Uma das melhores surpresas que tive vendo filmes e escrevendo no blog envolve o filme “A Mosca da Cabeça Branca”,de 1958. Tendo encontrado o filme por acaso na TV e ido ver sem expectativas, eu acabei embasbacada pelo suspense. Mais tarde, escrevi uma crítica sobre o filme para o blog, e o post se tornou um grande sucesso, recebendo dúzias de visitas semanalmente. E, como minha admiração por Jeff Goldblum e Geena Davis – protagonistas do remake de 1986 – só vem aumentando, percebi que era hora de ver o remake e comparar os dois filmes.

One of my best film / blogging surprises involves the 1958 film “The Fly”. Catching it on TV without any expectations, I was blown away by how suspenseful the film was. Later, I wrote about the film for my blog, and the post became a huge success, receiving dozens of views weekly. And, as my admiration for both Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis – the leads of the 1986 remake – grew, I knew it was time to see the remake and compare the two films.

No filme de 1958, Andre Delambre (David Hedison) é um cientista que vivia feliz com sua família – até que um dia ele decidiu testar sua máquina de teletransporte ele mesmo, sem saber que havia uma mosca dentro da máquina. Andre e a mosca se fundem, o que lhe causa horror.

In the 1958 film, Andre Delambre (David Hedison) is a scientist who lived happily with his family – until one day he decided to test his teleportation machine himself, not knowing that there was also a fly inside the machine. Andre and the fly morph, to his complete horror.

No filme de 1986, “A Mosca”, Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) é um cientista que mostra sua mais nova invenção, uma máquina de teletransporte, para a jornalista Veronia 'Ronnie' Quaife (Geena Davis”. Ronnie fica encantada com a experiência e fica interessada em fazer uma reportagem sobre a descoberta de Seth. Eles também começam a namorar. Um dia, Seth decide testar a máquina de teletransporte sozinho, sem saber que uma mosca também embarcou na experiência...

In the 1986 film, Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) is a scientist who shows his newest invention, a teleportation machine, to journalist Veronica ‘Ronnie’ Quaife (Geena Davis). Ronnie is amazed by the experience and gets interested in reporting about his discovery. They also start dating. One day, Seth decides to experiment the teleportation machine himself, without knowing that a fly also embarked in the experience…

A metamorfose de Andre é imediata. Nós não vemos muito do resultado, mas podemos imaginá-lo – e esta é a grande vantagem da versão de 1958. Ao “sugerir, e não mostrar”, o filme evita apelar para o grotesco – afinal, é um filme colorido, e tudo parece mais palpável e cores do que em preto e branco.

Andre’s metamorphosis is immediate. We don’t see much of the result, but we can imagine it – and this is the big advantage of the 1958 version. By using the “tell, do not show” approach, the film avoids being too disgusting – after all, it’s a color film, and everything looks more palpable in color than in black and white.

A metamorfose de Seth é gradual. À primeira vista parece que a experiência foi um sucesso, mas pouco a pouco Seth começa a mostrar mais “comportamentos de mosca” - como a vontade de comer açúcar, uma força incomum nos braços e o crescimento de pelos de inseto nas costas. O filme de 1986 não tem medo de nos causar nojo – e a metamorfose de Seth é puro nojo e alguns sustos.

Seth’s metamorphosis is gradual. At first it looks like the experiment was a success, but little by little Seth starts showing “fly behavior” – like the drive to eat sugar, an unlikely strength in his arms and the growth of insect hair on his back. The 1986 film is not afraid of disgusting us – and Seth’s metamorphosis is pure gore with a few jump scares.

Quando Andre se torna meio-mosca, ele implora para que sua esposa, Helene (Patricia Owens), mate-o – e ela o faz. Na verdade, toda a história é contada em flashback por Helene para um inspetor e para o irmão de Andre, François (Vincent Price). Andre é uma figura trágica, ao contrário de Seth no filme de 1986.

As Andre becomes half-fly, he begs his wife, Helene (Patricia Owens), to kill him – and she does it. In fact, the whole story is told in flashback by Helene to an inspector and also to Andre’s brother, François (Vincent Price). Andre is a tragic figure, unlike Seth in the 1986 film.

Conforme Seth vai se tornando mosca, ele se torna um vilão. Primeiro ele deseja que Ronnie o deixe, dizendo que ela não merece passar por aquilo com ele, mas mais tarde ele decide usá-la para tentar se tornar humano novamente. Seth também maltrata, diminui e trai Ronnie. No final, Seth é um monstro por dentro – mais mosca do que humano – e por fora, considerando como ele tratou Ronnie.

As Seth is becoming a fly, he becomes a villain. At first he wants Ronnie to leave him, saying she doesn’t deserve to go through it with him, but later he decides to use her to try to become human again. Seth also bullies, belittles and cheats on poor Ronnie. In the end, Seth is a monster on the outside – more fly than human – and on the inside, considering how he treated Ronnie.

De acordo com o IMDb, Jeff Goldblum enviou uma carta para Vincent Price quando o remake estreou. A carta dizia: “Espero que você goste do meu filme tanto quanto eu gostei do seu”. Emocionado, Vincent Price foi ao cinema ver a nova versão, e a descreveu como “maravilhosa até certo ponto... ela foi um pouco longe demais”. E Vincent estava certo!

According to IMDb, Jeff Goldblum sent a letter to Vinent Price when the remake was ready. The letter went like this: “I hope you like it as much as I liked yours”. Moved, Price went to the movies to watch the new version, and described it as “wonderful right up to a certain point… it went a little too far”.  And Mr. Price was so right!

David Cronenberg aposta no nojo e no susto para o filme de 1986, enquanto o original de 1958 depende do suspense para funcionar – e funciona bem. O romance também é muito importante no filme de 1986 e, embora Jeff Goldblum e Geena Davis fossem namorados na época, não vemos química entre eles. Seth Brundle, o cientista, está mais preocupado com a ciência do que com sua vida amorosa, e isso fica evidente.

David Cronenberg bets on the gore and the scary in the 1986 film, while the original 1958 production relies on suspense to work – and it works well. The romance is also very important in the 1986 film and, although Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis were dating at the time, we don’t feel their chemistry. Seth Brundle, the scientist, is more worried about his science than with his love life, and it shows.

A versão de 1958 sempre será minha favorita, e mesmo quem só assistiu ao remake deve procurar o original para experimentar outra visão da história, mais sutil e com mais suspense.

The 1958 version will forever be my favorite, and even those who only saw the remake should seek the original in order to experience another take on the tale, with more subtlety and suspense.

O veredicto: “A Mosca da Cabeça Branca”, de 1958, é o filme superior.

The verdict: the 1958 “The Fly” is the superior movie.

Antes de se tornar o rei dos filmes de terror na década de 1950, tendo como rival apenas Christopher Lee em sua parceria com Peter Cushing, Vincent Price foi coadjuvante em produções como “O Fio da Navalha” (1946) e “Os Três Mosqueteiros” (1948). Ninguém nessa época pensaria que aquele homem de voz imponente se tornaria um ícone do horror.

Before he became the king of terror in the 1950s, having as a rival only Christopher Lee in his partnership with Peter Cushing, Vincent Price was a supporting player in movies like “The Razor's Edge” (1946) and “The Three Musketeers” (1948). Nobody at that time would imagine that this man with an imponent voice would become a horror icon.

“A Mosca da Cabeça Branca” pode parecer, à primeira vista, apenas mais um filme de terror para impressionar multidões no Halloween, mas em poucos minutos ele se torna uma caixinha de surpresas. Primeiro, Vincent Price não é nenhuma criatura sobrenatural ou sequer o vilão da história: ele é um dos envolvidos, embora não diretamente, no drama que se desenrola quando sua cunhada Helene (Patricia Owens) é acusada de matar o marido Andre (David Hedison, aqui creditado como Al Hedison). A cabeça de Andre foi esmagada em uma das máquinas da fundição da família Delambre, e Helene tem um álibi simplesmente inacreditável: ela diz que o marido pediu que ela o matasse.

“The Fly” may look, at first, like any other horror film made to impress the crowds on Halloween, but in a few minutes it becomes a box full of surprises. First, because Vincent Price is no supernatural creature, not evn the villain: he is one of the people involved, although not directly, in the drama that begins when his sister-in-law Helene (Patricia Owens) is accused of killing her husband Andre (David Hedison, here credited as Al Hedison). Andre's head was smashed in one of the family's fundition machines, and Helene has an alibi that is hard to believe: she says her husband asked her to kill him.

Muitos problemas surgem, incluindo debates sobre o futuro do filho do casal, Philippe (Charles Herbert) e a sanidade mental de Helene, até que ela conta a François (Vincent Price) que uma das experiências do marido tivera consequências catastróficas. Andre inventou uma máquina de teletransporte e, depois de muitos testes, incluindo um no qual o pobre gato Dandelo ficou perdido para sempre no limbo, Andre decidiu que ele seria o próximo a ser teletransportado. A lot of problems arise, including debates about the future of the couple's son, Philippe (Charles Herbert) and Helene1s mental sanity, until the moment she tells François (Vincent Price) that one of her husband's inventions had catastrophic consequences. Andre invented a teletransportation machine and, after a lot of tests, including one in which the poor cat Dandelo was forever lost to limbo, Andre decided that he would be next to be teletransported. This would mean a huge scientific discovery if a nosy fly hadn't entered the machine with Andre: the atoms of their bodies, after being suspended for a few seconds, got mixed up. Andre ended up with the head and the arm of a fly.

Não há nada de terrivelmente assustador no filme, mas há suspense a todo momento. É impossível não ter compaixão por Helene, que todos consideram louca. Vários momentos são dignos de prender o fôlego, em especial quando Philippe caça uma mosca no quintal e depois conta que ela tinha uma cabeça branca. Começa assim a busca pela outra metade de Andre Delambre, que poderá ser perdida para sempre ou encontrada e exibida como uma aberração. A fotografia a cores mostra bem o contraste entre o laboratório escuro e sombrio, em especial depois do insucesso da experiência, com o resto da casa, clara e arejada. A beleza de Patricia Owens faz contraponto à destruição causada pelo terrível segredo que ela guarda e mesmo Hedison, um ator bonito, dispensou o dublê e se submeteu à pesada maquiagem e fantasia de mosca. Detalhe: o espanto de Helene, a esposa, é real, porque a atriz tinha medo de insetos e não lhe foi permitido ver a fantasia que Hedison usaria antes de rodar a cena.

There is nothing terribly scary in the film, but there is suspense all the time. We feel sorry for Helene, considered crazy by everybody. Several moments are breathtaking, in particular one: when Philippe hunts a fly in the backyard, and later syas it had a white head. This is the beginning of the search for Andre Delambre's other half, that can be lost forever or found and exhibited as a freak. The color photography is great to show the contrat between the dar and somber laboratory, in special after the experience fails, and the rest of the house, clear and full of life. Patricia Owens's beauty contrasts with the destruction caused by the terrible secret she keeps and even Hedison, a handsome actor, dispensed the work of a double and used himself the heavy make-up and fly costum. A detail: Helene's reaction is real, because Patricia Owens was afraid of insects and she wasn't allowed to see the custom Hedison would wear beforehand.

Quando chegou a hora de ver o contraponto do doutor, ou seja, a mosca com cabeça humana, uma miniatura animada foi usada. Isso acontece no clímax do filme e, apesar da seriedade que o momento exigia, Vincent Price e Herbert Marshall, que interpreta o inspetor Charas, sempre gargalhavam ao olhar para a miniatura. Ao pedir socorro, a pequena mosca gerou uma das mais poderosas frases do cinema de terror, mas ao mesmo tempo desagradou David Hedison. O protagonista ficou furioso ao perceber que sua voz havia sido modificada digitalmente para a cena. Mesmo com tantos detalhes curiosos, a cena é excelente. 

When time came for us all to see the doctor's counterpart, that is, the fly with the human head, an animated miniature was used. This happens in the climax of the film and, even though the moment was serious, Vincent Price and Herbert Marshall, who plays inspecto Charas, always laughed when they looked at the miniature. When it asks for help, the little fly generated one of the most powerful quotes of horror cinema, but it also made David Hedison bitter. The leading man got mad when he realized his voice had been digitally modified for the scene. Even with so many curious details, the scene is excellent.

O filme foi baseado em um conto publicado na revista Playboy em 1957, escrito por George Langelaan e adaptado para as telas pelo iniciante James Clavell, que mais tarde seria o roteirista e diretor de “Ao Mestre, Com Carinho / To Sir, With Love” (1968). O sucesso do filme de terror foi imediato, entretanto o diretor Kurt Neumann não viu a estreia de sua melhor criação, pois faleceu semanas antes. Duas sequências se seguiram: “O Monstro de Mil Olhos / Return of the Fly” (1959), novamente com Vincent Price, filmado em preto e branco e focando na jornada também destrutiva de Philippe Delambre, herdeiro da máquina e das ideias de teletransporte; e “A Maldição da Mosca / Curse of the Fly” (1965), com personagens diferentes do original. Um remake foi feito em 1986, com Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum e um roteiro modificado. 

The film was based on a short story published at Playboy magazine in 1957, written by George Langelaan and adapted for the screen by newcomer James Clavell, who later would be the screenwriter and director of “To Sir, With Love” (1968). The success of the horror movie was imediate, but director Kurt Neumann didn't see the opening of his finest creation, because he passed away a few weeks before the film opened. Two sequels followed: “Return of the Fly” (1959), again with Vincent Price, shot in black and white and focusing on Philippe Delambre, the heir and enthusiast of the teletransportation machine; and “Curse of the Fly” (1965), with different characters. A remake was amde in 1986, with Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum and a different story.

Modesto no orçamento, com um laboratório construído de entulho das Forças Armadas, “A Mosca da Cabeça Branca” foi um estrondoso sucesso de público e crítica, se tornou clássico Cult e um marco na carreira do sempre assustador Vincent Price.

With a modest budget and a lab built with trash from the Armed Forces, “The Fly” was a huge success with both moviegoers and film critics, became a cult classic and was a milestone in the career of the always scary Vincent Price.
