Whenever I travel with my mom, she comments, in a happy tone that has nothing to do with the somber commentary: “do you see all those people here in the airport? We'll probably never see them ever again.” Indeed, we never made friends at an airport – and, considering the plot of “Phone Call from a Stranger”, it’s a good thing we never did.

Four strangers meet at the airport. David Trask (Gary Merrill) is a lawyer who has just left his wife Jane (Helen Westcott) to figure his life out in LA. Bianca Carr (Shelley Winters) is a failed actress, under the stage name of Binky Gay, going back home. It's her first time in an airplane and she's very nervous. Eddie Hoke (Keenan Wynn) is a salesman who loves to tell jokes. Robert Fortness (Michael Rennie) is a quiet doctor.

When the plane hits its first – unpredicted – stop, Dr. Fortness talks to David about some legal advice. Five years before, Dr. Fortness left a party after drinking too much and caused a car accident that killed three people, including his friend, Dr. Brooks (Hugh Beaumont), who was with him in the car. However, Dr. Fortness told the police that Dr. Brooks was the one driving the car, which was confirmed by his wife, Claire Fortness (Beatrice Straight), and since lying Dr. Fortness has been consumed by guilt. He decided to tell the police the truth and wants David to represent him in the upcoming process.

The plane takes off again, only to pass some thick clouds and crash in a forest area. Eighteen people die, and from the four new friends, only David survives. Since he got the phone numbers of all the three others, he decides to phone their families and try to offer any kind of help they need.

David will have to convince Dr. Fortness' son, Jerry (Ted Donaldson), that his father's problem with the alcohol wasn't his mother's fault – and also tell the truth about the car crash. He will also meet Binky's husband and mother-in-law, who don't know about her death yet. Her mother-in-law despises her for leaving them to try becoming a big star on her own. David may have to clean Dr. Fortness' and Binky's reputation, but he'll be surprised to learn a powerful lesson from Eddie's wife, Marie (Bette Davis). Eddie was a clown and David imagined he lived a very happy life with his beautiful wife, but this couldn’t be further to the truth.

“Phone Call from a Stranger” is a compelling drama that also offers Gary Merrill one of the few chances he had to star in such a prestigious picture. Sometimes he looks like James Mason, and although his role doesn’t demand so much, he delivers a good performance as David. This is the third and final film he did with his then wife, Bette Davis.

Bette Davis, after reading the script, actively pursued the role of Marie Hoke. Although a small one, it’s one of the most complex roles in the picture, and that’s what attracted Bette – and what makes the character stand out.

Michael Rennie, who plays Dr. Fortness, is a good yet underrated actor. Beatrice Straight, who plays Dr. Fortness’ wife, made her screen debut in “Phone Call from a Stranger”. She would win an Oscar for her brief yet powerful performance in “Network” (1978).

Shelley Winters is one of the few actresses whose career can be divided in two very clear phases. In the first phase, she played sexier characters, but with little screen time. Some movies of notice from this first phase are the great “A Double Life” (1947) and this “Phone Call from a Stranger” – in which she is first billed. She played against this type, with success, in “A Place in the Sun” (1951), and she considered this to be her best performance. In the second phase she played matronly supporting characters that often stole the picture – like in “The Diary of Anne Frank” (1959) and “Lolita” (1962).

Gary Merrill and Shelley Winters reprised their roles when “Phone Call from a Stranger” was adapted to the radio in 1953.  In 1956, the story was adapted for television under the title “Crack-Up”, and Merrill once again played David. The 1952 film put together, behind the cameras, two Hollywood greats that are not so well remembered today: director Jean Negulesco and producer / screenwriter Nunnally Johnson.

Called ‘mechanical’ and ‘unreal’ by a critic when it was released, “Phone Call from a Stranger”, even today, stands as a good drama and proof that we all impact each others’ lives, no matter if we interact with someone only for a short time. And, if you want to avoid the possibility of living something like David lives in the film, you can always do what I do at airports: read a book while waiting for your flight instead of making acquaintances.

Book review: Miss D & Me, by Kathryn Sermak and Danelle Morton

Sometimes I wonder how some classic film stars were in their private lives. Some are easy to imagine, to pinpoint which were shy and which were outgoing thanks to their film persona. Some were a mystery to me. Bette Davis was one of those mysteries. She often portrayed strong leading ladies on screen, and at the same time there are sweet pictures of her in moments of rest. I couldn’t imagine if she was strong and exigent in her private life or sweet and laid back. Now, thanks to the amazing book “Miss D & Me”, I could learn that Bette was, at the same time, both strong and sweet.

“Miss D & Me” was written by Kathryn Sermak, Bette Davis’ personal assistant in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Kathryn was also with Bette when the star suffered a near fatal stroke in 1983, and was the only person present in the hospital room when Bette passed away in 1989. More than an employee, Kathryn became a friend and a confident. She saw the good, the bad and the ugly of Bette Davis’ life, and with all due respect shared those memories with us.

Bette and Kathryn

Kathryn’s memory is admirable. Even though she says she kept notes of her days working with Bette, her attention to detail and ability to remember little things that happened decades ago impressed me. Those details also were what interested and amazed me the most – like how Bette Davis used to rearrange the furniture in hotel rooms and add photos and knickknacks she would bring from her house to make the place feel like home.

I got to have different perceptions of Bette Davis through the book. I imagine, now, that she was very suspicious and insecure, as she forbade Kathryn from talking to anything “lesser than her” on set, and also to household people such as the maid or the driver, afraid that those people were asking about her and collecting info to sell to tabloids. She certainly did this because of previous bad experiences. She learned with time to not trust anyone if you’re a film star.

Kathryn describes Bette as a perfectionist. Kathryn had to be meek and learn through mistakes in his first years with Bette, and accept a lot of criticism. Bette decided to shape her just as she had been shaped by Warner Brothers when she arrived in Hollywood. Bette changed Kathryn’s name (it was originally Catherine), her wardrobe, her hair and in special her manners. It was frustrating to Kathryn in many occasions, but she writes about how grateful she is until today for the lessons.

In 1983, Bette Davis underwent a mastectomy and later had a stroke that nearly killed her. During her recovery, both in the hospital and out of it, Kathryn is by her side, using all she had learned to take the best care possible of her dear Miss D. By the way, “Miss D” was how she addressed Bette, a cute nickname they both agreed on when Bette advised Kathryn to change her name.

You must be aware of “Mommie Dearest”, the book Joan Crawford’s daughter wrote about Joan, but Bette’s only biological daughter, Barbara ‘Bede’  (B.D.) Merrill, also wrote a defamatory book about her mother. As narrated by Kathryn, she probably decided to write the book after Bette’s stroke, when doctors gave the film star only three weeks to live. Bette recovered, but was left broken-hearted when she was informed about the book. Bede had became a religious fanatic, sold her farm and moved with her family to the Bahamas without telling Bette, so the book was only the icing of the cake of Bette’s disappointment. Even though Kathryn writes that “Bede and Miss D clearly loved each other”, the greed and Bede’s new religion were more powerful than the motherly love.
Bette and Bede

Bette certainly loved her family, and that included her two adoptive children. Kathryn spends a chapter narrating a particularly difficult Fourth of July holiday on Bette’s house, when the whole family was reunited. Near her loved ones, Bette Davis was more insecure and hesitant, as Kathryn says: “Only if she was perfect would she feel worthy of their love.”

Bette's family

There isn’t a lot about Bette’s work in the book, as in the period starting in 1979 she did films for TV or played minor roles in features. I missed more info on those gigs. I’d love to have read, for instance, how the shooting of “Right of Way” went, as it was the only time Bette worked with James Stewart. I also wanted to know if Bette and Lillian Gish were friendly towards each other during the shooting of “The Whales of August”, Bette’s last film.

Kathryn says that Miss D and she had been employer and employee, mentor and protégé, mother and daughter, until they became best friends. The book starts and climaxes with their road trip through France in 1985. It’s a little adventure, a heart-warming one to be read. Indeed, “heart-warming” is a great word to describe the book “Miss D & Me”.

I’d like to thank Raquel and Hachette Books for this book that I won in a giveaway. This post is part of Raquel’s Summer Reading Classic Film Book Challenge.

O Estranho Caso do Conde (1959) / The Scapegoat (1959)

Whenever we hear the name Daphne du Maurier, we instantly think about Hitchcock as her link with cinema. Indeed, Hitchcock adapted Du Maurier's most famous works to the screen: “Rebecca” (1940) and “The Birds” (1963) – and, before that, “Jamaica Inn” (1939). But Daphne Du Maurier wrote other works that were adapted to film. One of them was the thriller “The Scapegoat”, that became a 1959 movie starring Alec Guinness and Bette Davis.

A man called John Barratt (Alec Guinness) arrives in England. He is feeling empty and hopeless. Strangely, many people seem to know him, but he seems to know no one. The explanation is quite simple: John has a doppelgänger – a person who looks exactly like another person. This doppelgänger is Jacque De Gue (also Alec Guinness), a nobleman whose life is the opposite of John's. One night, they two meet and Jacque puts sleeping powder in John's drink. Now John must be in Jacque's place.

Although he is confused and mad, John treats Jacque's daughter  in a friendly way. The same can't be said about the way he treats Jacque's mother, the Countess (Bette Davis), a woman addicted to morphine that can't get out of her bed anymore. John is amused to have this new life, one that even includes a lover – and John falls in love with Jacque’s lover!

There is voiceover narration during the whole movie, just like a film noir. The confrontation between John and Jacque also has noir tones, as it happens in a room full of shadows and contrasts between light and darkness, showing the dual nature of the doppelgängers.

Alec Guinness was chosen by Daphne du Maurier herself to play the leads. Guinness was experienced in playing multiple roles in the same film, as he played eight roles in “Kind Hearts and Coronets” (1949), released a decade before “The Scapegoat”. He has much more to do in “The Scapegoat”, though, as his eight-turn in the earlier film was more of a very deluxe cameo.

Bette Davis was only six years older than Alec Guinness, yet she was playing his mother. Davis is basically wasted in a performance that is just a little longer than a cameo. She was very unhappy with the size of her role, and she often clashed with director Robert Hamer. This shows how sexism has always worked in the film world, as Guinness was on the top of his career, while Davis was considered a has-been.

The novel was adapted by no other than Gore Vidal. Originally published with 368 pages, the novel was deeply changed to fit in a 90-minute film – and Daphne du Maurier was mad at the result, thinking that the screenplay had destroyed the essence of her story. The endings, for instance, are completely different in the book and in the film. “The Scapegoat” was produced by Michael Balcon, who also produced Hitchcock’s silent films and early talkies. Balcon is also actor Daniel Day-Lewis’s grandfather.

There is a huge problem with “The Scapegoat”: its running time. The film wasn’t well-paced, having a rushed ending and an unsatisfactory closing for many characters. Indeed, one main conflict – a murder – only happens about 15 minutes before the end and we have too little to investigate and solve it.

Started as a pet project to both Daphne du Maurier and Alec Guinness, “The Scapegoat” ended as a commercial failure. Du Maurier blamed Guinness for the failure. I blame the screenplay – one that made what could have been an interesting and intriguing mystery into a rushed confrontation.

This is my contribution to the Calls of Cornwall – The Daphne du Maurier blogathon, hosted by Gabriela at Pale Writer.

Escravos do Desejo (1934) / Of Human Bondage (1934)

ESTA CRÍTICA TEM SPOILERS

THIS REVIEW HAS SPOILERS

Almost all artists, no matter the art they make, have one work labeled as a “big break”. That book that became a best-seller and gave its author many prizes. That painting that was sold to a big gallery and gave its painter notoriety. Or that movie that made everybody look at an actor or actress and say: “what a talent!”. For Bette Davis, the big break came with 1934’s “Of Human Bondage”, the 23rd film of her career in Hollywood - proving that it takes many years to become an overnight sensation.

In Paris, Philip Carey (Leslie Howard) asks his painting teacher if someday he would be a great painter. The teacher is sincere: his pupil may know the technique, but lacks the creativeness of a genius. Bummed, Philip decides to go back to London to follow his father’s footsteps and become a doctor. An important detail: Philip has a limp due to a birth defect and is very self-conscious about it.

Once in London, he is asked to help a friend conquer a girl - because he lived in Paris, his friend thinks Philip has more experience with girls. The girl in the picture is waitress Mildred Rogers (Bette Davis). She and Philip end up being rude with each other in their first meeting - with Philip even using, ugh, the pick-up line “you should smile more”. Mildred is disgusted by his limp.

Philip invites her to go out for dinner, and she accepts. He dreams about her, he invites her out again and again. Philip is obsessed. But Mildred is free - she is the kind of free female character that the Production Code would soon kill. She flirts with other customers, goes out with them and seems unbothered by any invitation because she receives so many so often.

Philip tries to forget Mildred by dating writer Norah (Kay Johnson). Now the situation is the inverse: while Philip was devoted to Mildred and she didn’t love him, now we have Norah being devoted to Philip but not being loved by him. Eventually, Mildred comes back - and I’d love to see Norah’s version of the whole story, because there are so many stories of women who ruined men’s lives, but so few of the women who got over loving someone and not being loved back.

Reginald Owen plays Thorpe Athelny, a man who is first Philip’s patient, then becomes kind of a friend and matchmaker. He is built to be amusing and create a cozy atmosphere, but ends up being only annoying and inconvenient. Athelny’s daughter, Sally, is played by Frances Dee. Sally is a sweet girl whose chance with Philip is ruined by, you guessed it, Mildred’s return.

“Of Human Bondage” is based on a romance by W. Somerset Maugham. The author also wrote “The Razor’s Edge”, which was the basis for a brilliant film made in 1946. While “The Razor’s Edge” is a more spiritual work, “Of Human Bondage” is all about the rawest feelings, like love, lust, despair, disgust and anger.

Bette Davis is nothing but sublime in this movie. She is vile, but true to the human character, and her transformation is one to admire - not in the good sense. So, it was a shock when she wasn’t nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. Back in the early 1930s, the Academy allowed write-in votes, and it also revealed the positions the nominees eventually came in - first, second, third places and so on. Not only Bette was a write-in in the category, but she also came in third place, in front of real nominee Grace Moore. The Oscar went to Claudette Colbert that year and, when a write-in candidate actually on the award - the Cinematography award in 1935 - the Academy forbade the practice.

Bette Davis was looking for juicier roles than the one she was being offered at Warner Brothers. She found what she was looking for in RKO’s “Of Human Bondage”, and eventually Warner executives campaigned against her at the Oscar race. This film was a turning point in Davis’s career, and the proof that the actress was never afraid: she was not afraid of playing unsympathetic roles like Mildred, not afraid of becoming “ugly” for a role if it demanded realism, and never afraid to be over the top – or larger than life.
