Sometimes the stars align and two of your favorites make a movie together. This is what happened in “Green Mansions”, unfortunately considered one of the worst films in the careers of two of my favorites: Audrey Hepburn and Anthony Perkins. Yes, they only interact for the first time after the 30-minute mark, but their chemistry is not what displeased the majority of the audience and gave this movie bad fame. Let’s see what happened.

We’re informed that in the early 20th century W.H. Hudson lived in the jungles of Venezuela and told the world a love story that became a modern classic. Oh…If the waterfall in the opening credits seems familiar, it’s because it was also portrayed in Disney’s “Up!” - another modern classic.

Abel (Anthony Perkins) is a man from the capital of Venezuela, Caracas, who is looking for revenge. And for this he needs gold. Entering the innermost of the jungle, he is both saved and captured by a group of natives. Since the Chief’s son speaks English, Abel is in no danger. In fact, he receives a mission: to enter the jungle and kill the Spirit of the Forest. While he’s there, he’s bitten by a coral snake but saved by Rima (Audrey Hepburn). Taken to her hut, Abel recovers and starts to believe Rima’s grandfather may know where there’s gold.

Audrey Hepburn had made over a dozen films before “Green Mansions”, and won the Best Actress Oscar for her Hollywood debut “Roman Holiday” (1953). Anthony Perkins was a rising star, having debuted in 1953 with a role in “The Actress”. To appear in this film, Hepburn refused the lead role in “The Diary of Anne Frank” (1959) and Perkins refused a role in “Some Like It Hor” (1959). The song “Green Mansions” is sung by Perkins himself, who at the time was trying a double career as actor and singer. He is not bad at singing at all!

It’s weird, however, to believe our cast is Venezuelan. This gets even harder for the actors playing natives, such as the Japanese Sessue Hayakawa (below) and Brooklyn-born Henry Silva. Their spoken language is closer to Japanese than to the languages of Amazon natives. Well, it’s Old Hollywood treating the different people as exotic once again.

Here’s a welcome surprise: “special music” was created for the film by my fellow Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos. Let me tell you a thing or two about him. The composer of over 2,000 works started playing songs for films in the early 20th century. His work was influenced by both European music and Brazilian folk music. Villa-Lobos actually based his “Green Mansions” score on the 1904 source book, not the completed film. The Polish composer Bronislau Kaper was asked to do the complete score, but retained some of Villa-Lobos’ tunes, who in turn presented his full composition later that year in New York as the cantata Forest of the Amazon.

“Green Mansions” was directed by Audrey’s then-husband Mel Ferrer. An idea for an adaptation of the book in the 1930s with Dolores Del Rio was dropped. Vincente Minnelli was then attached to direct, but an unsuccessful test with Pier Angeli as Rima led to Ferrer being chosen instead. Ferrer traveled to Venezuela and shot one hour of material that was incorporated into the film as background. “Green Mansions” was supposed to be the first project with Ferrer directing and Hepburn starring, but the commercial failure aborted the plan.

More famous than this movie is probably the little fawn Audrey adopted as a pet while filming. She named it Pippin and several photos of the two can be found online. Mel Ferrer had brought the fawn to his Hollywood home to make it acquainted to Hepburn in the scenes in which they had to interact.

I’ve watched most of Audrey Hepburn’s movies, reviewed a good amount of them and can say that this isn’t her worst effort - “Love in the Afternoon” (1957), for example, aged awfully. There are plenty of modern movies worse than it, as well. The movie also gets the credit of debuting the Panavision process in cinema. And there’s more: with “Green Mansions”, a love story that would have been long forgotten was immortalized by cinema.

Então aqui está, “The Whole Career: Audrey Hepburn”.

To finish this post, something different: when I started exploring YouTube, many years ago, I did a couple of videos showcasing the entire career of some of my favorite stars. I’ve always wanted to make one for Audrey Hepburn. This week I found the time and reason to do it. So here it is, “The Whole Career: Audrey Hepburn”. Let’s only hope I don’t wait 15 years to make another of these videos!

Caminhando Sob a Chuva de Primavera (1970) / A Walk in the Spring Rain (1970)

When two cinema icons meet, Magic can happen. We’re not talking about the “all-star movie”, but the simple encounter of two celebrated performers. Like when three-time Oscar winner Ingrid Bergman (then with only two awards under her belt) met the two-time Oscar winner Anthony Quinn, both nearing the end of their careers - but still as good as ever. The film was “A Walk in the Spring Rain” (1970).

College professor Roger Meredith (Fritz Weaver) and his wife Libby (Ingrid Bergman) are apparently happily married and have a daughter who wants to go back to school to become a lawyer, something her father disapproves of. Here we are: already disliking this character. The couple decides to spend a sabbatical in the mountains, so they rent a cabin managed by Will Cade (Anthony Quinn). The newly-formed trio drinks and sings songs together, Will gets them a couple of baby goats and everything seems to be alright. Until it isn’t.

In the most natural way, in a casual conversation, Will tells Libby that he loves her. He doesn’t care if it is a one-way infatuation - he’s fine even if she doesn’t love him back. The issue is that she also has feelings for him - even though they might be “unsuitable lovers”. The bigger issue is that his troublemaker son sees them together.

The plot element of having someone’s child disapproving of the relationship between his/her father or mother with someone else is common and can be found in several books, movies and soap operas. The character here who is bitter with others’ romance, Will’s son, is first shown rolling in the snow in a fistfight over a woman. It’s another character who we dislike from the start.

I laughed out loud when Libby tells Will that her husband is currently writing a book and the man asks “what for? You already have plenty”. I’ve been taking a course on writing and I know by experience that we writers are our own first readers and most severe critics. We must choose how to tell a story, sometimes a story already told before, and must judge and validate our choices all the time. To do this, we must be like Roger: avid readers.

I’ve said that we instantly hate Roger for his retrograde thoughts about his daughter going back to school after getting married and having a child. But Libby thinks the same, we learn later in the film. She thinks a woman must contribute to a marriage by being a good wife and mother, not studying or working. It’s the kind of thinking that could be expected from someone born in the 1910s - the case with both Bergman and Quinn -, clashing with the values and thoughts of the new generation, represented by the daughter (Katherine Crawford, born in 1944). But there is another reason for Libby to disapprove of her daughter’s plan: if she starts studying again, Libby will have to take full-time care of her grandson, and she wants to be free, not a caretaker. The plot thickens.

The musicians responsible for the title song were Elmer Bernstein - not related to Leonard Bernstein, though they were friends - and Don Black. Bernstein’s career spanned five decades and he wrote nearly 200 movie and TV soundtracks. By 1970 he was already an Oscar winner, for the delightful and underrated musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” (1967). Don Black, who by 1970 had written theme songs for three 007 movies and the western “True Grit” (1969), worked closely on musical theatre with Andrew Lloyd Weber.

Bergman and Quinn had already starred together in 1964’s “The Visit”, and it’s only because of their talents that “A Walk in the Spring Rain” escapes from being a forgettable melodrama. The romance is nice, the danger, tangible, and the quasi-feminist discourse, basically wasted. But it’s a film worth watching, thanks to Anthony Quinn and, especially, the amazing Ingrid Bergman.

One of the most romantic movies of all times and the favorite movie of the great Gene Wilder, “Random Harvest” has been on my radar for quite some time. With my 2024 New Year Resolutions, I finally watched it for the first time - and had a blast! It’s really a touching movie, one that plays with our emotions without us getting upset and makes us swoon in many occasions.

Autumn, 1918. Smith (Ronald Colman) is staying in an asylum in England, because he lost his memory during the war and developed a speech issue. On Armistice Day, he goes to the streets and meets the artist Paula (Greer Garson). The owner of the theater group Paula works with doesn’t accept Smith, afraid that he is a dangerous lunatic. Paula and Smith leave for the countryside.

The courtship is brief and they are married. Smith gets a job writing for a newspaper and the couple has a son, named “John” after the father. Everything is fine, until Smith is hit by a car… and recovers his memory. He forgets all about Paula and Little Johnny and goes back to his old mansion, where he finds out his father has died and he, Charles Rainier, inherited the place. Rainier becomes “The Industrial Prince” and, after seeing his picture in the newspaper, Paula becomes his secretary, under the name Miss Hanson. She’s waiting for him to remember their years together, but the only thing that is happening is that he’s getting married to another woman, Kitty (Susan Peters). Will he remember it all before it’s too late?

In 1942 Greer Garson appeared in two films, this one and “Mrs. Miniver”, for which she won a Best Actress Oscar. Born in London, Garson had started her career on stage in 1932 and made her first Hollywood movie in 1939. “Mrs. Miniver” didn’t give her only an Oscar, but also a husband: in 1943 she married Richard Ney, who was 12 years her junior and had played her son in the movie. The marriage lasted four years and Ney abandoned cinema in the 1960s. Garson worked until the late 1970s on both film and TV.

Ronald Colman would win his Oscar five years later, even though he was nominated for one for “Random Harvest”. Born in England like Garson, he appeared in his first play in 1914, aged 23. Like his character Smithy, he fought in World War I and was wounded in battle. He returned to the stage and made his first short film in England in 1917. His Hollywood debut in 1923, “The White Sister”, made him a star overnight and from then on he appeared in 61 films and TV shows, until his last performance in “The Story of Mankind” (1957).

One performer to highlight is Susan Peters. Her career in film had started in 1940 and for “Random Harvest” she received her only Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category. Her mentor, George Cukor, said she reminded him of a young Katharine Hepburn. Unfortunately, her life was cut short by a tragedy: on New Year’s Day of 1945, she suffered an accident while hunting and was left paraplegic. She received and refused several scripts from MGM, not wanting to play paralyzed heroines. She made a comeback in 1948 in the role of a villain, but her health declined as she started starving herself. Peters died in 1952, aged 31. Greer Garson and Ronald Colman were among those who attended her funeral.

Director Mervin LeRoy was born in San Francisco in 1900, survived with his father the 1906 earthquake in the city, and appeared on vaudeville as a Chaplin impersonator. At 19, he experienced working on cinema for the first time, and became intrigued by the whole modus operandi. He would appear in 11 films as an actor between 1922 and 1946. He worked folding costumes, as a lab technician, assistant cameraman and gag man before directing his first film in 1927. His most successful period was the 1930s, when he worked for Warner Bros, but he directed until 1968.

A film full of surprises, from start to finish, “Random Harvest” is truly a gem. Its end scene reminds us of another teary famous ending: Chaplin’s “City Lights” (1931). Appearing as the 36th film in the AFI list of Most Romantic films of all time, “Random Harvest” is more than a film: is an experience that plays with all we think we know about love.

O Ponteiro da Saudade (1945) / The Clock (1945)

She was twenty-three and in love when the opportunity arrived to show that she was more than a pretty face with a marvelous voice. We are talking about Judy Garland and her 1945 romantic movie “The Clock”.

Joe Allen (Robert Walker) is a soldier during his two-day leave in New York. He hasn’t left the Pennsylvania Station when Alice (Judy Garland) stumbles upon him and breaks the heel in her shoe. You know, it’s just the cutest of all meet-cutes. He helps her repair the shoe, and the two hang out that Sunday afternoon, going to the Central Park Zoo and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They agree to meet again that night.

Alice’s flatmate Helen (Ruth Brady) is less than thrilled when she hears that Alice met a soldier and is going out with him. Helen almost convinces Alice to never see Joe again, but the girl’s heart speaks louder and they go on an adventure together.

O musical original “On the Town” estreou na Broadway em 1944.

If the premise of this movie sounds familiar, it’s because you’re a classic film fan. It indeed shares similarities with the 1949 musical movie “On the Town”, that has three sailors on a two-day leave enjoying life and love in New York. The original musical “On the Town” opened on Broadway in 1944.

“The Clock” is based on a story by Paul and Pauline Gallico. The duo with an auspicious name sold their unpublished story to producer Arthur Freed, who knew Judy Garland was looking for a more dramatic role to play, and showed her the story. She shot some scenes with director Fred Zinnemann but wasn’t happy with the results. She then asked for Vincente Minnelli to direct the movie, and throughout filming their romance blossomed. They got married after the film wrapped.

Stealing the scene exactly halfway through the movie as an inconvenient drunk – in a scene recorded in an impressive countinuous shot – we have Keenan Wynn. A prolific character actor, Wynn was born in New York City in 1916, the son of a vaudeville actor, Ed Wynn. As a contract player on MGM in the 1940s and 1950s and later as a TV guest star, he appeared in almost 300 productions.

Both leads of “The Clock” had tragically short lives. Robert Walker had learned, just before the shooting of this film started, that his wife Jennifer Jones was leaving him to marry producer David O. Selznick. Walker drank to forget his sorrows and it wasn’t rare for Judy Garland to find him drunk at night in a bar near the studio. He would die in 1951, aged 32. During filming “The Clock”, Garland got more and more addicted to the prescription drugs she was given by the studio to keep her figure. She would die in 1969, aged 47.

Some plot points wouldn’t make sense today, now that almost everybody has a smartphone. The device would help Alice tell Joe that she would be late for their encounter under the clock on the Astor Hotel, and the whole problem of the two separated in the subway could be solved with an exchange of text messages.

Os Três Xarás (1951) / Three Guys Named Mike (1951)

Here’s something we don’t see a lot of anymore: girls wanting to become flight attendants. In the past, it was one of the most dreamed-about careers for girls and young women – that is, until they got married and retired for family life. There was a certain glamour in flying and helping people feel comfortable in the air. In the 1950s, being a flight attendant was a dream for many, including from the lead of “Three Guys Named Mike” (1951) – and it was because of flying that she got to know the three Mikes who would change her life.

Marcy Lewis (Jane Wyman) leaves her hometown to go to Chicago to become a stewardess. Her studies go smooth, the real adventures begin when she starts flying. On the way to her first flight ever, her cab breaks on the road and she takes a lift with Mike Jamison (Howard Keel), who doesn’t tell her he’s an airplane pilot. Without knowing his real profession, while making small talk Marcy tells him that stewardesses are the most important in a flight, because pilots are “only chauffeurs”. They meet again inside the plane.

Marcy’s first flight is a disaster. Not only she doesn’t get along with Mike Jamison, but she also forgets to furnish the plane with food and they have to go back to fetch the food. Luckily, Marcy is not fired and starts flying constantly alongside Jamison, developing camaraderie with him. That’s why Jamison gets sad when Marcy is assigned for a new route, Chicago-Los Angeles, and reunited with a friend from stewardess school.

In her new route, Marcy meets Mike Lawrence (Van Johnson) and with him she helps a little girl who can’t sleep during the flight. Marcy’s friend believes Lawrence is a “VIP”, but he actually is scientist with a side job as a bartender, who Marcy meets again at a restaurant. Now, with three of her friends, Marcy decides to rent a house in Los Angeles. Enters Mike Tracy (Barry Sullivan), an advertisement man who helps Marcy on the road (again a car issue) and later meets her at the airport.

The three Mikes meet when they help Marcy with the moving. The confusion and jealousy is instantaneous. And things definetely don’t get any easier when Marcy gets involved in one of Mike Tracy’s advertising campaign after having a brilliant idea.

Stewardesses – or flight attendants, as they are known now – have to deal with many issues. They have to make sure that everybody was comfortable inside the plane, sometimes dealing with a scared child (or adult!) or a nervous flier. They have to be always calm and polite, even when there is something wrong with the plane. They also have to deal with passengers hitting on them, something that is shown in “Three Guys Named Mike” as a joke, but this “joke” can be quite unpleasant.

A surprise in the opening credits: who wrote the screenplay was Sidney Sheldon, who would become a famous novelist in the following decades, based on a story by Ruth Brooks Flippen. This is Ruth’s first writing credit, and she would go on to have a long career on television, writing for shows such as “Gidget”, “Bewitched” and “The Brady Bunch”. Ruth’s story, in turn, was based on a suggestion made by real-life stewardess Ethel Wells.

I have to confess that, from the three Mikes, I was rooting for the one played by Van Johnson. What really got me was his speech about teaching: how teaching is the closest from immortality that you can get, how a simple thing you say in a class might change someone’s life forever. As the daughter of a teacher and someone whose life was changed by a few teachers, I can say that his whole speech is true, and very romantic as well. Of course, Mike Jamison also has a good speech, about how he doesn’t want to miss a thing in life, but Mike Lawrence’s touches me deeper.

“Three Guys Named Mike” is a funny movie, perfect for a lazy weekend or evening. It almost made me dream about being a flight attendant! It also reminded me, in moments, of one of my favorite TV shows, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”, where a girl has three potential lovers. Marcy may not have Rebecca Bunch’s chaotic energy, and it’s a film from the 1950s, which means that in the end Marcy will have to choose one of the three Mikes. I’m glad we, the audience, don’t have to choose.
