quanto Garbo?
Greta Garbo: Has there ever been someone as beautiful as Garbo on Earth? I don't think so. Since the beginning, I looked at her face as if I was looking into something ethereal, special, not from this world. She shone equally in silents and talkies, and I'm still left speechless with every single picture of her I see.
Jean Harlow: Like many people, I learned about Harlow's death before knowing about her life and career. The blonde goddess lived only 26 years, but her work is out there, forever, and never stops amazing me. I love her as a comedienne and as a femme fatale of sorts. Jean could do anything, with perfection.
James Cagney: Foi Harlow que me levou a Cagney.
James Cagney: Harlow was the one who led me to Cagney. I started watching their only film together, “Public Enemy” (1931) because of her, but in the end I was mesmerized with him. Cagney put love and energy in everything he did, and this makes him a great guy – and an even greater actor.
Chaney nunca me desapontou.
Lon Chaney: I was torn between Chaney and Keaton, but chose Chaney. I know Keaton is very popular among the classic film fandom, and I also love him to pieces. Actually, I think almost everything I'll say about Chaney also suits Keaton. He was versatile. He was bold. He was creative. Any movie is better with him. Chaney has never disappointed me.
This is my contribution to the Five Stars Blogathon, hosted by Rick at Classic Film and TV Café. Now it’s time to party!

I was delighted to see that you named two of my father's favorite stars: Jean Harlow and Lon Chaney. I think Jean Harlow was his first silver screen crush as a teenager...and I can see why. She was pretty, but there was also an incredible sexiness in the way she way she presented herself on screen. As for Lon Chaney, I think his ability to get inside his characters was even more impressive than his incredible make-up. Well done!

I am so happy that you included Jean Harlow!! She is my all-time favourite actress hands down. She was absolutely stunning, but her acting chops and range definitely cemented her legacy. The others you included are obviously all incredible as well :)

I love your list of 5 favourite stars. I understand your suffering through keeping the list to 5, but it was fun too, wasn't it?

Katharine Hepburn inspires awe.

Cagney inspires love.

Until I'm watching her, I have a tendency to forget how marvelous Greta Garbo truly is.

My daughter once said of Harlow "There's nobody like her today. That's a shame."

Lon Chaney speaks to me, no matter that his greatest work is encompassed in the silent era.

Excellent choices, Le! I'm glad you included Jean Harlow because, as you said, she really could do everything. I'm also glad you chose Lon Chaney. He didn't occur to be,, and he definitely deserves to be mentioned.

Great list! I liked that you included Lon Chaney--the horror genre and film makeup owe so, so much to him. He's truly unique. And James Cagney, too. Such a strong character he was.

Great choices! Your selections read like a list of actors that every non-classic film fan should be introduced to first. Katharine Hepburn's films are certainly must-see!

Hepburn would be on my list too.

Your choice of Chaney surprised me. He's obviously deserving, but I don't think he would be a common choice.

Love your choices. Narrowing it down to 5 is so hard, isn't it? We agree on Cagney, but I admit I toyed with Garbo and Harlow, too.

Amazing choices. I adore Garbo, but it can take me a while to watch her films -- they can be so heavy! And yay for Kate, of course! ;)

Love that you chose Harlow and Garbo! Didn't think of either of them, but they mesmerize me, and Harlow is so funny!

Love your choices - Katherine Hepburn is always fantastic, check out The Aviator about Howard Hughes with Leonardo Di Caprio, Hepburn is played by Cate Blanchett and its a great movie. Loved Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story one of my faves with Cary Grant xx

Great choices Le. I admire all of them, in fact I considered all of them for my blog too. They
were the great stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Wow!!! You've included the creme de la creme and the heart of old Hollywood in your picks with Kate, Garbo, Harlow, Cagney and the Man of 1000 Faces. I enjoyed your list and your reasons. Nicely done.
