Os Três Xarás (1951) / Three Guys Named Mike (1951)

Here’s something we don’t see a lot of anymore: girls wanting to become flight attendants. In the past, it was one of the most dreamed-about careers for girls and young women – that is, until they got married and retired for family life. There was a certain glamour in flying and helping people feel comfortable in the air. In the 1950s, being a flight attendant was a dream for many, including from the lead of “Three Guys Named Mike” (1951) – and it was because of flying that she got to know the three Mikes who would change her life.

Marcy Lewis (Jane Wyman) leaves her hometown to go to Chicago to become a stewardess. Her studies go smooth, the real adventures begin when she starts flying. On the way to her first flight ever, her cab breaks on the road and she takes a lift with Mike Jamison (Howard Keel), who doesn’t tell her he’s an airplane pilot. Without knowing his real profession, while making small talk Marcy tells him that stewardesses are the most important in a flight, because pilots are “only chauffeurs”. They meet again inside the plane.

Marcy’s first flight is a disaster. Not only she doesn’t get along with Mike Jamison, but she also forgets to furnish the plane with food and they have to go back to fetch the food. Luckily, Marcy is not fired and starts flying constantly alongside Jamison, developing camaraderie with him. That’s why Jamison gets sad when Marcy is assigned for a new route, Chicago-Los Angeles, and reunited with a friend from stewardess school.

In her new route, Marcy meets Mike Lawrence (Van Johnson) and with him she helps a little girl who can’t sleep during the flight. Marcy’s friend believes Lawrence is a “VIP”, but he actually is scientist with a side job as a bartender, who Marcy meets again at a restaurant. Now, with three of her friends, Marcy decides to rent a house in Los Angeles. Enters Mike Tracy (Barry Sullivan), an advertisement man who helps Marcy on the road (again a car issue) and later meets her at the airport.

The three Mikes meet when they help Marcy with the moving. The confusion and jealousy is instantaneous. And things definetely don’t get any easier when Marcy gets involved in one of Mike Tracy’s advertising campaign after having a brilliant idea.

Stewardesses – or flight attendants, as they are known now – have to deal with many issues. They have to make sure that everybody was comfortable inside the plane, sometimes dealing with a scared child (or adult!) or a nervous flier. They have to be always calm and polite, even when there is something wrong with the plane. They also have to deal with passengers hitting on them, something that is shown in “Three Guys Named Mike” as a joke, but this “joke” can be quite unpleasant.

A surprise in the opening credits: who wrote the screenplay was Sidney Sheldon, who would become a famous novelist in the following decades, based on a story by Ruth Brooks Flippen. This is Ruth’s first writing credit, and she would go on to have a long career on television, writing for shows such as “Gidget”, “Bewitched” and “The Brady Bunch”. Ruth’s story, in turn, was based on a suggestion made by real-life stewardess Ethel Wells.

I have to confess that, from the three Mikes, I was rooting for the one played by Van Johnson. What really got me was his speech about teaching: how teaching is the closest from immortality that you can get, how a simple thing you say in a class might change someone’s life forever. As the daughter of a teacher and someone whose life was changed by a few teachers, I can say that his whole speech is true, and very romantic as well. Of course, Mike Jamison also has a good speech, about how he doesn’t want to miss a thing in life, but Mike Lawrence’s touches me deeper.

“Three Guys Named Mike” is a funny movie, perfect for a lazy weekend or evening. It almost made me dream about being a flight attendant! It also reminded me, in moments, of one of my favorite TV shows, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”, where a girl has three potential lovers. Marcy may not have Rebecca Bunch’s chaotic energy, and it’s a film from the 1950s, which means that in the end Marcy will have to choose one of the three Mikes. I’m glad we, the audience, don’t have to choose.

A Noiva Desconhecida (1949) / In the Good Old Summertime (1949)

They are coworkers who deeply dislike each other, but at the same time, without them knowing, they are pen pals who share confidences in much awaited letters every week. Yes, you've seen this story before: filmed for the first time as “The Shop Around the Corner” (1940) and later as “You've Got Mail” (1998), this predictable yet charming story was transported to early 20th century Chicago in “In the Good Old Summertime”.

The meet cute between Andrew 'Andy' Larkin (Van Johnson) and Veronica Fisher (Judy Garland) is cute for us, but unpleasant for them. Things get bitterer when Veronica goes to a music store searching for a job and Andy, who works there, tells her there is no place in the store for another salesperson. With a song, she proves him wrong and gets the job, also selling the first of 100 harps the owner of the shop has bought.

There's another couple in the store: the owner, Mr Oberkugen (S.Z. 'Cuddles' Sakall) and his cashier and secretary Nellie (Spring Byington). They have known each other for 20 years and have some kind of relationship that hasn'tended in a marriage yet. Speaking of relationships, one employee of the store is related to Mr Oberkugen: Hickey, played by the great Buster Keaton, is the owner's nephew.

Van Johnson had a huge charisma and it translated in his performances. He is the cutest in “In the Good Old Summertime”, especially when he can't see that a girl who plays the violin and lives in the same boarding house as his is in love with him. It's not very nice of him, however, when he finds out Veronica is his pen pal and decides to show up to their date only to pick up on her.

In the beginning of 1948 Judy Garland was finishing the shooting of “Easter Parade”. After some rest, she returned to work in “In the Good Old Summertime”. Filming went smoothly, a rare thing at the time for Judy. What collaborated for the good times on set was, as Van Johnson explained: “We made her feel wanted and needed. We joked with her and kept her happy”. Camaraderie was the secret of this success.

Buster Keaton was working as a gag writer at MGM when he was called to make the movie. He has only one great moment of slapstick and not enough time on screen to please hardcore fans like me. Buster also coached the meet cute between Andy and Veronica, when a collision makes him destroy her hat.

For a musical, “In the Good Old Summertime” has few musical moments, being Judy Garland's “I Don't Care” the most memorable one. There are no original songs in the film, all of the songs sung in the music shop or at parties were really released in the early 20th century, when the story is set.

Having a pen pal is rather common now – with the pen and ink becoming the bits and bytes of online friendships. As in any relationship, there is power involved. In “In the Good Old Summertime”, Van Johnson's character has the advantage of knowing who his pen pal is without her doing the same, and thus he can play a bit with her and manipulate their relationship. The addition of Louise, Andy's violinist friend, brings another element to the relationship, and poses a threat to their happy ending for a while, when Andy is unaware that Veronica loves him.

It's impossible to miss, in the very ending, the film debut of a tiny Liza Minnelli. It's an adorable ending for an adorable film, a true heartwarming classic.

Renúncia ao Ódio (1956) / The Bottom of the Bottle (1956)

“The Bottom of the Bottle” is set on a ranch, but it's not exactly a western. The film is also about escaping from prison, but it's not a prison movie. And it has noir overtones, but it's not fully noir. Luckily, “The Bottom of the Bottle” is hard to define, but easy to enjoy.

Numa noite, Pat ‘P.M.’

One night, Pat 'P.M.' Martin (Joseph Cotten) crosses the border to Mexico. When he comes back, it's raining a lot, the river near his house has overflowed and he has an unexpected guest at home: his younger brother Donald Martin (Van Johnson), who has just escaped from prison and wants Pat to drive him past the border.

Pat's wife, Nora (Ruth Roman), has never heard of Donald, so Pat introduces him as Eric Bell, an old friend he ran into. Besides having a problem with the law, Donald / Eric also has a drinking problem, and to complete the chaotic scenario he can't cross the border because of the overflowed river.

Everybody has at least an issue in this movie: Nora has a troubled marriage with Pat, Pat lies to hide Donald’s real identity to his wealthy friends, and Donald must not succumb to temptation and start drinking again. It’s been more than a decade since “The Lost Weekend” (1945), and now cinema treats alcoholism as a serious subject. With so many issues, you can expect a few Homeric confrontations.

Van Johnson's performance is very good, in special in a few particular scenes: when he receives a call at Lil's house and starts becoming nervous, attracting everyone's attention, and when he talks to his wife and children on the phone, on the verge of tears. In fact, this is the best performance by Van Johnson I have seen so far.

Joseph Cotten had a huge acting range, from hero to chilling villain – like in Hitchcock's “Shadow of a Doubt” (1943). Here he is a troubled hero who has to make peace with his brother and with his past. Van Johnson has the meatier role, and Cotten does the best with what he's given. And he and Johnson sure look like brothers!

Ruth Roman is very well as a woman in a marriage going through a permanent crisis. Pat worries more about his reputation than about his wife, and he doesn't want what she longs for the most: children. Ruth Roman’s most famous role was Anne in “Strangers on a Train” (1951), and she is also known for being a survivor at the sinking of the SS Andrea Doria.

“The Bottom of the Bottle” is based on an autobiographical novel by Georges Simenon. Simenon was like Pat: he lived in Nogales, Arizona, by the Mexican border and was doing well in life, while his brother Christian got in trouble. So far, there are over 170 film and TV adaptations of Simenon’s work, most of them made in his homeland, France – being “The Bottom of the Bottle”, of course, an exception.

Henry Hathaway is a director that is not as praised as he should be. He worked as an actor only once, in 1917, and in 1919 started working with props. He graduated to assistant director in 1924 and to director in 1930. He directed many successful westerns and also “Niagara” (1953), a film that, like “The Bottom of the Bottle”, stars Joseph Cotten, has noir elements and involves a key sequence in a river.

With only 85 minutes, “The Bottom of the Bottle” wasn’t, unfortunately, a box-office hit. It has, however, the best of many worlds and it presents its leads at their best. For a quick and thrilling entertainment, “The Bottom of the Bottle” is a good idea – to not be consumed moderately.

Esposas e Amantes (1963) / Wives and Lovers (1963)

Oh, the 1960s! Time of the sexual revolution, of the second wave of feminism, of the end of the ridiculous Hays Code... And Hollywod had to deal with them all. Suddenly, more risky themes could appear in movies... no, they should appear, because society wanted them and because they mirrored the reality. Suddenly, a cheater didn't have to suffer and be condemned... and even a comedy could be made about cheating.

At first, William 'Bill' Austin (Van Johnson) is a struggling writer, currently writing a cookbook. His wife Bertie (Janet Leigh) is the breadwinner of the house, and she works in a dentist's office. They have a daughter, the quirky seven and ¾ year-old Julie (Claire Wilcox). Bill's fragile male ego was hurt because his wife was working and he wasn't, until a big change happens: Bill's literary agent Lucinda Ford (Martha Hyer) sells Bill's novel's rights for a book club and a play.

Their life changes completely. Per Bill's insistence, they move from a small New York apartment to a fancy house in Connecticut. There they meet nosy neighbors Fran (Shelley Winters) and Wylie (Ray Walston). Fran is divorced – her ex-husband is an actor – and Wylie is an interior decorator who lives in the smaller house on the back of Fran's home. They're a riot!

Nouveau riches

Bill starts to go out with Lucinda to social gatherings, leaving his family behind. But things go really wrong when Bill and Bertie host a dinner party in their house, and the guests are Fran, Wylie, Lucinda and actor Gar Aldrich (Jeremy Slate), the star of the play Bill is writing. As Lucinda starts flirting with Bill, Gar, who used to date Lucinda, flirts with Bertie.

It was obvious that the new lifestyle would harm the Austins. You can see this in a powerful visual metaphor: after receiving the news that his novel's rights were sold, Bill buys Bertie the fancy coat Lucinda is wearing and goes out to celebrate. Bertie is left in the kitchen, and puts an apron over the fancy coat – it's the old life and the new life clashing in one image.

Everybody delivers very good performances. “Wives and Lovers” is a sex comedy, like the ones with Doris Day and Rock Hudson, and we have some funny gags, like Bill's fancy sound stereo that he apparently can't turn on, but almost everybody else can. I also enjoyed when Wylie fabricated an antique piece of furniture artificially. Julie is probably the source of the most jokes. Her childish questions are funny, but for me the funniest thing is her habit of only eating when her food is not touching each other on the plate – that means, she eats a sandwich only if the ingredients come in separate plates.

Van Johnson is charming as Bill. Janet Leigh shines as Bertie. It's interesting to notice that she mentions that society wanted her to feel like if she was “like molded bread”, like a woman that couldn't be desired anymore – and Leigh was only 36 when the film was made! Indeed, Gar's courtship is an obstacle in the Austin's relationship, but it is also an opportunity for Bertie to realize that she is a gorgeous, desirable woman. By the way, the chemistry between Leigh and Johnson is no surprise, since they were god friends, and it was Johnson himself who suggested for Jeanette Helen Morrison the screen name Janet Leigh in 1947, when she was making her first film, “The Romance of Rosy Ridge”.

1947
1963

“Wives and Lovers” is a series of hits and misses. I liked the fact that both the husband and wife are tempted to cheat, so there is no judgment, fake morals or other bullshit. I disliked the fact that some male characters, in special Wylie, had to be rude and mistreat women in order to be taken seriously by then. I completely disliked some sexist moments like the horrible joke uttered by Shelley Winters: “Raped and dismembered. Why can't you have one without the other?”

Director John Rich with Johson, Slate and Leigh

You may be familiar with the song “Wives and Lovers”, that came out the same year the film did. The song by Burth Bacharach and Hal David was actually inspired by the movie! It was an exploitation song, a song composed to help promote a film, but not appearing on it. Today, the song is much better known if compared to the film, but yet I don't think the lyrics express the same complexity of relationships as the movie does.

“Wives and Lovers” should be better known. Because everybody needs a friend like Shelley Winter's character. Because no moral judgment in a 1960s movie is something rare. Because it is better than other sex comedies of the time – I'm thinking about the awful “A New Kind of Love”, also from 1963, a film that wastes Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Because the trailer for “Wives and Lovers” is deceiving and promises a sexual feast that doesn't happen. And because we all need a laugh once in a while.
