Não quero ser um homem (1918) / I don’t want to be a man (1918)

A primeira que me vem à mente é Klaus Kinski / Werner Herzog. Sim, AQUELE Ernst Lubitsch.

There are many great director / performer partnerships in film, all over the world. For instance, can you mention a famous actor/director duo in German cinema? The first one that comes to mind is Klaus Kinski / Werne Herzog. How about an actress/director duo in German cinema? I’m about to introduce you a duo that came much earlier – and was much funnier: Ossi Oswalda and Ernst Lubitsch. Yes, THAT Lubitsch.

Lubitsch was born in 1892 in Berlin. He made his first movie as an actor in 1912 and directed his first feature in 1914. Nine years later, he was in Hollywood, hand-picked by Mary Pickford herself. Part of his success came by directing the charismatic and incredibly popular Ossi Oswalda. One of the films they did together was “I don’t want to be man” (1918), presented as ‘a comedy in three acts by Ernst Lubitsch’.

Young Ossi (Ossi Oswalda) can’t do anything fun. She can’t play poker with the guys. If she smokes, she is reprimanded by her governess (Margarete Kupfer), an old woman who enjoys smoking. If she drinks, she is reprimanded by her uncle, an old man who enjoys drinking. She also can’t go out to chat with the guys. Hypocrisy doesn’t let young Ossi have fun.

So, when her uncle has to go on a ship trip, Ossi becomes ecstatic, thinking she’ll finally be free. But her dreams of freedom shipwreck with the arrival of a strict guardian, Dr. Kersten (Curt Goetz), who will put her “in her place”. Ossi realizes there is only one way to be free: to pretend she is a guy.

She buys a suit, completes her disguise with top hat, a wig, a monocle and a cane, and goes conquer the world. She starts by making a fool of the governess, who blushes as Ossi kisses her hand, and then saying: “what a nice fellow!”.

Now Ossi can smoke, drink, look at girls’ behinds… and she is considered cute by the girls in a ball because they think she is a very short man. She also has problems: she has to ride the subway standing up, because she must give her seat to the ladies; she is almost crushed inside a crowd of men much higher than her and, of course, she has to use the male bathroom while drunk.

At the ball, Ossi sees her guardian and starts flirting with the woman who is accompanying him. When the woman leaves them both for a third man, Ossi and the guardian start chatting, smoking and drinking bottles and bottles of champagne, even making a toast to “the bros”. The consequences of their drinking night are unexpected and delightful.

Ossi Oswalda is commonly referred as “the German Mary Pickford”. Five years younger than the original Mary Pickford (IMDb is the only place where it is written she was born in 1899), Ossi was a ballerina who was invited b Lubitsch to appear in movies. She was extremely popular in the late 1910s and early 1920s – being “The Doll”, from 1919, the best film from herb collaboration with Lubitsch. After she made her last film, in 1933, Ossi, her family and her Jewish boyfriend fled the now Nazi Germany and went to live in Czechoslovakia, where Ossi died at age 50.

In 1908 Sigmund Freud wrote for the first time about his theory of the penis envy – something important during the child’s development. The theory was then stretched to refer to women who felt jealous of all freedom men have – a freedom denied to women. Although by 1918 this stretching was not yet made, Ossi for sure is jealous of how men can do more things and live more freely than women.

It’s interesting noticing that, even it is hinted, the goal of the movie is not to show how men have a much harder life. Ossi does suffer a little when she is dressed as a man, but not to the point to believing that women have an “easier” – yet more restricted – life than men.

Dressing as another gender is something common in film – I’ve written  about it HERE – and dealing with the differences between men and women is also common – the first film that had both cross-dressing and gender debate was Alice Guy’s “The Consequences of Feminism”, from 1906. Ernst Lubitsch, both writer and director of “I don’t want to be a man”, chose a funny way to deal with the subjects. But here “funny” doesn’t mean “safe”: the film can be considered queer and groundbreaking, because the guardian and Ossi-as-male do kiss when they are drunk, and they don’t regret it later. Ossi also flirts with both men and women.

“I don’t want to be a man / Ich möchte kein Mann sein” is only 45 minutes long and it showed me that my German lessons were worthwhile – by the way, I wrote about Ossi Oswalda in the first time I had no mistakes writing an essay in German. Besides that, it is a daring movie that even today, 100 years ago, Hollywood wouldn’t have the guts to make. And it stars Ossi Oswalda when she was shining the brightest.

Resoluções cinematográficas 2016 – Resultados

2016 film resolutions - Results

The 2015 film resolutions were only completed in the first days of 2016, but the ones from 2016 were completed in time – in the last minute, to be fair. Yes, once again I left most films to be seen in December, and I had to hurry to end the list on the 31st. But I had good surprises, with prophetical films, some very modern ones, and the ones that already entered my list of all-time favorites. Let's discover a little bit about them:

Leia a crítica completa AQUI.

Die Puppe (1919): This lovely film with Ossi Oswalda, directed by Ernst Lubitsch, tells the story of a rich and spoiled young man who decides to marry a doll to stop being harassed by women. The issue is that the doll he chooses is actually made of flesh and bone. Sounds complicated? Read the review HERE.

The Threepenny opera (1931): Drama, musical and a little bit of comedy are put together to tell the story of Mackie Messer (Rudolf Forster), a common criminal who marries the daughter of an owner of a begging business in London.

Three on a Match (1932): Ann Dvorak is here almost – almost – as good as she was in “Scarface”. Above all, this short pre-Code is a cautionary tale about women who think about seeking happiness outside the sacred institution of marriage. Full review HERE.

Stella Dallas (1937): Barbara Stanwyck proves thst a mother can do anything, anything at all, to see her daughter happy – even if the daughter doesn't appreciate the sacrifices her mother makes. Watch it with tissues near you.

La Belle et La Bête (1946): In Jean Cocteau's version, Belle (Josete Day) has even evil sisters and a proto-Gaston after her, but pay attention to the magic and nearly scaring Beast's (Jean Marais) castle. It's an aesthetically perfect movie.

A Matter of Life and Death (1946): Sometimes the grim reaper makes a mistake, and the one about to be dead ends up living. But hat if love blossoms before the mistake is erased? Read the review of this wonderful film, one of the best I've seen in 2016, HERE.

Rififi (1955): The great French heist film was directed by Jules Dassin, who also plays Cesare, with a tiny budget. You must already imagine that the moral of the story is that crime does not pay, but you'll still be speechless with the tense and long heist sequence – totally silent 20 minutes.

3:10 to Yuma (1957): A tense western, about a race against time just like in “High Noon” (1952). Glenn Ford, playing againsy type, and Van Heflin are outlaw and good guy, one waiting to be rescued by his gang, the other working to collect a reward.

The Hidden Fortress (1958): The film that may have taken “Rashomon” (1950) away from the top of my favorite Kurosawa's film list. Two cowards and a general (Toshiro Mifune) go to rescue a princess and tke her safely until an alied clan's territory. Does it sound familiar? Yes, this film was a big – huge – influence to George when he created Star Wars (1977).
Sob o Domínio do Mal (1962): Lutas políticas, fraudes, lavagem cerebral, trauma.

The Manchurian Candidate (1962): Poilitical disputes, brain washing, trauma. 55 years later, the themes in “The Manchurian Candidate” are more modern than ever. Frank Sinatra stars as the former soldier who finds out that his old boss was hipnotized and is being used to help elect his stepfather president. This sounds familar, doesn't it?

Jules et Jim (1962): Jules (Oskar Werner) and Jim (Henri Serre) are best friends from different countries and the First World War is about to begin. As if  it was not enough, they meet Catherine (Jeanne Moreau), a free and outspoken woman who will enter both their minds and hearts.

THX 1138 (1971): Science fiction can, sometimes, give us a bitter perception of the future or even the present. The one-color, über-controlled future shown in THX 1138 is difficult to be seen, and the main character's search for liberty is inspiring, especially considering the moment we live in.

The Doll (1919) / Die Puppe (1919)

You know you are about to see a very good movie when the first image after the credits shows you director Ernst Lubitsch taking miniature scenic objects out of a box. It wasn’t Lubitsch’s first movie: he acted since 1912 and directed since 1914. But it is a movie that makes us stop and shout: “here it is a genius”!

The rich, old and ill Baron Von Chanterelle (Max Kronert) wants his nephew to get marriage so the noble lineage won’t die. But said nephew, Lancelot (Hermann Thimig) is a cry-baby who doesn’t think of marriage at all.
Lancelot

When he is able to distract dozens of young maidens who were chasing him, Lancelot goes to a monastery to hide. The monks there have been through “difficulties”, and then they decide to convince the guest to marry and give the dowry to the monastery. And they even find a way to make Lancelot happy with the marriage: he weds a doll and fool them all!

In an add for “bachelors, widowers and misogynists”, Hilarius Gilermund (Victor Janson), the world-famous dollmaker, says that he can make a human-like doll, who also moves when some buttons are pushed. And Hilarius’s newest creation is a doll inspired by his daughter, Ossi (Ossi Oswalda).

While Lancelot goes to the store to buy his fiancée doll, Hilarius’s young and daring helper breaks Ossi the doll. To prevent him from having troubles, real Ossi promises to pretend to be the doll until the doll is fixed. But the big trouble comes when Lancelot chooses exactly Ossi to be his wife. He thinks he is taking home a doll of “solid character”, but it is the girl the one who goes in his carriage.

There is a fairy tale touch to this film. The set of the first scene is, literally, built in front of us, and something magic and child-like begins. Many decades before Disney deconstructed fairy tales, we already had a silly prince, a bold heroine, a smiling sun and horses that cross their legs and lose their tails.

There is room, of course, to find problems. We could ask ourselves if Lancelot didn’t want to get married because he simply didn’t want it, or if maybe it was because he was a closeted homosexual? And, do the monks or don’t they look to Ossi with luxury? We could ask those questions, looking with eyes of 2016, but the questions would destroy the fun, and the film is hilarious if watched with eyes of 1919.

Ossi Oswalda was called “the German Mary Pickford”. And here we see why this nickname: cute, courageous, adorable, funny, Ossi was only 22 when “The Doll” was made. She is far from being a vamp, a suffering girl or a damsel in distress. Ossi, as a doll or as a girl, is a fabulous leading lady, and without a doubt she has fun with her make-believe.

The plot is simple, but most of the jokes are ironic. That’s why one of the funniest characters is the young helper (Gerhard Ritterband), who has great ‘quotes’ and exaggerated dramatic reactions. There is also criticism against the clergy, and the constant gag involves the monks advocating the poverty vow, but at the same time overeating. This situation was already explored in several films and, in special, books from mainly Catholic countries.
Hilarius e seu ajudante / Hilarius and his helper

We rarely think about Lubitsch as a director who had a muse or top collaborator, like Griffith had Gish, George Cukor had Katharine Hepburn or William Wyler had Bette Davis. Indeed, in his Hollywood years he didn’t have constant collaborators, but in his German years it is Ossi Oswalda the one performer who personifies, perfectly, the charm we find in Lubitsch’s early masterpieces.
