Kenneth Williams: Fantabulosa! (2006)

I’ve been writing about old movies for sixteen years now. Cinema itself is a little over 130 years old. And everyday I learn something new about the movie world. For instance: through my friend Virginie who writes mainly at The Wonderful World of Cinema I got to know a film series I had never heard about before: the Carry On movie franchise. Thirty-one movies of the franchise were made in England between 1958 and 1992, plus several spin-offs on television and on stage. A recurring name in the cast was Kenneth Williams. I believe there is no better way to get to know someone than learning about their life, and luckily there is a biopic made for TV about Kenneth Williams, the movie I watched and now review, as part of his centennial celebration.

We start with Kenny (Michael Sheen), a flamboyant bachelor living in an apartment with minimal furniture. A flashback begins and we’re introduced to little Kenny, a boy having his hair cut by his father. His mother tells him about the father: “he’s a man, not like us” and shows Kenny a dress she made for him. Wearing the dress, Kenny appears on stage and receives praise from a local newspaper.

Now an adult, Kenneth joins a theater group and proves himself to be a great comedian, even when he’s trying to be a serious actor. He then finds a job on the radio. It’s interesting to notice how Kenneth’s trajectory so far is similar to many Hollywood actors of the 1930s onwards, especially those in comedy.

The radio show becomes popular and the next step was clear: television! Let’s remember that TV appeared and popularized sooner in England then it did in the US. His television fame doesn’t last long, as he is criticized by both his coworker Tony (Martin Trenaman) and the BBC producers who wanted to make a more realistic show, without Kenny’s voices and characters.

Sadness doesn’t last long as he’s recruited to the movies! His appearance in the Carry On films begins in 1958 with “Carry On Sergeant” and went on in 25 more movies. We can see them referenced in the biopic by the various costumes Kenneth is wearing on set alongside his friend Joan Sims (Beatie Edney). Besides his work in cinema, we see him starring on stage and TV, and also making and losing friends and forging new relationships.

Like many other actors - like many other PEOPLE - Kenneth had a complicated relationship with his parents. He was very close with his supportive mother, Lou (Cheryl Campbell), but distant from his father, Charlie (Peter Wight). The father talked about him getting a good job since he was little and disapproved of him being an actor, even though he would listen to Kenneth’s radio shows when alone at home. One night, Kenneth is vacuuming his apartment only in swimming suits and refuses to let his father in, something that harmed their already poor relationship for good.

The City and the Pillar”.

Kenneth first learns about “queerness” in the book “The City and the Pillar”. For him, kissing and having sex are totally disgusting, but he dissipates his energy by masturbating. He would be considered now a homorromantic asexual individual. His mother already understood that.

Based on the book “The Diaries of Kenneth Williams”, posthumously published in 1992, “Fantabulosa” is a good made-for-TV movie, a category that, until recent years, has been associated with poorer production values. Although his acting is a bit affected and even annoying in the beginning, the chameleon Michael Sheen does a good job.

There are quotes from Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw in the movie. But I choose to end this review with a quote from the man himself, Kenneth Williams: “The quote, like opportunity, food and love, has got to come at the right moment. Blurted out, it can send your ego round your ankles.”

This is my contribution to the Carry On Kenny blogathon, hosted by Virginie at The Wonderful World of Cinema.

Silvino Santos: o cineasta da selva

Silvino Santos: a filmmaker from the jungle

Two years ago, I didn’t know who Silvino Santos was. Sure, I knew that his documentary “No Paiz das Amazonas” from 1922 was ranked #71 at the 100 best documentaries made in Brazil listed by the Brazilian Association of Film Critics, which I’m a member of - even though I entered the association after this poll was released. My story with Silvino Santos begins at Le Giornate del Cinema Muto, the Pordenone Silent Film Festival in 2023.

The 42nd edition of the Giornate exhibited, in its in-person event in Italy, a recently restored copy of a film considered lost: Silvino Santos’ “Amazonas, o Maior Rio do Mundo” (“Amazonas, the Biggest River in the World”) from 1918, the first documentary feature ever. It was the world premiere of the restoration and it was even covered in the TV news here. Afterwards, the restored copy toured several cities in Brazil, until it was uploaded to the Cinematheque website.

I watched “Amazonas…” in the comfort of my bedroom, but the emotion of seeing it for the first time in a century with a live musical would make the moment more memorable. But it was memorable enough: I was amazed by what I saw. It was the past coming back to life. From then on, I kept Silvino Santos in my radar: I watched and reviewed “No Paiz das Amazonas” last February and in March was surprised by the fact that a biopic / documentary about him from 1997 would be shown on TV. And then I was much more surprised by the parallels between Silvino’s trajectory and my great-grandfather’s life.

Silvino Santos was born in Cernache do Bonjardim, Portugal, in 1886 and came to Brazil aged 14, bewitched by the description of the Amazon he read in a book. My great-grandfather, José D’Oliveira Magalhães, was born in Caldas de Aregos, Portugal, in 1895 and came to Brazil aged 19, escaping the war. Santos started working as a photographer at 17 and he wasn’t 30 yet when he became famous and was commissioned to make a movie for latex mogul Juan Araña. My great-grandfather right after arriving started working as a traveling salesman and wasn’t 30 yet when he met the love of his life - in fact, his first date with my great-grandmother was watching a Mary Pickford movie!

My great-grandparents

Silvino’s first movie literally sank as the ship that was taking it from South America to England was the victim of a German attack during World War I. But by then he was totally in love with filmmaking. He soon became a partner, director and producer in the company Amazonia Cine Film. He began working on his feature debut, the aforementioned “Amazonas…”. A distributor sold the copies of the film in Europe as his own, and it remained mislabeled until the movie was rediscovered a couple of years ago.

Also a commissioned project, “No Paiz das Amazonas” was a huge success, being watched by 15,000 people in only one weekend and staying in theaters for five consecutive months. Once in Rio for his film’s premiere, Silvino shot another movie there, “Terra Encantada”. Back to Manaus, another commissioned project makes Silvino responsible for the first aerial shot of the Amazonas. More trips resulted in more movies, such as “Terra Portuguesa”, exhibited with semi-synchronized sound in 1927 - in reality, a soundtrack was recorded with songs and voices.

“A filmmaker from the jungle” is, as I said, a mix of biopic and documentary. As Silvino Santos, actor José de Abreu shares the narration with a female voice - by Rosi Campos -, with Abreu’s narration being in the first person. Actress Denise Fraga has a bit part as Silvino’s wife Anita. Their children Guilherme and Lília are interviewed. Fragments of his films are shown.

Murnau.

One very interesting thing portrayed is Silvino’s mysticism. He had a near-death experience when he was five, considered to be blessed or protected in some way because he never got attacked by ferocious Indians nor got sick during his expeditions, and at an old age talked about communicating with spirits, such as the ghost of fellow filmmaker F.W. Murnau.

Silvino Santos made more than 50 shorts, the “Silvinadas”, and nine features from 1914 to 1957. He died in 1970. My great-grandfather had six children between 1920 and 1931. He died in 1976. Silvino Santos wrote his name in Film History. My great-grandfather marked the lives of people who met him and is still fondly remembered by them. Two Portuguese emigrés who won in Brazil, albeit in very different manners.

Três Palavrinhas (1950) / Three Little Words (1950)

Você deve conhecer Cole Porter, Ira e George Gershiwn, George M. Cohan, Irving Berlin e Jerome Kern. I Wanna Be Loved by You”.

You might be familiar with Cole Porter, Ira and George Gershwin, George M. Cohan, Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern. You might not know Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby, but you certainly have heard their songs, such as “I Wanna Be Loved By You”. Kalmar and Ruby were not the most famous artists to emerge from the Tin Pan Alley, a region of Manhattan that concentrated the main music publishers of the early 20th century, but the duo proved to be worthy of a biopic, that came as 1950's “Three Little Words”.

They meet for the first time in an unfortunate incident. Bert Kalmar (Fred Astaire) is a successful vaudeville dancer, making a dancing duo with Jessie Brown (Vera-Ellen). Jessie wants to marry Bert, but he is more interested in becoming a magician. When he tries to do a few magic tricks on the stage, pianist Harry Ruby (Red Skelton) is sent to work as Bert's assistant, and the number ends up in a hilarious mess involving rabbits in a top hat and a vicious goose.

Their paths cross a second time. This time, Bert has injured his knee and can't dance for a year. Harry is trying his luck as a composer and songwriter. They meet at an agent's office and Bert helps Harry to write better lyrics for his tune. However, when Bert recognizes Harry from the magic show incident, he gets mad and leaves. Nevertheless, Harry publishes the song they made together, forcing Bert to start a partnership as the song becomes a hit.

This partnership, of course, isn't one without a few problems. As Bert complains about Harry's love of baseball, Harry doesn't like Bert's interest in magic. With the best intentions, they interfere in each other's personal businesses. There are arguments, reunions and awkward silences. All of this was fiction, to make the film more interesting, as the real Kalmar and Ruby got along very well.

In his early years in vaudeville, Fred Astaire knew Kalmar and Ruby. About Bert Kalmar and Jessie Brown, Astaire said: "We [Fred and his sister Adele Astaire] used to stand in the wings and watch Jessie and Bert with thrilled envy, wondering if we could equal their finesse and reach their headline billing". These memories may have influenced him to declare that “Three Little Words” was among his favorite experiences in Hollywood. Astaire won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for this film, in the year the category was created.

Three Little Words” is the first of two films Vera-Ellen made with Fred Astaire. With or without Astaire as her dancing partner, Vera-Ellen shines in this film. She proves to be as capable as Astaire when they share the screen, and alone she displays charm and vitality. Often underrated, Vera-Ellen deserves to be mentioned, alongside Cyd Charisse, as one of the best dancers of Hollywood's Golden Age of musicals.

Debbie Reynolds appears in a bit part as Helen Kane, and another interesting bit player is Gloria DeHaven. Gloria plays her own mother, Mrs. Carter DeHaven - her real name was Flora Parker DeHaven -, a Broadway star who introduced the Kalmar-Ruby song “Who's Sorry Now”. Eileen Percy, played by Arlene Dahl, was a silent film actress. Helen Kane was also a real film actress who inspired the cartoon character Betty Boop, and she even dubbed Debbie Reynolds's vocals in this movie – that means the scene is of Reynolds playing the actress that was dubbing her backstage!

I have only one problem with the film, and it's the nonetheless gorgeous costumes by Helen Rose. Although the story is set in the late 1910s, Vera-Ellen's clothes are clearly from the early 1950s, and I found that a bit distracting. A woman dancing wearing only a black leotard would have caused frisson in 1919!

Three Little Words” reminded me of another Fred Astaire movie, “Blue Skies”, from 1946. Both films are about show business partners who are very different from each other. In “Blue Skies”, however, Astaire is a dancer while Bing Crosby plays a nightclub manager. In “Three Little Words”, Red Skelton is a nice contrast to Astaire, serving also as comic relief – because he may love baseball, but he’s really bad at it. I believe “Blue Skies” has more memorable dance routines and songs.

"Romance Inacabado" / "Blue Skies"

MGM made so many great musicals in the 1940s and  1950s that many of them go overlooked, while we talk too often about gems like “An American in Paris” (1951) and “Singin' in the Rain” (1952). “Three Little Words” may not be as interesting because its subjects are not so well-known, but it deserves to be seen especially because of Vera-Ellen's dancing skills. In three little words: you'll like it!
