Resenha / Book review: La Decisión de Grace Kelly, by Sophie Benedict

My favorite part of the day is when I can relax and sit back with a good book. When the reading is social, better yet. Let me explain: I call “social reading” what I do with my mom. She’s learning Spanish and we read together, so I can improve my knowledge in the language and teach her – who was herself a teacher for 38 years – a few things. We already read short stories by Gabriel García Márquez and the latest book we read was the Spanish version of a German novel about Grace Kelly.

Grace Kelly was on the spotlight for most of her life. First, she was one of the most talked about actresses of the 1950s, even winning an Oscar in a polemic choice for the film “The Country Girl” (1954). Then she became a literal princess when she got married to Rainier of Monaco. The wedding was highlighted in newspapers around the world, as I once noted in a blog post about the royal wedding in Brazilian newspapers. But her times studying to become an actress weren’t the focus of deeper investigation. Because of it, this period in her life could become the starting point for a speculative novel.

We are introduced to a young Grace who loves to play theater and become someone else in her childish plays. At 17, her uncle George – a Pulitzer Prize winner – convinces Grace’s father to let her go to New York. There she is accepted to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, despite her nasal voice. Her teacher, Mr Jehlinger, even complains about her voice in their first class.

Grace becomes close friends to two girls who also live at the Barbizon building: Mary Jo and Caitriona, or Cai. There is a subplot about Grace helping Cai with an abortion, but nothing too scandalous or shocking – in the end, it isn’t clear if Cai went to a doctor to perform the abortion or if she had a miscarriage. Mary Jo on the other hand introduces Grace to teacher Don Richardson, who becomes her crush… and first of many older men she dates.

Sixty percent of the book is spent telling her adventures as a model and aspiring actress in New York. Hitting the 60% mark brings the narrative to Hollywood – actually Grace went back and forth between Hollywood and New York – and the best known part of her career. There, she learns a lot with Hitchcock, an exigent director who quickly clicks with his new leading lady. Everything she does in Hollywood is done with the goal to impress her parents, who disapprove of her career choice.

In many occasions a character advises Grace to stop pursuing her dream of becoming an actress and find a husband who can support her. Time and again Grace says she wants to be independent and not rely on any man. Her dream is to get married to a man she genuinely loves. And she has many relationships based not on true love, just physical attraction.

Surprise, surprise: the author imagines an encounter between Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe, then called Norma Jean and working as a model in New York. Norma gives the younger Grace advice about acting and accepting offers – she says it’s necessary to know when to say “no”, but shows that this is easier said than done. Another encounter is with Marlon Brando, who comes across as a gum-chewing unpleasant brat at Edith van Cleve’s office. Edith was a real theatrical agent for young and upcoming actors. Brando, an unknown like Grace, is bothered that he has to wait for Edith to see Kelly before his appointment.

The original title is “Grace und die Anmut der Liebe”, that can be translated as “Grace and the Grace of Love”. It was written by Sophie Benedict, the pseudonym of German author Steffi von Wolff from Frankfurt. Grace Kelly is her favorite actress and the author chose to pay a tribute to her through this book – but it achieved mixed results, in my opinion.

If I was a member of Grace’s family, I wouldn’t be happy with her portrayal in the novel. Grace is presented as frivolous and obsessed, having affairs with all older men she gets to work with. Yes, she is portrayed as someone who does everything perfectly, and this may please her fans, who are the target for the book. My mother almost gave up on reading, but we reached the end in time to celebrate what would be Grace’s 95th birthday. Happy birthday, sweet princess – you are still loved and remembered.

Entrevistando Grace Kelly / Grace Kelly interviewed

Grace Kelly was one of the most famous people of the 20th century. Thousands of photos were taken of her, hundreds of articles were written about her, her life and her films. In newspapers and magazines all over the world, there were speculations about her love life, her style, her upcoming film projects, then the preparations for her wedding with Prince Rainer of Monaco and more speculations about whether or not she would go back to Hollywood. But it was only once in a while that Grace herself sat with journalists and answered their questions.

One of the most popular magazines of the 20th century in Brazil was called “O Cruzeiro”. It was published weekly between 1928 and 1985, and it dealt with several subjects, including cinema. The magazine even had several foreign correspondents writing directly from the US and Europe.

Those correspondents were not always kind to the movie stars – on December 4th 1954, for instance, a correspondent called Álvares da Silva was strong in his criticism of Grace Kelly, saying she had “too much water and too little sugar”, that is, that she had neither talent nor appeal. The author also says that Hollywood was trying to turn Grace into a new Ingrid Bergman.

But not all journalists are hard to Grace Kelly. In 1955, she was mentioned several times in “O Cruzeiro”. Grace had just been named the most popular actress in the world by foreign correspondents, and won a trophy called “the Henrietta”. One journalist writes a long article comparing Grace and Gina Lollobrigida, and can’t reach a verdict about which one is prettier.

Grace also appears in 10th in a list of best dressed women of 1955. Curiously, tied with her there is Queen Frederica from Greece, and the magazine says: “a real queen ties in elegance with a fake queen”. Little did they know that Grace would become a real princess! In 1956, Grace was voted as the most elegant woman in the world.

Later in 1955 journalist Pedro Lima was indiscreet and wrote about all affairs Grace was said to have had in Hollywood. He says that, “without being really beautiful”, Grace was involved in several love triangles. Yes, the magazine was full of gossip and criticism!

Fortunately, there were some more professional journalists writing for “O Cruzeiro” as well. The most famous Brazilian correspondent in Hollywood was Dulce Damasceno de Brito, and she preferred to meet the stars before repeating gossip. She starts her article about Grace Kelly saying that she and Marilyn were the most popular actresses of the year – but there couldn’t be a comparison, because they were completely different.

Then, Dulce shares some thoughts Grace had during the filming of “The Country Girl” (1954): “[…] I confess that I was afraid of the responsibility to replace Jennifer [Jones, who had to abandon the project when she got pregnant], mainly because Paramount insisted so much so Metro could lend me… And I was afraid of disappoint them. I spent nights awake studying the role”.

Finally Dulce asks her about the night she won her Oscar. Grace confesses: “I could never explain the emotion of receiving an Oscar. We feel like laughing, crying, screaming… and like standing still, letting only the tears go down our face! I could never imagine such a feeling. Only by going through it you can evaluate the huge value of that statue!”

Dulce then telling the reader that Grace speaks softly and is sweet, and sometimes looks like a teenager talking happily about school. The subject changes to Grace’s first film role: “I got this bit role in a film after I had been in 70 TV plays in New York!” Dulce then talks a little about Grace’s love life and how she was then being seen with stylist Oleg Cassini. Dulce ends the interview saying that the sweet Grace Kelly was leaving for Cannes.

Dulce interviewed Grace a second and final time when she was about to get married and leave Hollywood. In this occasion, among other things, Dulce asked Grace when exactly she fell in love with Rainer. She answered: “Exactly on Christmas Day, 1955, at my parents’ house, in Philadelphia. It was kind of love at second sight”.

She also asked Grace if she wanted to go on with her film career. The answer was: “No. The same way that I have immensely dedicated myself to the artistic career because of a calling, I intend to dedicate myself, body and soul, to the social and Estate duties a princess has, as I claim this position with true love”.

After Grace’s wedding with Prince Rainer of Monaco, she kept on being a subject in the magazine. A 1956 article speculated if she was pregnant with twins. Another article claims that Grace’s love story was a real rags to riches tale, because her father was a bricklayer – which he definitely wasn’t. There are, at total, 179 mentions to Grace Kelly in the “O Cruzeiro” magazine.

Grace also appeared at the “O Cruzeiro” magazine in an ad for soap – you can see it below – and she was on the cover of the magazine as well. As one of the most recognizable faces of the 20th century, Grace Kelly was a constant presence in magazines all over the world.

Grace Kelly: a Royal Wedding in the press

It does matter where we live or if we support the monarchy. Whenever a member of a royal family – in special the English royal family – gets married, we pay attention to the event. Some people may be 100% invested in the wedding, watching it live on TV and looking for souvenirs online. Others may just be curious, and take a look at the fashion choices of the guests. We all love royal weddings because they are the closest thing from fairytales we have.

So, there is no doubt if “the wedding of the 20th century” was a royal one. The problem is that we have two strong contenders for “the wedding of the 20th century”: Grace Kelly’s wedding to Prince Rainer III of Monaco and the wedding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer. Today we’ll talk about Grace Kelly’s wedding.

On April 19th 1956, what took place was more than a simple royal wedding: it was the union of a member of the Old Europe royalty, a prince, with a member of the New World new royalty, a movie superstar. There had never been anything like that – I mean, yes, Rita Hayworth was married to a prince before Grace Kelly, but her husband was a UN Ambassador and the son of a Pakistanis Sultan, which is not in the same status as European royalty.

So, Grace Kelly’s engagement, the preparations and of course the wedding made headlines in newspapers and magazines all over the world. Let’s take a look of how the press covered the events:

Today we have Lifetime Movies to tell us, with the use of unknown actors, how William and Kate or Harry and Meghan met, but in 1956 there was another way to tell the beginning of the fairytale: very long and detailed magazine articles.

Photoplay magazine ran two articles about Rainier and Kelly’s meeting and courtship. In the longest article, written by Ruth Waterbury, both are described as very independent people – the prince, for example, only wanted to marry for love. They first met in a brief photo shoot for the magazine Paris Match in Cannes. Then the magazine chronicles all of Grace Kelly’s loves and gossips in Hollywood, to end up where the article began: the announcement of the engagement.

When Grace met Rainier for the Paris Match shoot

The other article on Photoplay was written by Helen Bolstad. It’s basically the same content, about Rainier’s and Kelly’s past until the engagement. This article has many more images.

The Brazilian newspaper Diário de Notícias do Rio de Janeiro (or News Diary) talks about the wedding preparations. It says Grace woke up at 8 am at the palace, went to the Mass and oversaw the preparations all morning long. The reporters look for news to write about in the palace gardens, while the Guard parades.

And the newspaper Tribuna da Imprensa (or Press Tribune) decided to write briefly about the reverend that would officiate the wedding:

The American Motion Picture Herald talks about plans to produce TV specials about the wedding and how the event postponed the Cannes film festival that year:

Another Brazilian newspaper, A Noite (or The Night) published this photo of Grace and Rainer after the civil ceremony and talked about the cake they served the guests:

Finally, this newspaper called O Dia do Paraná (or The Day, from the state of Paraná) talked about the possibility of Grace Kelly keeping on making films – her father said she was still thinking about it – while she was on her honeymoon on a yacht. Prince Rainier III didn’t like the idea of his wife going back to Hollywood – and in fact she didn’t.

The wedding was also the subject of a Pathé newsreel – seen below – and a 30-minute MGM special. But this is subject for another time…

Grace Kelly: style icon

We can't deny that the fashion world and the movie world walk side by side since, at least, the 1920s. If we had to choose one film star to exemplify the relationship between fashion and film, most people would point out Audrey Hepburn. I understand them: Audrey's partnership with Givenchy was iconic and some of her movies dealt with the fashion world. But I'd like to disagree with most people: in my opinion, Grace Kelly and fashion tendencies also waked hand in hand.

Grace modeled for the first time in a beneficent event at the school she attended. Her mother and sisters were also part of the fashion show. When Grace went on to pursue a career in acting, she started also working as a model, and did it for three years.

Grace started with TV roles. Her first film role, in “Fourteen Hours” (1951), is very brief. The one that followed, in “High Noon” (1952), was also brief, but fundamental to the plot. Ann Peck, a western expert, was responsible for the female outfits in the film.

Nobody dressed Grace Kelly better than Edith Head. Their fashion partnership lasted four films, one Oscar ceremony and a farewell trip. One of the most fascinating images of Grace Kelly was made even more breathtaking by the dress she wears. When L.B. Jeffries (James Stewart) opens his eyes, he finds his angelic fiancée, Lisa Fremont (Kelly) right in front of him, wearing a black and white dress. The film is “Rear Window” (1954), and this was the first time many of us were bewitched by Grace Kelly.

Their next collaboration was in “The Bridges at Toko-Ri”, a 1954 movie that has too little of Grace Kelly and not enough action – only in the final minutes. Grace is in the film only to walk with Head’s glamorous creations. The film that followed, however, was good for both: with “The Country Girl” (1954), Grace Kelly won the Best Actress Oscar and at the night of the ceremony she received her prize while wearing a dress designed by Edith Head – a dress very different from the simple clothes her character wears in the film. In a daring decision, Grace reused the dress with which she had attended the premiere of the film.
The Bridges at Toko-Ri (1954)
The Country Girl (1954)

“To Catch a Thief” (1955) is without a doubt the film in which Grace Kelly wears the most beautiful clothes. As a very rich woman who may be the next victim of a jewel robber, she can show off gorgeous dresses in the French Riviera setting. Her beauty and her outfits can even make you stop looking at Cary Grant's glorious chin and, well, pay attention to her.

The suit Grace Kelly was wearing when she left Hollywood for good was also designed by Edith Head, as a farewell gift from Paramount studios. Ironically, none of Edith Head’s eight Oscar wins was from a film starring Grace Kelly.

Grace Kelly's iconic wedding dress wasn't designed by Edith Head. Helen Rose, who was responsible for Grace’s outfits in many films – “Mogambo” (1953), “Green Fire” (1954), “High Society” (1956) and “The Swan” (also 1956) – was chosen to design both wedding dresses for Grace: one for the civil ceremony and one for church. Instead of a tiara, she chose to wear a beret-style hat. The wedding was the biggest fashion event of 1956.

After her marriage, Grace stayed away from Hollywood, but not from the fashion world. She started wearing European haute culture and a favorite handbag that according to the legend was used to cover up her first pregnancy. The big Hermès handbag she used became known as the “Kelly bag”.

Grace Kelly died more than 35 years ago, but her style is still remembered. In 2012, she was among the 100 most influential fashion icons since 1923 picked by TIME magazine. And, if we think about a perfect fancy 1950s look, we’ll probably think about something worn by Grace Kelly.
