Os laços de família de Mia Farrow

Mia Farrow's family ties

Have you heard of six degrees of separation? This theory says that anyone is connected with any other person on Earth through six connections. The same game of six degrees can be played in the film world – there's always someone who worked with someone else, or who was married to someone or... I think you get the idea. And if Mia Farrow enters the game, connecting the dots gets even easier – after all, she had relationships with many Hollywood big figures.

Many people remember Mia's relationships with three important names in the arts – Frank Sinatra, André Previn and Woody Allen – but ignore that she was Hollywood royalty from birth. The daughter of a movie star and a director, she was always meant for the limelight. Let's see her family ties:

Mother: Maureen O'Sullivan (1911-1998)

Born in Ireland, Mia's mother is best known today for playing Jane in a series of Tarzan movies starring Johnny Weissmuller in the 1930s and 1940s. A former school classmate of Vivien Leigh, Maureen was first cast as an ingenué, and from the mid-1940s onwards appeared mainly in her husband's films up until his death, when she continued her career in film and theater. She suffered a hard blow when her oldest son died in 1958, and found in acting the strength to carry on.

Pai: John Farrow (1904-1963)

Father: John Farrow (1904-1963)

John Villiers Farrow was a film director best known for noirs like “Where Danger Lives” (1950) and “The Big Clock” (1948), a film starring O'Sullivan. He also won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Around the World in Eighty Days” (1956). Born in Australia, he entered Hollywood as a screenwriter, and was supposed to work in a Tarzan picture in 1936, but the deal didn't happen and he started directing. He enlisted the Canadian Navy during WWII, but had typhus in 1942 and had to leave the Navy. Once healthy again, he worked for Paramount, RKO and as a freelance director.
Farrow and O'Sullivan married in 1936 and had seven children. Maria de Lourdes Villiers Farrow, or Mia Farrow, is the oldest surviving child.

Sister: Prudence Farrow (born 1948)

You may not know Mia's sister Prudence, but you have heard a song about her: “Dear Prudence”, by The Beatles. She met the band while in India studying Transcendental Meditation and they became friends, although she preferred to isolate and meditate instead of socializing with them. She also worked in the art department of “The Purple Rose of Cairo” (1985).

Esposo: Frank Sinatra (casados 1966-1968)

Husband: Frank Sinatra (married 1966-1968)

When Mia was born, in 1945, Sinatramania was in full swing. Frank Sinatra became a superstar in the early 1940s, as both a fantastic crooner and a handsome young fellow. In the following years he also showed his talent in acting, and even won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “From Here to Eternity” (1953).
Mia and Frank met in 1964 at the cafeteria of Twentieth Century Fox studios, where he was making a film and she was acting in a TV series. They married in 1966 in a private ceremony and were from the start the target of much criticism from the press, fellow comedians and actors and also from Sinatra’s fans. It’s said that Sinatra wanted Mia to abandon her film career, which she refused, and they ended up agreeing that she could make one film per year. In 1968, when she was shooting “Rosemary’s Baby”, Sinatra filled for divorce. Mia was tempted to abandon the project, but chose acting over marriage. Even though they seemed a mismatched pair, Mia later confessed that Sinatra was the love of her life.

Musician André Previn met Mia, who was 16 years his junior, when he was still married to his second wife. André divorced his wife when Mia found out she was pregnant with twins. They married in 1970, had three children and adopted three more. German-born Previn won 11 Grammys and four Oscars for “Gigi” (1958), “Porgy and Bess” (1959), “Irma La Douce” (1963) and “My Fair Lady” (1964) – and he was nominated for nine more Oscars. André was also the first musician to have a jazz album that sold over one million copies.

Companheiro: Woody Allen (juntos 1979-1992)

Juntos, Allen e Mia fizeram 12 filmes.

Partner: Woody Allen (together 1979-1992)

I’m not particularly fond of Woody Allen and there is a lot of polemic surrounding him. Nevertheless, he made his best movies with Mia as his lead. Much more than a muse, she was the force that made films like “The Purple Rose of Cairo” and “Hannah and her Sisters” (1986) work. Together, Allen and Mia made 12 films.

Very few journalists had the same impact in Hollywood as Ronan Farrow. One of the voices denouncing Harvey Weinstein as a sexual predator, Ronan's series of articles generated a book, a podcast and gave him and his team a Pulitzer prize. In the film world, he voiced two minor characters in Studio Ghibli movies “From Up on Poppy Hill” (2011) and “The Wind Rises” (2013).
Carrying his grandmother's O'Sullivan last name, Ronan graduated Bard College at only 15, was a spokesperson for UNICEF, advised both Obama and Hillary Clinton – and looks like this is just the beginning of his impressive career.

And now we get to Mia herself. A polio survivor – she was nine when she got the disease – a mother of 14 – four biological, ten adoptive children – actress, philanthropist, UNICEF ambassador. Mia was nominated for seven Golden Globes and was praised by her charity work. Having lost three of her adoptive children, she showed strength to carry on and keep on doing good, being this notable woman who not always has the admiration she deserves.

Sinatramania

Teenagers and young women screaming until they become voiceless. When they finally see their idol, they scream louder, cry, faint. Some of them even go after the idol, in the pursuit of an autograph, photo or, maybe, a lock of hair. Are they 21st century fans of the newest singer who is currently in vogue? No. Insane fans is nothing new. Did Al Jolson have to deal with crazy flappers? Were there any Beethoven groupies? Of course, I can't answer these questions because I don't have any proof, but I can show an example of superstardom from 70 years ago. In the 1940s, almost all girls were crazy for Sinatra.

Francis Albert Sinatra was born in 1915. Young Frank loved music and, according to biographic books, started performing at family gatherings and at his parents' tavern in Hoboken – he only learned music by ear, that is, he couldn't read music sheets. When he was 20, he had his first break: as a member of the group “The Hoboken Four”, he got his frst contract for a tour. And guess which of the four boys from Hoboken attracted all the girls' attention?

After singing with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra, it was time for Frank Sinatra to go solo and cause mayheim in the music world. In December 1942, Frank was nervous as he was beginning his solo career, but when he arrived in the Paramount Theater in New York, something else made him nervous: the excitement of his fans. There were thousands of hysterical bobby-soxers, teenagers who had heard him on the radio and now were more than excited to see him live.

And during the following three or four years, Sinatra kept on driving teenagers crazy – even though he was a married man in his late 20s... or maybe this was the reason? The climax of his popularity and a pinnacle in American pop culture is the Columbus Day riot: a concert again at the Paramount Theater in New York on October 12th 1944 that attracted more crazy fans than ever. At midnight, the line started forming, and in four hours there were already 500 teenagers waiting to see Frank. Some of them didn't even have tickets, they only wanted the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the idol. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Were these girls right to be crazily in love with Frank Sinatra? I think so. He was a very skinny, blue-eyed, black-haired man with a powerful voice that didn't seem to match his physique. He had looks and talent. In a subconscious level, he was a symbol in war times: he was considered unfit to serve the army and stayed in the US singing, and for many girls he represented the boy-next-door that was fighting in Europe – and could never return. Sinatra himself said that the loneliness of war years was one of the things responsible for his massive success.

Ele é, no filme, o tipo mais fofo de tímido, e até canta a doce “I Fall in Love Too Easily”.

In his first films, this image was explored. In “Anchors Aweigh” (1945), his character, Clarence, is too shy and asks his friend Joe (Gene Kelly) to teach him how to get girls. He is, in this film, the cutest kind of shy, and even sings the sweet song “I Fall in Love Too Easily”. Almost the same kind of behavior can be found in Chip, his character in “On the Town” (1949). Chip wants to see all the New York landmarks his grandfather has once seen – the problem is that almost all of these landmarks don't exist anymore. Chip doesn't pursue a girl like Gene Kelly's Gabey does – it's smart taxi driver Hildy (Betty Garrett) that must flirt with him aggressively again and again.

It's very interesting to notice how we still use some terms and ideas from the Sinatramania in our concepts of internet fandom. Frank was commonly referred to as “Swoonatra”. The girls in his fandom called themselves “Sinatratics” - in the same way that the Beyonce fandom is the “Beyhive” and we Benedict Cumberbatch's fans call ourselves “Cumberbitches”. I only wonder what hashtags the Sinatratics would use on Twitter and Tumblr...

They also kind of cosplayed: the Sinatratics wore bow-ties, just like their idol, and usually pinned Sinatra's pictures to their outfits. And many people found a way of exploring the Sinatramania in order to make money: there were several products with Sinatra's face on it, he was on the over of many magazines, and once, some publicity photos were taken showing Frank Sinatra as a member of a high school glee club. The problem was that the photos were staged by photographer Peter Martin in order to make Sinatra even closer to his fans – in reality, he was never a part of a glee club and was actually 27 when the pic was taken. The fans, of course, didn't care.

Frank Sinatra saw his film career suffer a little in the end of the 1940s, but he returned in 1953 with an Oscar-winning performance in “From Here to Eternity”. His singing career was successful until his death, in 1998 – 20 years ago – and we can't deny that he is still a major influence in the music world (according to Spotify, Frank has more than 5 million faithful monthly listeners on the straming platform, me included). For him and for pop culture, Sinatramania was just the beginning.

Corações Enamorados / Young at Heart (1954)

When I started watching “Young at Heart” (1954), I thought I was in for a treat: a romantic comedy with Doris Day and Frank Sinatra. Boy, how wrong I was! It is a love story, yes, but much darker than I expected. In the end, I was shaking. And I enjoyed every minute of it.

Everybody loves music in the Tuttle family. The father, Gregory (Robert Keith), is, obviously, a music teacher. The three daughters all play instruments, but they’re more interested in one thing: getting married. When the oldest, Fran (Dorothy Malone) tells the family she is engaged, the two younger girls, Laurie (Doris Day) and Amy (Elisabeth Fraser), fear becoming spinters like aunt Jessie (Ethel Barrymore), who also lives in the house.

One day, a tall dark stranger arrives in town. He is not Frank Sinatra, and he’s not such a stranger either. He is Alex Burke (Gig Young), a musician whose father was best friends with Gregory Tuttle. He came to study at Gregory’s conservatory and to live in the Tuttle’s house. He is instantly smitten with Laurie. However, all three Tuttle sisters fall for him.

Laurie and Alex seem perfect for each other. Then another guy arrives: Barney Sloan (Frank Sinatra) comes in to help Alex with some piano arrangements. Barney is as talented a musician as Alex – maybe even more – but he is too bitter. He’s always complaining, never smiles, blames everybody and everything for his lack of success.

Laurie gets interested in such a cynical character and falls in love. This proves that “love at first sight” is a myth and actually “animosity at first encounter” is the real indicative of love (sarcasm alert!). And when you think everything is wonderful, tragedy strucks.

“Young at Heart” was the first film produced by Arwin Productions, a company owned by Doris Day and her then husband Martin Melcher. Sinatra disliked Melcher immensely, and demanded him to not be allowed on set. Frank tried to prevent Doris of her husband’s behavior, but it didn’t work: 14 years later, when Doris and Martin divorced, she found out he had left her penniless.
Doris Day & Martin Melcher

And this wasn’t the only trouble Sinatra caused on set. He demanded the ending to be changed – because “Young at Heart” is a remake of “Four Daughters” (1938), which was John Garfield’s screen debut. He also argued with the first director of photography, Charles Lang, and demanded Ted D. McCord to replace Lang. These episodes show that Frank could be as bitter as his character, but another on-set situation shows his sweet side: he threw a surprise birthday party for co-star Ethel Barrymore, who was then in frail health, but who loved the gesture.

Sinatra and Day sung together in radio in various occasions of the 1940s and their songs, sung in a duet or not, are the highlight of “Young at Heart”. In the movie, they don’t have a great chemistry – it’s rather a lot of compassion what they have. Ethel Barrymore is delightful in the beginning, and nearly vanishes as the film progresses. Gig Young is a Ralph Bellamy type to Doris Day – which means that more than once he almost marries her character, but ends up losing her.

It’s not another feel-good musical. In pace, it’s very similar to “The Glenn Miller Story”, released the same year. Sincerely, I liked “Young at Heart”, and I’m not sure about the other end that was first planned. I’m happy it at least ended in a positive note – much more suitable for its time and its stars.

Once upon a time there was Francis Albert Sinatra, born in Hoboken in December 1915, with a marvelous voice and gorgeous blue eyes. In the early 1940s, he attracted crowds to his shows, and right after he became a movie star. Once upon a time there was Ava Lavinia Gardner, born in North Carolina in December 1922, a country girl whose beauty was noticed by Hollywood and was underused during her first years there. These were the ingredients of the prettiest couple of the 20th century.

Frank and Ava's relationship could be recounted in many ways. A cheap reality show could be created with their quarrels. A book could be written about them. Impressive X-rated stories could be told. But this blog isn't, has never been and will never be a place for gossip. Hollywood Babylon is somewhere else. Our focus here will be the good moments the couple shared, the ones responsible for their never ending passion.

In 1948, Frank and Ava had met each other a few times already. The first one was in 1940, and Ava had just arrived in Hollywood. Frank remembered that he thought she was pretty, but too young. Three years later, they danced together in a party, but Frank was with Lana Turner and Ava with Howard Hughes.

In 1948, Ava Gardner had already married twice: with Mickey Rooney, then with Artie Shaw. Both marriages ended in divorce. In 1948 Frank was still in his first marriage, and his younger daughter  Tina had just been born. In a fatidic night in 1948, Frank was in the balcony in his Hollywood penthouse, and his friend, composer Sammy Cahn, pointed to Ava's house, that was down Sunset Strip.

With malice, Frank called her, and his unmistakable voice was recognized. Ava waved from her window. A few days later they met and started to date. In 1950  Frank divorced his wife Nancy. In 1951, he and Ava had a small wedding ceremony.

Frank and Ava were like two chemical substances. They could even mix, but a violent reaction would follow. It was an explosive relationship since the beginning, with sex, alcohol, betrayal, arguments and apologies. In Frank's and Ava's opinions, life should be lived with intensity.

When the marriage started to go down, it was like the storyline of “A Star is Born”: the wife was becoming more and more successful, while the husband lost his place in show business. Ava would soon act in iconic films such as “Mogambo” (1953) and “The Barefoot Contessa” (1954). Frank didn't make a movie since 1951 and his popularity as a musician was going down with the rise of rock'n roll.

In 1953, thanks to his wife, Sinatra landed a part in the movie “From Here to Eternity”, the one that gave new life to his career and gave him an Oscar. At the same time, Ava went to work in Europe. The relationship was deteriorating, and in 1954 Ava asked for the divorce.

Definitive separation only came in 1957. Until there, and even later, the romantic dates and the fights didn't stop. Frank and Ava remained close until her death.

From the relationship there was left a huge love and Ava's passion for corgis. On Christmas Day, 1953, Frank gave Ava a corgi named Rags, and from then on the corgis became Ava's favorite dog breed. She never again was seen without a corgi. After her death, in 1990, her last dog, Morgan, went to live with her close friend Gregory Peck.

Ava Gardner never remarried. Frank Sinatra married two other times. Nevertheless, they never forgot each other, and never got over the separation. Frank and Ava are a not so rare case of a perfect match ruined by marriage. The prettiest and most explosive couple in Hollywood didn't live happily ever after, but there was always love.
