It might as well be Spring (Byington)

She could be the nosy yet lovely neighbor. She could be a supporting friend. She could be a duchess or a lady – or even a servant. She could be the strong and caring matriarch – a role she played over and over, and one that the audiences adored. What else can come from someone named Spring? As the season, her screen persona was always cheerful, sometimes comic, rarely enraging. Typecasted, maybe, talented, for sure.

It may sound trite but I’m an actress strictly because I enjoy it - and because I can’t do anything else very well.

"Do Mundo Nada Se Leva / You Can't Take it With You" (1938)

Spring Dell Byington was born in 1886 in Colorado. She always loved acting and started touring with acting company in her youth. Between 1903 and 1916, she toured through South America, performing in both Spanish and Portuguese. In 1909, she married the theater company manager Roy Chandler, and had two daughters with him. They divorced in 1920.

Her first Broadway credit came when she was 28. Her first film credit, when she was 34. Maybe too old to explore new horizons? Not for Spring. In a curious coincidence, she played a mother in her first film, the short subject “Papa’s Slay Ride” (1930). Her next film role was as the March family matriarch in “Little Women” (1933).

Starting in 1936, Spring Byington starred in a series of low-budget family films with 60 minutes or less about the Jones family. The first film of a total of 17 was “Every Saturday Night”, and the last was “On their Own”, release in 1940. Byington played Mrs John Jones, while Jed Prouty played John Jones, Florence Roberts was Granny Jones and the four children were played by several different actors. Two of the Jones family movies were written by Buster Keaton.

Enough of me talking about Spring Byington. I’ll let her – or rather, the characters she played – talk for herself. Notice the humor and the warmth in the lines below:

“Now, Colonel, you’re flattering me just as dear Lord Melbourne did once when we sat next to each other at an intolerable meal call banquet. “Lady Warrenton”, he said, “you have the power to drive men mad.”” – As Lady Octavia Warrenton in “The Charge of the Light Brigade”, 1936

“Now, now. Don’t fight, children. At least until after you’re happily married” – As Aunt Ella in “It’s Love I’m After”,1937

“That’s what you always say, Mytyl, that you’re sorry. But the next day you do the same thing right over again.” – As Mummy Tyl in “The Blue Bird”, 1940

“Your heart’s always bigger than your father’s pocketbook” – As Bertha Van Cleve in “Heaven Can Wait”, 1943

“You talk as if astrology is something to be ashamed of, like witchcraft or being a Democrat.” – As Nancy Potter in “The Heavenly Body”, 1944

“Você não deve me levar a sério, senhorita. Ninguém me leva.” – Como Magda em “O Solar de Dragonwyck”, 1946

“You mustn’t take me seriously, Miss. No one ever does.” – As Magda in “Dragonwyck”, 1946

“I don’t know you as well as I did when you were a child, but you were one of the dumbest children I ever met!” – As Suzie Robinson, saying to her daughter, in “Please, don’t eat the daisies”, 1960

Spring Byington was in several B-movies and box-office failures. From 1954 to 1959, however, she starred in her own TV show, “December Bride”. The series was originated in the radio, where Spring also starred, and picked by the Desilu production company for the new medium. During the 1956-1957 season, “December Bride” was the fifth most popular show on TV.

Although she played a wife and mother so often, in a time when most women could online aspire to be wives and mothers, Spring Byington defied the expectations. Divorced at 24, she never remarried, and dedicated all her energy to her work. She was bold and wise, and I left exactly her wisest quote, from “I’ll Be Seeing You” (1944), to finish this tribute:

Somos do Amor / It's Love I'm After (1937)

Can you think about Bette Davis doing a screwball comedy? How about Olivia de Havilland and Leslie Howard? If this is hard to imagine, no problems: you can see the trio with your own eyes in “It's Love I'm After”.

Marcia West (Olivia de Havilland) is a super fan who loves Shakespearian actor Basil Underwood (Leslie Howard). This love bothers her fiancé, Henry Grant Jr (Patrick Knowles). Henry confronts Basil on New Year's Eve, and is inspired by a play Basil mentions.

Henry asks Basil to meet Marcia and make her fall out of love with the actor. Basil sees the plan as a chance to become a better person. But, for this, Basil has to postpone once more his marriage to his co-star of the stages, Joyce Arden (Bette Davis).

Pretending to be a real asshole, Basil arrives at the West house in the middle of the night, thinking it'd be enough to complete his mission. But he recognizes Marcia: she is the sweet girl who went to his dressing room after Romeo and Juliet and confessed her love and admiration for him, in the most polite way. He is sad to have to disappoint Marcia, but she is quicker and lies, telling her family she has invited him to stay for the weekend.

The following day, Basil does everything to be seen as a diva – and even uses some lines from classic plays along the way. But with each awful deed he does, Marcia gets more enchanted by him.

Nothing is sacred in screwball (see what I did here?), not even Shakespeare. In the opening sequence, Basil and Joyce are doing Romeo and Juliet's death scene. Full of animosity, they insult one another in a lower tone of voice, so the audience can't hear them. It's a hilarious scene.

In the first half, Bette Davis is practically wasted playing a woman who becomes insecure when the subject is love. Because she was disappointed so many times by Basil, now she hides her feelings and only treats him with insults. In the second half, however, she is back to the strong Bette Davis we all know and love.

Amazing character actor Eric Blore is the best as Digges, Basil's dresser and best friend. When performing scenes, he acts alongside Basil, doing even female roles and showing that he knows all the lines from several plays. Oh, and Digges is an expert on the art of packing and unpacking.

Leslie Howard is incredibly good in a comic role, and he is on the screen for most of the movie. On a negative note, we have a very young Bonita Granville playing an obnoxious child who doesn't even add to the plot. Well, not all kid actors can be funny like Virginia Weidler in “The Philadelphia Story” (1940).

We can't deny that Bette and Olivia were odd choices – even though they played their parts well, especially Olivia, who is just 21 here. I kept imagining how this film could have been better with a more solid screenplay and different duos: like, Jean Harlow as Marcia and Myrna Loy as Joyce, or Carole Lombard as Marcia and Jean Arthur as Joyce.

It's a shame that “It's Love I'm After” isn't better known. It may not be among the best screwball comedies of all times, but it is a charming farce and has a lovely performance by Olivia, a nice one by Bette, a funny one by Leslie and another unforgettable one by Eric Blore.
