A História da Humanidade (1957) / The Story of Mankind (1957)

More stars than there are in Heaven: with this motto the “all-star” movies were advertised. These were movies with an impressive cast, and among them we can mention “Grand Hotel” (1932), “Dinner at Eight” (1933), “Tales of Manhattan” (1942) and “How the West Was Won” (1952). If a good cast reflects in the quality of the movie, this means that an “all-star” movie can’t be bad, right? Wrong. Let’s take a look at an “all-star” movie gone terribly wrong: “The Story of Mankind” (1957).

The plot is actually interesting. After the development of a weapon named Super H-Bomb – that is, a hydrogen bomb –, celestial beings call for a tribunal in outer space to decide the fate of mankind. Should mankind be saved from itself or will the celestial beings let men destroy other men? In order to decide, the judges will hear arguments from the Spirit of Man (Ronald Colman), who will try to protect mankind, and from the Devil (Vincent Price), who will try to prove that mankind has always been evil and deserves to be erased from Earth. In the following 90 minutes, you’ll be served a parade of special guests and also some ridiculous onscreen deaths.

The movie is not very kind to the notorious women of history. It portrays Helen of Troy as a futile femme fatale, Cleopatra as a pickpocket (also futile) and Marie Antoinette as an inconsiderate tyrant. Joan of Arc (played by Hedy Lamarr) is a heroine, but the Devil uses her case to prove that people are evil because they betray other people, as Joan was betrayed by her fellow Frenchmen. Women are often erased from history, and it’s a shame that, when they are acknowledged, they are portrayed as less-than-complex characters.

Most of he moments of goodness shown by the Spirit of Man are connected with religion. This includes the reveal of the ten commandments to Moses, the first Catholics praying in the catacombs in Rome, the monks that kept God’s word alive during the Middle Ages. All this Catholic speech is odd, and even odder considering that the movie says that the courtroom is in outer space, and not Heaven. In these moments, the film becomes too preachy, sounding more than a moral lesson than a piece of entertainment.

The Story of Mankind” presents only Eurocentric history, even being “anglocentric” when it tells, for instance, that law and order were brought back to the world when king John signed the Magna Carta in the 13th century. By following this vision, the Devil makes a point, for instance, when he talks about the destruction brought by the colonizers to America, with the slaughter of the natives. The Devil also scores when the Spirit of Men tries to paint English colonizers as true gentlemen, and the Devil reminds him of slavery.

Ronald Colman was a perfect choice to play the Spirit of Man and defend us all. A superb actor, Colman often played honored characters, like the lead in “A Tale of Two Cities” (1935). Vincent Price was also perfectly cast as the Devil: suave yet cold, his onscreen persona matches this portrayal of a handsome and intellect-driven devil.

The premise of “The Story of Mankind” is actually very intellectual: is man intrinsically good or evil? This is a centuries-old question, one that has divided philosophers through the ages: Thomas Hobbes thinks we’re inherently evil, Jean-Jacques Rousseau thinks humans are good. Modern complex societies – and by “modern” I mean societies like the ones that emerged in Mesopotamia around 3,000 b.C. - are the societies where tyrannical leaders could emerge – and convince or force people to do harm. Social psychologists, after experiments and the observation of the trials in Nuremberg, concluded that it is the situation that determines if a person will do good or behave badly. Nobody was able to give a definitive answer to the question – not even this film.

The Story of Mankind” was directed, produced and co-written by Irwin Allen, using as source a non-fiction book of the same title published in 1921. Irwin Allen’s name is familiar for fans of the “disaster movie” genre: he was the producer of “The Poseidon Adventure” (1972), “The Towering Inferno” (1974) and the ridiculous “The Swarm” (1978).

In 1957, Allen was just a former publicist who was making his live-action feature film debut after directing two documentaries. According to press releases of the time, “The Story of Mankind” was first supposed to be a three-hour epic with only two actors, a man and a woman, telling the whole history of mankind. Things changed and an all-star cast was assembled to make the movie as we know it – that is, full of anachronisms and factual errors.

I always try to find redemptive characteristics even in the worst movies, and I managed to find some in “The Story of Mankind”. Groucho Marx’s bit as an English settler is funny. We have Francis X. Bushman, a superstar from the silent era, as Moses. The cinematography by Nicholas Musuraca – credited as “Nick” – is very good. Surprisingly, there is no blackface, brownface or yellowface.

I read somewhere that history is a bunch of horrible people doing horrible deeds. I’ve thought about this definition often, and I tend to agree with it. With genocides, wars and so much more bad things that have happened and are happening right now, I also tend to agree with the Devil from “The Story of Mankind” – the most reasonable voice in a film that sometimes feels like religious propaganda, and most of the time is just a beautiful mess.

Lost in Translation: odd classic film titles in Portuguese - Marx Brothers edition

There are few things more difficult for a translator than to translate a pun and make it work. Imagine then the difficulty of translating a movie that is full of puns and witty lines, such as the Marx Brothers movies. Most of what makes them fun loses the meaning in a language that is not English. For instance: the famous “sanity clause” joke from “A Night at the Opera” (1935) meant nothing when translated to Portuguese, so imagine my face the first time I watched it and found the joke to fall flat. I could only fully understand it when I saw the scene in the original English without subtitles.

I chose the Marx Brothers as the subject of my second installment of the “lost in translation: odd classic film titles in Portuguese” because the titles were deeply modified when they reached this land below the Equator. Some titles relied on puns and slangs that couldn’t be translated perfectly, and other titles were given using Brazilian slang from the time. Take a look at how the Marx Brothers movies are titled here in Brazil:

The Cocoanuts” (1929) became “In the Hotel of Confusion” (“No Hotel da Fuzarca”)

Animal Crackers” (1930) went on as “The Debauched” (“Os Galhofeiros”)

Monkey Business” (1931) received the title “The Four Fine Fellows” (“Os Quatro Batutas”)

Horse Feathers” (1932) is here “Geniuses of the Ball” (“Gênios da Pelota”)

Duck Soup” (1934) was titled, literally, as “the devil at four”, a slang that means “mischief” (“O Diabo a Quatro”)

A Night at the Opera” (1935) remained with the same title (“Uma Noite na Ópera”)

A Day at the Races” (1937) also kept its title (“Um Dia nas Corridas”)

Room Service” (1938) became… “At Bonifácio’s Expense” (“Por Conta do Bonifácio”)

At the Circus” (1939) was retitled as “The Marx Brothers at the Circus” (“Os Irmãos Marx no Circo”)

Go West” (1940) became “In the Jaguar’s Time”, a slang referring to an old time (“No Tempo do Onça”)

The Big Store” (1941) was retitled as “Wacky House” (“Casa Maluca”)

A Night in Casablanca” (1946) kept its title (“Uma Noite em Casablanca”)

Love Happy” (1949) became “Crazy for Love” (“Loucos de Amor”)

O quinto irmão Marx: Margaret Dumont

The fifth Marx brother: Margaret Dumont

Equilíbrio.

Balance.

Balance is what we all should seek in life, and also in art. Life – and art – without balance is just exaggeration, and it's never good. Who lives live without balance is, sooner or later, punished by justice or karma. Art without balance is not nice to look at, is rejected by the public, is often labeled as “of bad taste”.

If there is not a more “normal” character to create balance in a crazy duo, trio or group, the comedy may fall flat. Hardy was smarter, and more down-to-earth than Laurel. We needed straight man Dean Martin to go with the shenanigans of goofy Jerry Lewis. And there was always someone more normal along the Three Stooges. All to create balance. Because the public needs an identification with someone onscreen, the more normal, the better.

And what about being the only one normal in the middle of four weirdos? This was Margaret Dumont's hard task in the seven movies she did with the Marx Brothers. Because she wasn't just an island of reason in a sea of wackiness, like Zeppo was, she was also the target of many, many jokes.

The name Daisy Juliette Baker may not ring a bell, but it was with this name that Margaret was christened when she was born, in 1882. She was a trained soprano, and first entered vaudeville when she was about to turn 20. Her beauty as a young woman was mesmerizing, and she was often cast in “soubrette” roles: the ones of young flirtatious girls in comic operas and shows.

Her first entertainment phase lasted until 1910, when she married heir John Moller Jr. During the 1918 influenza pandemic, her husband died and the 36-year-old widow came back to the stages.

It was on the stage that she first met the four Marx brothers. In 1925 she was cast in their play The Cocoanuts. In 1928, she was again cast along them in Animal Crackers. When the brothers received an offer from Paramount to transport their plays to the – now talking – movies, Margaret followed them. Until then she had only appeared as an uncredited extra in two silent films.

Today, many of the brothers' antics would be considered unpolite or politically incorrect. Margaret entered the movies business with the brothers when she was 47, so she was no youngster, and we know how hard work is for older actresses. Too often she was insulted, called – indirectly – ugly or fat or ancient by a Groucho Marx who was only eight years her junior. It can be said the insults are part of Groucho's fun, or that Margaret didn’t understand the jokes (which is not true, since she was an experienced and intelligent performer herself).

It's interesting to notice how strong Margaret's relationship with Groucho was. She fondly called him “Julie” in real life – Groucho’s real name is Julius – and Groucho said that the public often thought he and Margaret were, indeed, a couple off-screen. When he received an Honorary Oscar in 1974, Margaret was one of the few people he thanked – brothers Gummo and Zeppo, who were still alive, were left out of the acceptance speech. And Margaret's last appearance on camera happened alongside Groucho in the TV show The Hollywood Palace, eight days before her death.

What is your favorite holiday? Your birthday should be a holiday? Or maybe you prefer Christmas or Easter? Well, my favorite day of the year (and one I celebrate like a holiday) is National Classic Movie Day, the wonderful May 16th.

I love many films, from many genres. For a cinephile, to choose a favorite film is a difficult task. And how about choosing five films to take to a desert island with you? The challenge was given, and this is my list of five classic movies I'd watch over and over again in my island, until I could be rescued to see more classics.

1- Ben-Hur (1925): Anyone would freak out in a desert island without spiritual support. That's why my favorite religious film would be an essential item. Besides the wonderfully inspiring story, this silent movie has breathtaking sequences in two-strip Technicolor!

2- All Quiet on the Western Front (1930): Having a desert island only for you may seem wonderful, but sooner or later you'll miss having people around you. When this happens, my solution will be this heartbreaking film. After watching it, I'll be glad again to be far away from the human bestialities.

3- Horse Feathers (1932): The Marx brothers are comedy geniuses, and I really, really love them. Every time “Horse Feathers”, a relatively short but very funny movie, is on TV, I need to stop whatever I'm doing and watch it. And every time I discover a new pun or funny quote that had escaped me earlier. There is no better companion in a desert island than Harpo, Chico, Groucho, Zeppo and Thelma Todd!

4- A Star is Born (1937): There are some films that we cannot explain. They simply move us, talk to us, touch our hearts in a way that other thousands of films haven't done. “A Star is Born” has comedy, drama, romance, the film industry, Technicolor and tears. It's simply an important film to me – and an important film to make me survive in the desert island.

5- Singin’ in the Rain (1952): I have the impression that this film will also be included in other “5 Movies on an Island” lists. Simply because it is the best feel-good movie of all times. If I’m sad, a scene or a song from the movie can make me happy again. To escape from bad mood in the island, “Singin’ in the Rain” is mandatory, even though I probably already know the film by heart.

Um dia nas corridas / A day at the races (1937)

How can a horse save an asylum? By winning an important race. And what happens if the ones involved in the race are as zany as the three Marx brothers?

Veterinarian Hugo Z. Hackenbush (Groucho Marx) is hired to be a psychiatrist (!) at Judy's (Maureen O'Sullivan) asylum, a place about to be closed. There, the worst case is Mrs Emily Upjohn (Margaret Dumont), a rich woman who apparently has no disease at all. And that's the problem: she WANTS  the doctors to find something wrong with her, and so does Judy, or the richest patient in the asylum will go away. Judy's boyfriend, Gil (Allan Jones), owns the horse Hit-Hat, the one who becomes their only hope when a race with a big prize is announced. Stuffy (Harpo Marx) will be the jockey.

This is the second film the brothers did at MGM, and it has one thing in common with the first: there are a romantic subplot and musical numbers mixed with the brothers' anarchy. Zeppo left the group and left a space for a not-so-crazy character. Here the normal one is played by Allan Jones, who also acted and sang in “A Night at the Opera” and “Show Boat” (1936).

Even before “A Night at the Opera” (1935) premiered, the MGM screenwriters were working on this film. Eighteen screenplays were refused, until finally Irving Thalberg approved one and let pre-production start. But, two weeks later, Irving died suddenly at age 37. Chaos spread in MGM and the Marx brothers' fate became darker, since they were Irving's protegées. Groucho even said the, with Irving's death, he lost the will of making movies.

The horserace is the film's climax, and a long, funny sequence happens in the jockey club: it's when Chico sends a coded message to Groucho tobhelp him to earn money betting on the races. However, who really gets richer as the scene develops is Chico, who sells several books só Groucho can decipher the code Chico gave him in the start.

My favorite brother is Groucho, who has excellent moments and hilarious lines. With a quick, envy-inducing train of thoughts, he always has the perfect comeback for any complicated situation. And the studio itself had to face one complicated situation: when pre-production began, Groucho's character was named Dr. Quackenbush. However, there were 37 real doctors named Quackenbush who could sue MGM, so the studio had to change the character's name. Groucho liked the change so much that every now and then he signed his letters as Hugo Z. Hackenbush.

In the film there are good moments with Chico and Harpo, in special during Gil's big concerto, in which they make a huge mess. In one of the best comic/musical scenes, Harpo destroys a piano and transforms it in a harp. MGM, home of the biggest film musicals, included several singing and dancing routines in the movie. The second of them has a crowd of black people, including then-unknown Dorothy Dandrige. Years later, this sequence was dut when the film was shown on TV, because it was considered too racist.

This is the longest of the Marx brothers' movie, even thought it's not two hours long. It was also their only film to receive an Oscar nomination,in the Dance Direction category, one that was extinct after 1938. And, to add to the records, this was the Marx film with the highest box-office: four million dollars.

Proving what Chico had said in the previous movie, that “There ain't no sanity clause” - the film had no sanity at all, and in it the brothers do another fun and inspired comedy, ending the movie with a quote that soon would become über-famous in film history: “Tomorrow is another day”.
